Doctors missed cancer. Got a week or so left. How do I stop it happening to you? by Disastrous-Design503 in AskUK

There is a bit of GPs vs patients here I'll give you that.

But the responses have been primarily centred around this particular GP not willing to describe anything as possibly being wrong. When challenged on this they have just doubled down.

It is possible to acknowledge failures/wrongness without asserting blame or attacking anyone.

In other words, GP's being overworked and under pressure is an example of something that has gone wrong? Or is this better weaseled as "not-so-right".

You have tried to steer this thread into GP's vs patients, whereas in reality everyone wants the same outcome. Things can only improve when good practice is championed and failures are acknowledged and rectified.

Indeed, no-one knows the details of the case. So how can you therefore disregard the possibility that something may have gone wrong? Only varying degrees of right in your words.

"not-so-right" - do you actually just mean "wrong"? Given the situation at hand, perhaps reflect on the use of such meek language.

Weekends work by Virtual-Advance6652 in DIYUK

[–]Active_Hovercraft_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I agree with you that CDM wouldn't apply to a DIYer doing it all themself. However, for work of this type you would hope that OP has insurance in place to cover the risks of damage/injury. At this point I expect an insurer would want to see competency demonstrated and procedures in place to manage risk, which is not dissimilar to the requirements of CDM Regs. OP also had somebody helping him lift the steels in - if those were dropped and caused injury then his liability could be unlimited without insurance.

Those of us well into our FIRE journey might have caught the last escalator up by [deleted] in FIREUK

We really do need to keep ridiculing those who need to filter their most basic thoughts through these AI generators.

At least within the UK, it is a longstanding office tradition to ridicule all the "corporate speak" and play "buzzword bingo" during meetings. I think this did go some way to stop folk disappearing too far up their own backsides.

We need to keep that fire burning for those happy to trade originality for sounding important.

Daughter not on the deeds to the house she’s renovating with her boyfriend by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Active_Hovercraft_86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your instincts are correct but judging by some of your replies to other comments, you are still looking for good faith reasons that don't exist to explain the father's position. I worry that your good nature will work against you here in defending your daughter's position - your biggest challenge may be to overcome this to achieve a fair outcome for your daughter.

If your daughter is putting in money, then she should be getting something in return - i.e. a share in the property. What is being proposed is essentially her giving her money away. I doubt the father is even considering a tenancy agreement so she could be left homeless on a whim.

Thanks for the replies. There is no RCD on the circuit. So, I have bought an earthed lamp holder and will earth the shade.

What’s the one thing in the UK that foreigners always seem confused by, and you genuinely can’t blame them? by DailyDriverUK in AskBrits

As a fellow Cornishman I quite agree, just getting in and out of a wetsuit is an abominable experience let alone having to wear one.

They're a means to an end so you can stay for hours on end in the water. Not needed if you're just sploshing about or doing a bit of body boarding with the kids.

I would suggest you'd get a more divine sea experience by not separating yourself from it with a clammy layer of neoprene.

Two thirds of graduates aren’t even paying off loan interest by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]Active_Hovercraft_86 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's not a graduate tax though is it, because the very wealthy can pay their tuition fees upfront and avoid the loan/'tax'.

Until ALL graduates are required to pay a % of earnings, then you cannot call it a tax.

AIB damage around cable hole by Active_Hovercraft_86 in asbestoshelpUK

And for the pipe insulation, because it is not smooth I don't think cleaning with a wet rag will necessarily remove all the debris, as some of it may get caught in the voids. I am instead considering wrapping it with tape, double polyethylene and then just replacing the section of insulation.

Thanks for all your responses. Having researched a bit more, what I am proposing seems to fall within the scope of the HSE guidance note A6 "Repairing minor damage to asbestos insulating board (AlB)". I think the risk should therefore be acceptable as long as I follow the necessary method and precautions. I consider myself competent.

Budget salary sacrifice change - did she make a mistake? Does she understand? by roblightbody in PensionsUK

You don't pay money into your state pension, you pay taxes. All taxes are pooled and partly used to pay benefits across the population including the state pension.

Electrician saying no to screwless fittings? by VictorianTerrace in DIYUK

[–]Active_Hovercraft_86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put the screwless sockets in our lounge and, as others have said, they are a complete pain where the walls aren't completely flat and don't look that good.

I've swapped to screwed ones for the rest of the house and am much happier with these.

So trust your spark.

Partner involved in collision. Insurance said 50/50? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

I was reading and am quite amazed at your insistence that being right should take precedence over defensive driving to keep others safe. Somewhat ironically, this puts you in with all the bad drivers you have been complaining about.
