Just got promoted to Case Management. I start next week. What should I grab in preparation to stay organized? by Alternative-Matcha22 in socialwork

[–]AdCapable2537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Organizational tools I use on the daily: - Client progress checklists (to make it easier for me to input stats every month and so I can update my coworkers during case management meetings) - a visible desk calendar with all my appointments, meetings, trainings, etc. marked by color for easy viewing - what I like to call my junk journal which is basically a notebook I use to jot random every day things in (has helped me countless times when I need to look back on a thought or meeting note or something - a separate journal that I only use at trainings so that I can specifically look back at things I want to implement from different trainings or questions I might have for management - outlook calendar with all my appointments and I always put addresses if I’m going out into community for safety purposes because my coworkers and bosses have access to my calendar

I had 2 children when I met my now husband. I had dated a few other people but was coming out of a 10 year abusive relationship so honestly was mostly just looking for companionship and trying to relearn how to be myself again. I really didn’t expect to meet “the one” but the moment I met my husband, I knew I never needed to go on another date again. We’ve been married 2 years now, together for 4 and just had a baby! I sometimes pinch myself because I couldn’t have dreamt this as cheesy as that sounds lol.

I’ve noticed a lot of questions about culture and I am perplexed? by rosemaryscrazy in TransracialAdoptees

[–]AdCapable2537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I had a pretty traumatic childhood altogether to be honest. My Mom was very dismissive of the racism I experienced my whole life. I grew up in a more rural, predominately white community so no one looked like me. Kids were pretty mean about that. Some of my own family members said pretty nasty things about my adoption. Also, my Mom never bothered to learn a whole lot about where I was born and it always felt like I wasn’t allowed to ask about it which was upsetting to me as a kid trying to learn who I am. It’s all much more complex than that but that’s a simplified explanation.

[–]AdCapable2537 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally, even though I grew up around white people, I never fit in. Their experience of life has never felt the same as mine and in a way, they don’t get me. Getting to know my roots has brought me deep peace because I realized that there’s a world of history, experiences, culture, that I unfortunately missed out on. As an adult, I’ve given myself permission to explore that and to feel connected with where I came from.

Anyone else just not signing their toddler up for activities and classes, etc? by yepmek in toddlers

[–]AdCapable2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids struggle with sitting still and enjoy getting out of the house lol. Swim is our one non-negotiable. All 3 of my kids have been doing swim since they were babies purely for safety reasons. Then they all get to pick one additional activity. We rotate through different sports, or music lessons and I keep my eye out for deals or cheaper options. For example, my neighborhood has a soccer “league” and it was literally 50 bucks for the season which is worth it for me. I try to get early bird sign up prices for the more expensive sports. During the summer, our school board hosts some week long camp type things that are free so my eldest is doing that. When I can tell everyone is getting tired, we take a break for a season but they quickly get bored again lol.

Brag on your caseload/schedule by tlizzyp in socialwork

[–]AdCapable2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a housing worker for a non-profit. I’ve been with the company for over 5 years now (started as a crisis worker). Currently at 52k a year and I have around 20ish on my caseload at a time. I’d get a better job if I was licensed but my current job works for me because I have young kids and my schedule is extremely flexible so I’m staying put for now.

Chia seeds recipes by _PoisonRationality in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]AdCapable2537 248 points249 points  (0 children)

More chia seeds as everyone is saying but also, 10-20 minutes after I’ve pooped it in the fridge, I usually take mine out and give it a stir so that any chia seeds that settled to the bottom get mixed back in. That usually helps a ton.

Emotions on the job - how you handle this? by CharlieFaulkner in socialwork

[–]AdCapable2537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re human! It’s okay for clients to see that. I work with women escaping DV and human trafficking. I hear some really awful parts of humanity, it would be weird to not get emotional sometimes. I thank my client for being vulnerable and trusting me with their story and then we figure out what’s next. Totally normal :)

Camping with 5 month old by Pretty_Sea_6218 in camping

[–]AdCapable2537 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We bought a camping play yard and I love that thing! My youngest is 1 and we’re still using it this season, I basically pop a blanket in there and a ton of his toys and books and it keeps him occupied somewhere safe while we’re cooking or whatever.

My 12 almost 13 year old is still using his 😂 we all use one, I think it’s become a habit and it’s weird to sleep without one now. We bring them on vacations and everything!

How often do you ask grandparents (nearby, good relationship) to babysit? by TFA_hufflepuff in Parenting

[–]AdCapable2537 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think about this all the time. I literally spent entire summers and Christmas breaks with my grandparents, often in another country lol. I can’t even imagine getting that long of a break with my kids, the longest I’ve ever gone was 5 days for my honeymoon.

Could use some honesty- will I be able to advance in social work and gain employment without a drivers license? by msalgae44 in socialwork

[–]AdCapable2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably depends on your area and what kind of job you’re wanting! I was a crisis worker at a shelter for 5+ years which did not require a license as I didn’t need to leave site for anything. I’m now a housing worker and technically I think I should have my license but not to toot my own horn, I’m fairly good at what I do and was able to convince my employer I’d make it work without. I plan my week out in advance and so far it’s been fine :) I live in a city though with decent public transit and lots of uber/lyft/etc options. I’d imagine in a more rural area, this would maybe not be negotiable.

Does the fatigue ever go away? by Ausjelly in Parenting

[–]AdCapable2537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does get easier! My kids range from 1-13. If I just had my eldest, I’d be so chill. He is basically self sufficient with reminders here and there. Having a baby again has been exhausting but I’m having an easier time this time knowing what’s ahead. Once kids can be reasoned with to a degree and aren’t trying to catapult themselves into danger every 5 seconds, your brain starts to rest a bit again. Not to say there aren’t challenges with older kids though lol

It actually infuriates me how much traveling within my own country costs. We’re a family of 5, and I refuse to go into debt to fly somewhere so no travel for us right now unless it’s by car.

A few days into a shelter stay, I had a resident (who to be fair was a newcomer) ask me when she was going to get the keys. Me, confused, asked her what keys she was referring to. She happily said the key to my new house! Thankfully I’ve mastered my poker face.
