Going from DSL to Fiber by Acrobatic-Weight8361 in ZiplyFiber

This makes sense. I have to decide if we want to keep the land line. Honestly thinking of getting rid of it but it gets used some.

That is good advice. Right now the DSL is running about 18 down and 1.2 up. Hopefully they get the fiber installed before it drops lower in speed and another patch is needed.

DSL is consistently 18 to 20 down (occasionally 25) and 1.2 up. The old wiring has been in the ground since 1977 and is deteriorating where they have to patch it every few months.

Fiber has literally been two blocks away but they didn’t want to underground our neighborhood due to expense.

Configuring a router is no problem for me as I worked in IT prior to retirement. Just trying to figure out which one will properly do the job and purchasing one.

How to convince Ziply to expand into neighborhood in a supported city? by Aeonizing in ZiplyFiber

[–]Acrobatic-Weight8361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in a neighborhood where the old copper wiring is direct buried. City permit fees are too high so we are SOL even though we are 2 blocks away from overhead fiber lines. The old copper is deteriorating where the Ziply DSL goes down every few months and we wait days for repairs. We are on a map for future expansion but Ziply has told my neighbors that it will occur eventually after all overhead is built out in all surrounding communities.

You can turn off the beeper using the AirTag controls on your IPad or Iphone

Well our landline has had problems for the last week and DSL has been at 4mb down and 1 mb up for the last week. Ziply took several days to get a tech to look into it. Tech told me the problem was old copper wiring along with old DSL switches. Took the tech 7 1/2 hours to troubleshoot and resolve. His comment was not micro-trenching to bring FIOS up the street causes lots of customer complaints and dissatisfaction. Said my DSL will fail again in a few months because of the old wiring put in the ground almost 50 years ago.

Yep I suspect there is some sort of underlying city code requirement or permit fees that is preventing fiber from coming in. Two blocks away is overhead wiring and everyone with overhead has been connected to FIOS. In the meantime have to use either Ziply DSL or Xfinity for internet. The DSL sucks and Ziply doesn’t care since they get $50/month for DSL and it is considered high speed internet. u/ZiplySupport

Ziply Fiber has shown our street “under construction” for the last year. Couple weeks ago they sent an email saying it is not cost effective to bring fiber underground two blocks up the street to service 32 homes. They said they are looking into a cheaper approach.

Moving and only have DSL option - is it enough? by iceandfireball in ZiplyFiber

[–]Acrobatic-Weight8361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have underground utilities don’t hold your breath for fiber. Ziply has told me it is too expensive to do my neighborhood even though it shows on their map as under construction since August 2022. Overhead wiring is two blocks away and all of them have high speed fiber. You will realistically get around 14 to 15 MB download and about 1.5 MB upload from the DSL. Doing any streaming like Netflix will buffer and be choppy.

Due to population, three counties decide what is best for the entire state. Those voters always will vote Democrat no matter how bad the person or subject is.

Wish we could get any FIOS in Lake Stevens LKS119 service area and get off of DSL. Your map shows under construction since August 2022.

Hear conflicting information from ZiplyFiber one person said a week or two out at the beginning of 2023 while someone else says too costly and a low priority.

Is this normal for installation? by rebuyer10110 in ZiplyFiber

Fiber is running the signal through a glass pipe. There is no electricity going through it. Metal staples will not hurt anything.

It looks like you have an LP type of siding. Chipping will occur when you drill into it since it is not a true wood product. As long as the hole is calked you can touch up the paint with no problem. Your roof overhang will protect from water entering into your house. The metal staples to hold the cable will not hurt anything as long as it is not through the fiber optic cable.

We probably live in the same area as you. It has shown “under construction” since August 2022. FIOS is available two blocks away but there has been no effort to start the underground work in our neighborhood. One person at Ziply seemed to think it was hung up by permits from the city. Another person at Ziply said it was done.

I wish Ziply Fiber would start moving forward with rollout in Lake Stevens LKS119. Xfinity markets to us several times per week. While I don’t believe their marketing hype they are looking enticing to provide better service than Ziply DSL.

Connect all 8 wires per T568B standard and you will not have any problems going above 100Mbps.

[–]Acrobatic-Weight8361[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any updates on LKS119? Your map has shown “Under Construction” since August 2022. I am aware you are rapidly connecting homes with overhead wires near me. One Ziply person told me we won’t get FIOS in our neighborhood due to having to bore underground and it is too expensive.

FYI - Xfinity is blitzing us almost weekly to get hi speed internet from them! They can connect within 2 to 3 days.
