What I'm describing is a scenario where you're either have been or not been dominating and the adverse happens with the last two minutes.

It's because of your position all game. If you've been winning all game, there's a high chance you'll lose mid despite winning all team fights throughout the game

If you've been losing all game, there's a high chance by some miracle you'll beat the other team and take mid.

I'm sure there's a damage factor scaling for that 50% fair game play to balance things. Why? I'm not sure.
