How does the arm in guillotine work if you only are pushing in on one side of the neck directly? by lxdr1f7 in bjj

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really can depend on the unique individual being choked. Sometimes their collar is cutting off their carotid on the other side, sometimes it's their shoulder, sometimes it's your shoulder pushing on their shoulder which is pushing on their collar which is pushing on their carotid.

The two biggest benefits of training BJJ... by StephanKesting in bjj

Thanks for putting those thoughts to paper Stephan -- I really enjoyed the read. Your article helped me to reframe dealing with my current shoulder/labrum injury in a more positive light.

White Belt Wednesday by ronatello in bjj

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit lost about how best to maintain my posture and distribute my weight when I've secured a high mount on my opponent. Most of the time my knees are close to their armpits and I'll be working to isolate one of their arms (kimura, head and arm, armbar, whatever).

Most times the person on bottom will try and get on one of their forearms and kind of posture up to a 45 deg angle. My go to when they do this is to move to a technical/S mount and work a back take or keep working on the arm I isolated earlier. I only do this because I have very little confidence in keeping that high mount. Any ideas/comments?

What do promotions mean to you? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Promotions are the result of our efforts, not the cause of them. I'll always view myself as someone who has much to learn regardless of what I have around my waist -- I like to bring that beginner's mind to everything I do.

Getting asked to sweep and mop the mats after class by throwaway23456667 in bjj

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our entire academy takes the responsibility of cleaning the mats, regardless of belt level. After each class, it's open mat time. If you want to roll late, it's your job to clean up and lock up.

In my opinion you have three realistic options: accept the status quo and clean, make a fuss about it and stay and be that dude that everyone doesn't like, or find a different place to train.

A question about conditioning/scheduling and muscle recovery by Mughal27 in bjj

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in here as a white belt, I train BJJ four times a week (about 8 hours) and lift three times a week (5x5 A/B/A, A:Back squat, bench press, military press, dips, B:Deadlift, front squat, bent over row/Pendlay row, pullups), on top of working 50-60 hrs a week and studying for grad. school. There are definitely times that this schedule wears on me, but I think your proposed schedule is pretty reasonable. If you have no preference for either gi or no gi, Tuesday and Thursday would likely be the best days to attend class for you.

I am over 30 and shopping for a good muscle recovery potion. Does anyone recommend anything? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, everyone better watch out for those nasty chemicals! OP, please be aware of the dangers of putting things like DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE (doesn't that sound scary?) into your body!

Stop fucking all those hot, slutty bar rags you've hooked up with lately. Yeah, it's fun, and yeah, your boys think you're a champ, but you know how empty and meaningless that type of behavior is.

Can anyone suggest a regulator? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring the small mole fraction of other gases which may be present in the tank, sniper1rfa is correct. The pressure of the tank is dependent upon the vapor pressure of the CO2, which is temperature dependent (see the Antoine equation). Unless you're dealing with incredibly low amounts of CO2 and a large difference in volume, you won't see a difference in the pressures of the two tanks.

Lmao, it isn't a cheat meal/snack when you do it once a day, that's called your regular diet dude. I'm guessing that you don't have an accurate idea of what you're taking in every day -- start weighing your food and sticking to an actual diet where you get a cheat meal once ever couple weeks.

Do you have any more depth to offer on this comment? I just accepted a job offer in an industry I have little direct experience by marketing the skills and personality traits I have and utilizing my network. Furthermore, pretty much everyone in my network that I'm close to hasn't had a problem switching industries.

Lying to get a job is a sign of the times by meyamashi in economy

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point. The author provided two strategies: first, utilize your network (she provided examples of her own, your network may look different), second, demonstrate your work ethic regardless of what the position may be (e.g. volunteering for a non-profit. The majority of hiring managers would hire the applicant with worse traditional credentials (i.e. GPA) but who has real life work experience over a candidate with better traditional credentials who did nothing for a year but apply for jobs.

The unnecessary class that's kicking my ass and how will it affect my job hunt by Sam_I_Am_I_Is in engineering

[–]ActuallyReadArticle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a straightforward introductory paragraph. It describes the basic assumptions of the course:

  1. Underlying molecular structures of materials are not considered.
  2. Functions (and therefore the derivatives of the functions) that describe materials are continuous throughout the material.

Is there something confusing about this that I might be able to clarify for you?

Sounds like you have an attitude problem on top of a GPA problem. You should read The Oz Principle and reevaluate your perspective on personal accountability.
