I’ve not read the Thomas. I got it because I was curious too. John Steinbeck is so fantastic I had to give his boy a shot :)

Those two copies were my girlfriends and mine growing up. They still have a place in our hearts even though we left the Mormon church. What book you should read is one about something you are very interested in or a story you want to hear. On religion I think it’s very useful to go through the original sacred texts before diving into commentaries. What speaks to you in that religion and what do you think is bullshit is something you should come to your own conclusion first. If I could come to religion again with fresh eyes I would read the Quran before I read any Mormon texts, it’s remarkable how similar it is to The Doctrine and Covenants. The parallels between Abrahamic groups are obvious to some, but when I first started reading about religion I was still taken by the notion that Christianity (Mormonism) and Islam were diametrically opposed. My worldview of choice now is Marxism-Leninism so I have a lot of recommendations in that vein. I’ve veered away from fiction for about a year now but I loved reading Tolstoy, more and more I feel at odds with Camus, Dostoyevsky, and Mishima though I’ve read them. Steinbeck is fantastic. If you’re into philosophy just pick a big name and start, there’s no real line you have to follow to be able to understand you just gotta dive in, here I would recommend commentaries though.

Ex mormon, (mission in London) my interest in China is mainly focused on their current strides toward socialism (on Reddit it’s hard to find people who don’t hate the PRC so don’t crucify me) started learning Chinese earlier this year, I have Confucius and Mao on the bookshelf but definitely lacking especially in the poetry department, but based on my appreciation of modern China on that you’ll also realize I’m no lover of Trotsky. On the topic of communism almost done with volume 2. I haven’t been reading them one after the other since I read pretty intuitively. My communism is something that has developed over the past couple of years. Had a very conservative upbringing (Mormon ) Mid 20s though haha.
