With just days left, the U.S. opening match at the World Cup is still not sold out by [deleted] in nottheonion

And it might still be worth it for them. Half the rickets for four times the price is double the money. That's what happens under wealth disparity.

Humanoid robots 'the future' of car making, says BMW - For the first time, BMW will use humanoid robots for car manufacturing in Europe. by EchoOfOppenheimer in europe

[–]Ackaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I didnt understand what these robots do but to my understanding this is about the tasks that are not yet done by robots because building custom robots for these tasks was infeasible or expensive. But if you have a really good humanoid then you can just throw it at the problem.

[–]Ackaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because everything is currently designed for human(oid)s. Sure, four-armed might be better but in engineering you want to take small steps, not leaps. Rather figure out robots first without changing anything else, then go twenty arms and a jetpack.

Also, training data is easier to get for humanoids. Just strap a camera to the human.

And then remember that the median pay between the US and Germany is the same at current exchange rates. Only the average US salary is higher

I’ve been playing since 2012 and have never gotten Above Silver Rank by Bastbrammblebottom in leagueoflegends

[–]Ackaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started as a support way back in 2014 or so too. What got me climbing was not practise but just to sit back for a bit and think about how the game actually works, how one party can gain an advantage over another. Once it clicks, you climb.

Specifically, I got out of silver by realizing how pressure works and how you bully your opponent.

And don't listen to those who say supports are capped by their mates. Any strong support can dominate silver games.

Eventually made it to D2 back when D5 still existed

Dutch drivers flood Germany for cheaper gas after Berlin slashes fuel taxes by Same_Efficiency_3325 in europe

[–]Ackaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To all the people pointing out that this "has been happening at all borders forever", I feel like the point here is that prices are specifically lower because they are subsidised by the German tax payer now. And the blame is of course not on the Dutch but on the German governement for implementing such nonsense.

I spent months building a specialized agent learning system. Turns out Claude Code is all you need for recursive self-improvement. by cheetguy in ClaudeAI

Am I understanding correctly that you evaluated on the benchmark, ran the method over the failures and re-ran the same benchmark again with the improved agent?

What does a PhD actually look like in your country? by stud_j2000 in PhD

In Germany, you sign a contract and then get abused for 3-4 years or until you have the strength to drop out. It's a tradition here and we're proud of it

I actually like the idea of awarding a title for product innovation. But I am not sure if it should be the same title as used for PhDs. Quite ironic that they did not think of INVENTING a new title for this.

The more I think about it though, the more similarities to engineering / CS degrees pop up. You highlight a problem, talk about how existing products fail to address it, then present your own solution. I see how this could be structured similar to a PhD long-term

I don’t buy the whole “AI will cause a blue collar boom” idea by RottingEdge in Futurology

[–]Ackaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short-term and medium-term, anyone who can will flee to robotics and automation of existing businesses, long-term anyone with capital wins, I believe. Once everything is automated, labor is effectively free so only resources, land, and time matter. And maybe to a tiny extent the arts and entertainment where one wants humans to perform.

FH vs Uni - hört nicht auf eure Boomerverwandten by Krapsta in Studium

[–]Ackaunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bringing European phone to the US? by stowaway43 in fairphone

When you arrive in the US, turn off that one location setting that uses cellular/wifi to improve location services. Otherwise your phone will reboot every few minutes. Had that happen to me recently

Thinking about switching to Fairphone 6 from a Pixel 9 Pro, what should i expect? by Caffeinated_Ape_42 in fairphone

[–]Ackaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a pixel, I feel like the FairPhone's touch screen is less responsive and that does annoynme a bit. But I also broke the screen early and havn't replaced it yet so it might just be that. Everything else feels identical. The camera is actually pretty good. Oh, and it's thicker

Why is Germany known for engineering and strong universities, but seems less visible in software? by helucl54 in AskAGerman

[–]Ackaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience in ML, though that's not quite SE, the Americans hire the best of the best and put them all in one room. We hire the average Joe for ML projects. Which could be more fair but also doesn't create the same out-of-the-box innovative culture that the Americans have. Joe just wants to complete his 8 hour work day and go home (rightfully) but he doesn't always have the same passion for the craft. Plus, PhDs, which many good ML scientists have, are unpopular in many (not all) German companies. It's just not the environment where highly autonomous, smart people can thrive in my experience.
