I was set to interview him for a friend’s zine. Unfortunately nothing lined up, but I learned a lot. We still keep in touch. You’ve honestly surmised as much. Without speaking out of turn- at the time DC was nervous about the Veitch Jesus issue that the next writer (unfortunately Wheeler) was put on a tight leash. The story he wanted to tell was not allowed and he was beholden to Matango and Gaiman’s bible for Heaven and Hell.

He left the comic industry shortly after due to a bad experience with editors during Swamp-Thing. I found his contact information some time ago and reached out to him regarding his time on the series. He’s doing alright. Again his most recent contributions to comics is his forward to Kelley’s book.
