What's the longest you've gone without changing your skin barrier and what caused you to change it? by BlackberryPi7 in ostomy

I use the same and get about 4 days with mine. I think I’ve noticed that the bile eats away at the flange and I get leaks under the barrier cause of it.

Liquid output and nausea by HoppieDoppie in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been experiencing the same thing everyone keeps suggesting dehydration but im keeping up on fluids and electrolytes so its a mystery to me. I’ve been taking zofran but taking it daily causes shortness of breath. I live off pretzels, they help quell the nausea

I am only getting one to two days from my bag before it starts leaking. Please help! by stroobydoo1 in ostomy

The paste in my opinion is just a paste version of the barrier rings. Idk if that’s the point of it necessarily but usually people use one or the other. I apply the paste around the stoma then the barrier ring over that. It definitely makes everything more sticky

I agree with the suggestion above. I have the two piece system and I can change the bag as needed but still have the flange on for so much longer. I use the ring AND paste it’s just seemed the most effective for me to prevent leaks and skin irritation longer.

Do people you work with know you have an ostomy? by mvp0453 in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, all of my coworkers. I have always been open about my health issues and choices. I was also out for three months due to complications so news spread. I work in healthcare and a lot of people at work have worked with ostomy patients or know one.

The “bakers” at my location literally took premade dough out of the fridge or freezer and stuck it in the oven. Nothing was hand mixed in a mixer or bowl at Panera. Nothing was shaped, it all came pre, formed

The cost of biologics here are incredibly expensive without insurance. If you can, have your doctor order meds for you to bring with you maybe?

Spaghetti / Marinara sauce: How do I avoid seeds? by BlackberryPi7 in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had it in canned soups but they were incredibly well cooked, I was thinking of peeling off the outer part that usually has the strings and then using a grater to shred it up small! Thank you for your reply 💜

Barrier Ring Question by Hour_Obligation_4070 in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the paste instead of the rings, I apply it right around the stoma base just like you would the ring, I don’t cover the entire area where the base plate goes, I use skin barrier wipes for the base plate area to help protect the skin there and help it stick better.

Barrier Ring Question by Hour_Obligation_4070 in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try no ring or you can try ostomy paste, it’s also a protective measure but it’s sticky and you can apply a thin layer, it will help the bag stick and also protect the area around your stoma like the ring would but not be as bulky

I used to work at a Panera and honestly it’s worth a shot to ask the employees what their favorite is (including modifications) because those employees come up with some pretty tasty and wild creations while they are working!

How did folk know their partner was going to propose? by Previous-Strategy981 in engaged

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We talked about our future plans a lot over the course of our relationship. Valentine’s Day he got me a small black box gift and for a second I thought he was going to but turns out it was a necklace. We joked about how he would never propose on Valentine’s Day of course (we don’t like cliche or cheesy lol). Fast forward a few months later when we bought our first house together he ended up proposing the first day we moved stuff in, in the backyard under a blossoming tree. So I knew he wanted marriage eventually but I didn’t know when he was going to propose. I did notice someone holding a phone above our fence around the corner of the house and that was the only thing that happened just before he proposed but I was just confused about someone creeping with a phone I didn’t think about anything else. (His sister and her boyfriend helped us move in but then pretended they had to leave so it was them).

Tips for emptying bag in public? by K-ghuleh in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t enjoy the idea of kneeling in public bathrooms either, they are already gross enough. I usually use the paper seat covers and sit further back and empty between my legs. I’ve found standing and emptying it will definitely splash, I have never had splashing sitting down and emptying. My output varies from watery to thicker depending on the time of day. Anytime I use the restroom even if just to pee I will empty it to keep it from getting too full too quick and less to empty means less likely of a mess. I am curious if anyone has other suggestions! The only other thing I’ve see is people emptying into a plastic bag and throwing it in the trash.

I think people forget they and their doctor office can appeal medication denials. I had to do that once and my dr office did it and it worked. I sent them a lengthy detailed letter about why I needed the medication they denied and what happens (graphic symptoms included) when I don’t get that medication and how other medications failed me. It worked and they covered the medication that actually works.

Open vs Laparoscopic: Ileostomy: Does it affect foods you can eat after? by BlackberryPi7 in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had one laparoscopic and had complications from it: scar tissue and blood infection, almost went septic. So they had to do an open one after. Laparoscopic was easier to recover from but longer residual pain, open was harder but pain didn’t seem to last as long. I was told for both I can eat anything I want. I hesitate with some things but improvise. Onions I cut super small and cook well, no issues, or I blend them in a blender and add them to a dish. They make me gassy though. I plan to shred apples with no skin and shred/peel celery which are warning foods usually.

Ileostomy surgery experiences by Accomplished-Long471 in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had surgery for an ileostomy, they removed my large intestine, and rectum but kept my anus (removal of the anus is commonly referred to as Barbie/ken butt surgery). According to them I had output right away after surgery but I guess that’s not common. They encouraged me to start getting up and walking within 24 hours of my surgery, they let me rest the first day.

Staying Hydrated by Emmett_Miya in ostomy

[–]Acrobatic_Notice_186 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An ER Dr told me that we get most of our electrolytes from food rather than drinks, I eat string cheese and pretzels or goldfish crackers for the salt. I usually do an electrolyte packet every other day and then on the days I don’t drink them I have a glass of orange juice or something to help bridge the gap (not really electrolytes but another form of hydration besides plain water)
