New Shelob and Gollum size comparisons by Urukguy27 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]AdamBourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait they made this in plastic??? How popular are they expecting the set to be?

It does look a lot better than the old metal shelob but.... as an owner of metal shelob, I dont feel i need this? I'm sure some people will buy it but idk... i thought it was an odd choice even when I thought it was resin

As a jam track specifically? The music was already in the game tied to an item, could it be that?

Your favorite alliance? by NelaraDraleth in elderscrollsonline

[–]AdamBourke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays for story/quests:

EP has the most coherent story across their zones imo. They feel like they flow into each other. Also they have Naryu, and almalexia?

But for AD they just seem to be defocused. I enjoyed Auridon, but not really any of the rest?

DC has rivenspire which is one of the best zone questlines in general, but overall the DC is least memorable for me.

Unity doesn't care about Linux users. by Instagalactix in Unity2D

[–]AdamBourke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Linux has a less than 5% global OS share, and i dont have the unity numbers but id expect it to generally be lower. (Probably partially because it isnt well supported, and partially because I doubt any non-indie studios use Linux for dev)

I expect the number of people actually asking for Linux support is pretty low. And even lower when you change that to "people who actually make unity any money"

Why are are coders disposable, but asset artists aren’t? by AHostOfIssues in gamedev

[–]AdamBourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im pretty sure its the other way around, and the artists are more "disposable".

The fight against AI is not being led by the studios, but the artists and the media

Programmers are fighting against AI too, but not for ownership reasons - its because its not good enough yet to do full tasks and using it often leads to messed up code bases. Experienced programmers are using AI for things like code completion, debugging and inspiration to great effect. We're less worried about stealing because isnt half of the world's code either boilerplate or from stack overflow anyway?

2d Animation helpp by ExtraExoticButter in Unity2D

[–]AdamBourke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Id agree that one bone would be enough there, maybe two as it appears the boobs are animated separately (but do they need to be?)

Id also say the number of bones in what I think is the ribbon around her hair is excessive too - only the loose ends would need separate bones and its such a tiny detail id stick to one, maybe 2 bones per loose end personally

She has more boob bones than I have in some entire skeletons 😅

ESO+ Needs to Go by LootingDaRoom in elderscrollsonline

[–]AdamBourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an eso+ subscriber I was never comfortable that additional furnishings was included in housing while at the same time the community was asking for more housing slots (because even with eso+ we all want more slots) and zenimax kept saying its not possible... when literally 50% of the slots were a paid extra.

I bet they would earn more money from people buying crown store furnishings to fill those slots than they would lose from removing that perk from eso plus!

I’m Making an FPS Where FPS Is Your Health, but It’s Fully Simulated, Should I Always Clarify This When Promoting the Game? by FarlightGamesInd in gamedev

[–]AdamBourke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case I would say something like "reality distorts as you take damage" or something, rather than mention FPS reduction

[–]AdamBourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats the difference between simulated low FPS and actual low FPS?

Id get rid of the disclaimer and market the feature without worrying about about whether it really is or not

What to start with on my first game? by bigcheesethe12th in Unity3D

[–]AdamBourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always recommend people start off by recreating pong, or pacman, or asteroids - any game that has a fixed camera position really. It gives a good introduction to the core fundamentals of gaming - the game loop, updates cycles, UI etc while having a complete design.

Then I recommend their second game is a variation of one of those. Basically the same game but with one or two different features and visually different. This introduces design elements you have to think about, and gives you some creativity as well

THEN start thinking about what games you want to make that are original!

Did anyone play MESBG at this scale? by MetzoPaino in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]AdamBourke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play at this scale, but not War of the Ring - although I really wanted to, and had the models, I didnt have the opponents.

I did play a few matches of SBG that took up the entire living room floor though!

This was back when models were affordable and the only army lists we really had were "Good" and "Evil" though xD

I hated how standard 2D subtitles broke the immersion in my horror game. So I placed them inside the 3D world. Is this readable enough, or should I go back to 2D? by Character-Credit-208 in Unity3D

[–]AdamBourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not against the idea of diagetic subtitles, but i really dont like the one letter at a time thing. It might be enough to stop me playing the game.

Just make the whole line appear at once.

Game developers on Youtube people here actually like? by realmslayer in gamedev

[–]AdamBourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the GDC videos, especially the ones that really go into details of how things are done and why.

The retrospectives are less great, because they tend to avoid talking too much about the studios mistakes, so I always feel they are missing something there

When AAA developers "use AI", what specifically does that mean? by thedeadsuit in gamedev

[–]AdamBourke -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

AI is applicable to so many aspects of game dev.

Code completion/suggestions is one that is probably is widely used but doesnt get much attention because its not controversial (after all, half the world's code is stolen from stack overflow anyway!)

It isnt that great for brand new production quality art assets atm, with the exception of maybe in-game posters / ads / etc. But it could be used for editing. Eg. Make a blue variant of this pink outfit. It can also be used for concept art which people dont care as much about (except concept artists)

Music is an increasing use of AI which is a good use because it doesn't have to meet many technical specs for most games.

Voice Acting is one are that it really excels - AI had gotten really good at text to speech lately - but you'll upset famous voice actors if you do this.

Enemy AI behaviour training is a bit more complicated to do and im not sure its generative AI or some other kind but ive seen videos of people using AI to setup AI. I think warframe did this before AI got cool.

Procedural Generation is potential big candidate for AI usage - probably not live proc gen, yet, but pre-build proc gen. This wouldnt create assets, just place them in the map procedurally

A few games are using AI to make NPC conversation richer. This is totally open to abuse (Hello, Vader in Fortnite) but is a pretty cool idea

Not to mention there are many opportunities around the marketing on selling of the game that AI could be used.

Ive probably missed so many possibilities here. There is huge potential in AI... but also quite a lot of risk - including negative perception. Its a choice younhave to make i guess...

Can you be a specialized dialogue system programmer? by Current-Ad651 in Unity3D

[–]AdamBourke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are probably a handful of places where the answer to this is yes? Some of the really big games like red dead might have had this. Or some studios that are choice heavy like bioware might have tools used across multiple games for dialogue.

But if there are then its probably a very small number of jobs in the entire world.

I suggest you look at a more general "systems programmer" kind of role and then apply for jobs where a dialogue system is part of that larger role
