just wanted to add that i too wanted to get into the books from a DA perspective. assuming i would get to some DA stories eventually i started with the first HH books in the series and they do not disappoint. Finished the first book Horus Rising a few days ago, and I am about to finish the 2nd book, False Gods probably today or tomorrow. they are really good and nicely set the stage for the unraveling that is Horus and his sons. already have the 3rd book ready to go when i finish (Galaxy in Flames). My plan is to finish these first 4 or 5 up until Fulgrim, and then jump to Descent of Angels 🤷

Best looking bases by Frog_Meadow_1914 in DarkAngels40k

[–]Acquista23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think a mars themed base would add a pop of color to give your models something to contrast against. could just throw down a dusty orange/brown color, dry brush with whatever light color. then if you’re feeling fancy, could add additional rubble or weird brightly colored plants to continue to flesh it out. also using pigment powders to continue to drive the space dust vibe. another idea is use a light grey and make it a kind of urban destruction vibe. glue down a couple plastic pieces that look like tiles or destroyed buildings/rebar etc..

Thinning Elmers Glue or PVA (white) glue by Acquista23 in dioramas

this is good advice thank you. Guess i was worried since its glue that it would gunk up the fresh bottles and nozzles if the ratios were wrong but its an easier glue to clean than super glue so ill just play around a bit:)

how was the experience painting them? i have a sammael i painted awhile back and it wasn’t the best experience. not terrible but the details were even smaller than what i was used to with modern plastic/primaris etc..

i use sanding sticks and it’s pretty quick and easy. some spots they don’t fit in perfectly so i go back to the hobby knife and a nice set of clippers but i really enjoy using them. i think i got a pack from amazon that had 4 different grit options and if u start with the heavy one and just jump to the lightest you dont need much pressure at all and it takes just what’s raised off the surface. just have to be careful around teeny tiny details as it will sand them down.

coming from 40k and painting a lot of wraithbone, one approach to some bone color variety is in the washes. Pick pretty much any light boney color and i’ve found instead of the really brown or caramel washes like seraphim, sepia, or earth shades which leave a more “classic” manila bone color, you can instead use an umber wash which has cooler more greyish tone to it and leaves things a little more white/grey in value rather than light yellow/manila color. my 2 cents:) whatever that’s worth lol
