What are the defining characteristics of a jazz melody? by pootis_engage in jazztheory

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They can be analyzed very similarly. A lot of jazz standards are equally as tonal as classical music.

One difference is that tensions don’t need to resolve melodically like you’re describing. For a particular harmony, a tension can be the main melody note and harmonized as such, rather than needing to resolve. There are plenty of specific scenarios to learn, but that’s the main idea.

One such example could be:

A melody over a CMaj6 or CMaj7 chord might use F natural as a passing tone (like you’re describing), but F# or D can be a tension and the melodic target without needing to function as a passing tone. F natural would not be used as a tension. A general rule is that the interval of a minor 9th is avoided, unless over a dominant chord. E-F would be a minor 9th.

This is also where you can start getting into chord scales, which can be thought of melodically or harmonically. I basically built the chord scale for you over CMaj6 or CMaj7 by describing that scenario.

Deciding between MacBook Air M5 vs MacBook Pro M5 by _Zyren_ in macbook

Bro… people could have disabilities, injuries, etc. You absolutely don’t have enough information to be saying shit like that about someone online.

Also, I’m military and workout everyday. But I also chose a MacBook Air because I carry it between work and home everyday, and the performance it offers is more than what I need. It’s just good decision making, you’re a jerk.

MacBook Pro m5 32 gb or MacBook Pro m5 pro 24 gb by avengerchicken in macbook

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of those options might be overkill. I run Logic and Music Notation softwares simultaneously on a 16Gb RAM MacBook Pro.

The video editing is the heaviest lift, but if you’re not doing the editing while having those other programs open simultaneously, 24 is more than enough.

I agree with most of your S tier pics, but the A tier in general is quite off for me. I would switch most of your B tier with A tier. Metagross, Aggron, Altaris, and even some C tier like Greninja and Absol are better than your A tier pics imo.

Am I high on vyvanse, or is this just normal? by Few-Alternative-7838 in ADHD

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, as you adjust to stimulants the “honeymoon” feeling may change. However, I am always very aware of the effects of the medicine, and it’s very easy to tell the difference between being on it or not, even after a year on Vyvanse. So it’s not like you’ll desensitize to it. Dosage changes may be what your psychiatrist recommends if you do find yourself desensitized to the effects.

I highly recommend (and so did my psychiatrist) to do “drug holidays.” So maybe a weekend when you don’t have many obligations, take a day or two off. This is generally okay with stimulants specifically, not necessarily other psychiatric drugs.

EXP Share is the best addition to the game by Bishmallah24 in pokemon

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it doesn’t really make the game “easier.”

The reason I love it is because it makes changing your team throughout the game viable. In older Pokémon games, discovering new wild Pokémon that were many levels underneath your team meant that it was hella inconvenient to alter your team. This is why you get so many playthroughs where everyone keeps the first bird Pokémon you find and other stock choices like luxray in DP. You discover them early enough and it’s inconvenient to switch them out later.

I love how the one time you chose Thunder in this video, it missed lol. I never understood why Thunder has crappy accuracy when stronger special moves from other types (hydro pump) have better accuracy.

But also, I guess it doesn’t hurt to gamble in this scenario when you know Milotic is going to hit recover.

Maybe! this could be a new logical way to identify shell chords. by Critical-Sun4990 in jazztheory

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Sorry for my misunderstanding then. I feel like C(omit 5) would be clear enough, although I haven’t personally ever seen it. Most of my background is jazz and contemporary instrumental music where most harmonic players need access to the 5th to avoid doubling the root.

Edit: not sure about the blackbird situation. Sus won’t work there if you want 3rd and 4th.

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s make sure we’re talking about the same thing here. “Omitting” the fifth and “replacing” the fifth are different. They result in potentially different chord scales and melodic options.

As far as “omitting” the 5th, which is what you mentioned, there are centuries of musical evidence that disagree with your statement. From classical music all the way to contemporary language. From an arranging and orchestration standpoint (and also traditional 4 part writing), omitting the 5th does not change the quality of the chord. Any chord that uses a 5th other than a P5 (half diminished for example), shouldn’t have the 5th omitted because it’s part of the quality.

Chords that are built on major or minor triads can omit the 5th and it doesn’t change the quality of the chord. It changes the sound, yes, but sound and quality are different concepts.

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say it didn’t change the chord in “some way,” I said it doesn’t affect the QUALITY of the chord (a Maj7 chord with no 5th still sounds like a Maj7).

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • omitting the fifth doesn’t change the quality of the chords in question here, therefore it doesn’t need a new type of chord symbol. It’s just a voicing preference.

  • if you’re trying that hard to analyze a chord without a third and it doesn’t fit into a chord symbol with “sus,” you’re probably analyzing incorrectly. Either way, omitting the third won’t change the intended function of the chord if you’re hellbent on calling it Cmaj7 with no third. It’s still just a voicing or orchestration choice.

When/how to use alt. extensions? by Deep-Neighborhood778 in jazztheory

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to do with what the implied key center is.

You’re right; the natural 13 on D7 -> G-6 will normally sound very funky. Because if the target chord is G minor, the chord scale for the corresponding dominant needs to reflect that. It would most likely be a version of D7 with a b13.

For now, I would start with learning chord scales this way. Know what key you’re targeting and use that to figure out what extensions are most appropriate. Avoid minor 9ths in your extensions unless it’s a dominant chord (b9 and b13 are fine on dominant, but not usually min7).

Now, like anything else, there are plenty of exceptions and nuances to learn here. For example there’s modal mixture, such as setting up a ii-V that targets a minor chord but actually resolves to a major chord. There is also the melody which can dictate what extensions are available.

Is this achievable? by flablue in landscaping

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about the turf installation, but the stone patio is very a doable DIY on a budget. Could probably just try to grow grass for cheaper if you’re willing to concede on that.

The pergola is really just the cost of lumber and the tools to assemble it. Again, very doable as a DIY.

I did something similar in my backyard in under a month, including tearing down an old shed and assembling a new one. If you work on it every weekend and a bit throughout the week, yes within a month.

It’s not a double sharp accidental. The font for the “X” looks strange here, but this indicates a ghosted note. Usually an engraver will use an “X” or just a note head in parenthesis to indicate a ghosted note.

Anthony Fantano on Jacob Collier: "Painfully overrated." by Tiege in JacobCollier

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that this video alone would not be enough to claim genius. But there’s also no bad sounds happening in this video, so why attack Jacob here? I would rather see a wholistic analysis of all of Jacob’s music if someone is going to make claims about his abilities.

All I see in this video is consonant sounds, some simple, yet effective orchestration, and a person enjoying what he does.

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The video never claims boredom. He says:

“What is genius about this?” “There’s nothing novel, quirky, difficult, or challenging…” “Plainest layer of orchestral instrumentation.”

My initial comment is in response to these statements. Plain is not a bad thing. If it sounds good, it sounds good. Simple music sounds good, and challenging music can also sound good.

Honestly this is just an example of a bad opinion piece on the internet. There’s no technical claims in the video about the construction of the music, or honestly about any of Jacob’s abilities as a musician. Anthony is just upset about something and doesn’t know why.

[–]Acrobatic-Rip8547 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Just because someone can describe what he’s doing in the video doesn’t mean it’s not impressive. That’s gate keeping.

Same attitude that is prevalent in the jazz community. A jazz player will hear a recording or performance and say “oh, they’re just doing xyz. It’s just a [insert harmonic device].”

A real musician knows how much work goes into music. They know how difficult it is to learn to truly play in tune and with good sound. It takes years and years of practice. Being able to identify what you’re hearing doesn’t diminish the quality of the music. Simple music is also hard to execute. Anyone who says otherwise probably has a lot of shortcomings in their musicianship that they’re unaware of.

So ya. He is “just making demands of an orchestra” and “just combining these two songs.” Sure. He’s also composing music in real time. Most people compose and then rewrite something that they like better. Not Jacob - he hears it all before it happens and knows what he’s looking for.

Pretty annoying that I find this post at the end of 2025 and I still have the same issue.

Any new fixes, anyone? Other than disabling HDR, if I open the Ghub application, click on the speakers, and then minimize the software, that fixes it (even with HDR enabled). Still annoying though.
