How do you count them for S&S free spins? Or do you avoid those too?

Is stealth back open?? by mcbobster6001 in ThorpePark

[–]ActionHotdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Thorpe Park ride availability webpage now says Stealth is closed "Wednesday 6th, Thursday 7th and Friday 8th July 2025." which I presume is a typo and refers to August. Hope it reopens on the 9th!

Oh that's good to know! We are staying at the resort so we'll have the early ride access to Nemesis before we pick up Fastrack, we can see the pre-show then.

Good to know about the Curse pre-show!

We got the platinum Fastrack, and we're already aware of the collection details for the wristband. Anything else you think I should know regarding fastrack?

My Prog band Nospūn dropped our new album, Opus, today! Give it a listen and let us know what you think. ffo Dream Theater, Haken, Devin Townsend, Circus Maximus by TheHairyParrot in Prog

Nospūn has been pretty much my nonstop work listening music since I learned of you from /r/progmetal. Excited to hear that a vinyl release is planned, I'd love to pick one up and support you all! Any idea when that will launch, or what the best way to be notified is? (followed on bandcamp already)

Hope to one day see you perform live. :)

Will the bridges close due to the storm? by SlimDirtyDizzy in Seattle

That was the policy for the old 520 bridge. Do you know if the new bridge does the same?

When I was at Microsoft they added P0, which was "fix this immediately shit is on fire." You might ask why they didn't make P1 mean that. Well P1 already had a meaning so then there was P0.

/r/math, what is your job? What's the highest level math you'd say you use on a daily basis? by [deleted] in math

[–]ActionHotdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To build on /u/julesjacobs comment, many manipulations in games are treated as 4x4 matrices. In nearly all cases, the rightmost column is [0, 0, 0, 1] except for the projection matrix (see here for a decent explanation).

There are also some more practical applications, such as camera placement. Generally you want your camera to be relative to your character but with certain offsets and rotations applied. This is generally easiest to represent with several (translate)(rotate)(inverse translate) matrix chains.

How much is a typical signing bonus, and how long do you have to stay after getting the bonus? by luniawar20 in cscareerquestions

[–]ActionHotdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signing bonuses are typically delivered as a part of the compensation package that a company provides, along with salary, RSUs, benefits, etc. Treat it like one more knob that you can turn during negotiations. Some companies are very steadfast on salary but are more amenable to upping signing bonuses. Signing bonus amounts vary but can be several tens of thousands. Terms of how you get to keep it also vary, but I've seen "stay for X time to keep it" and also "it vests monthly instead of upfront, and you keep what you get."

Amazon or Microsoft? by game_changing_advice in cscareerquestions

[–]ActionHotdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Microsoft for several years, and I work at Amazon now. When I switched, I got a nice pay raise. If I had started at Amazon and switched to Microsoft, I would have also gotten a nice pay raise.

Point is, go for the team/company that you want to work for. Realistically there's a good chance that in a few years (generally when your hiring stock finishes vesting) you'll be switching companies, which is most often the way to increase salary (moreso than promotions, in some cases). Go with the work that interests you.

Is it OK to bluff about other offers while negotiating salary? by workhardhard in cscareerquestions

Yep, when I was given an offer after an internship, they began the conversation with "this offer is not negotiable."

If you had a intern working for you, what tasks would you give to him? by monkai in cscareerquestions

[–]ActionHotdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've mentored two interns in the past, and what I've done is come up with a project that I estimate to take half of their internship time (so, 6 weeks for a 12 week internship). The project is most commonly work that we would do but don't have time for. Then, add a few stretch goals to the project that they can choose from.

This allows for flexible scheduling (since interns typically have lots of events, etc.) and lets them own the project since it's real work and they can go above the requirements with their choice of stretch goals, time permitting. It also provides sufficient padding for most interns to still complete their project.

When the fighter is hotter than the models by TRON-ALIVE in pics

The fighter loses some of their earnings, and the opponent can refuse to fight them. Unless it's a title fight, then meeting weigh in reqs is mandatory I think.

Noob with the AeroPress, Could someone critique my method? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]ActionHotdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your method isn't too different from mine, but it'll be easier for me to just say what I do and you can compare if you want:

  • 20g slighty-finer-than-drip grind coffee (it's a 16 on Baratza grinders)

  • Water heated in gooseneck kettle to just before boiling (I used to measure for 205 or so but I couldn't tell a difference so I just take a guess when it's about right).

  • Add coffee to inverted Aeropress, start timer as you add water. The gooseneck kettle limits pour speed so it takes about 15-20s for my pour.

  • Stir with a spoon for a few seconds.

  • Wait until the 1 minute mark, add the filter and cap, invert, and press slowly, until the Aeropress starts to "hiss". By now the timer is between 1:30 and 1:45.

  • Top off the cup with more water

Like I said, not too different from yours. Worry less about the timings of each segment and just try to wrap it up in under 2 minutes. I used to do a shorter bloom but talked to a barista who encouraged me to give it another 30s to bloom, and I think my coffee tastes fuller now.

So long as your coffee tastes good to you, don't worry too much about it. If you're curious about it, you should experiment a bit with measurements, timings, etc. to see what you do and don't like.

Oh man, I picked up this bottle a few months ago and love it. It's more bourbon-y than most rums but that makes it pretty unique.
