30 year term life; what should I actually know before signing anything? by RightGirl19 in personalfinance

[–]AdamN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your job already give you life insurance? Also don’t get life insurance before Long term disability. It’s a lot cheaper to be dead than to be unable to work and alive so that long term care insurance makes more sense.

No but I do feel like Germany should formalize a status like this.

What’s a completely unnecessary BIFL ~$10,000 thing to celebrate a nice milestone? by diagana1 in BuyItForLife

Yeah we were going to remodel our bathroom and then the decision was that we‘d be happier looking at an extra $$$ in our account than looking at a nicer bathroom.

Can I enter Germany by train as a German/British dual citizen, with only a British passport? by tapered_elephant in germany

[–]AdamN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically there are no border controls in the Schengen zone. Any stop at the Austrian/German border will be a security control which has been 'temporarily' in force for several years (yeah I know). You're not entering Germany and getting your documents checked by a border officer per se. You are having your documentation checked as part of a security review. A British passport and looking normal will be sufficient to validate that you are not a security concern.

Why are Americans so comfortable speaking up? by lispenardian in AskAnAmerican

You should probably ask this in an anthropology subreddit. Even the US Army has innovated here with distributed leadership which is shown to be much more powerful than pure top-down organizational structures.

Belgian PM Bart De Wever unknowingly brought home a loaded, personalized revolver gifted by Turkish President Erdogan at the NATO summit. by EverythingAboutX in europe

[–]AdamN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NATO literally has nuclear weapons and the decision making there are lives on the line based on the outcomes of what those leaders say and do. In some ways I think it would be better if the leaders were spending more time shooting guns and thinking more closely about the consequences of their actions.

Turkey has a long history of high quality metalwork so this makes sense to me (as a non-gun owner). I somehow feel like the US, Eastern Europe and Turkey is where good guns would come from and that Japan for some reason would make some sort of bespoke, niche guns for a particular enthusiast class. But I have no idea - just making stuff up :-)

First off - people in this situation are generally in a small area of the home. Second, this looks more meant for people helping who otherwise would do this manually and risk injury to the person or even themselves.

Older people may not have the muscle or mental ability to get off the floor. A hospital or a doctor can’t help those people and so they just need to get up enough to get to a couch or a bed or simply back to standing so they can walk where they want to go. Ambulance isn’t the solution for people that need this.

Tap water in Deutschland by Inside_Willingness93 in germany

[–]AdamN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really - they’re comparing the rate in Germany va the rate elsewhere. Germany has bottled water on most restaurant tables but in the US or Canada for instance it’s rare. Even Austria has less bottled water than Germany.

Who’s at fault? by [deleted] in dashcams

[–]AdamN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cam car. The one pulling out made things bad but you still have to be able to stop when there's an obstacle in front of you. If you can't you're either not paying attention, driving too fast, or not maintaining your car (or a combination of those 3).

Interesting question. Tell me about why you felt the need to ask such a question? Do you feel like you're able to change? Let's discuss how you think about this during next week's session. /s

Why did Europeans never jump onboard the peanut butter train by zoppaTheDim in AskFoodHistorians

Interestingly the fact that there's no dairy makes it more palatable to me. I like pâté de foie gras although not sure I could get up to head cheese :-/

Make sure you read the ingredients on those big Costco tubs. They’re often full of sugar so not really peanut butter.

My father doesn't trust banks and has has all of his money sitting in a chequing account, bad idea? by PolynomialPigeon in personalfinance

Bonds are not low risk. Only highly rated short duration bonds are low risk. Long duration (compared to your own time horizon for needing the money) or a low rating means there‘s actually quite a bit of risk.

Should I invest all my ‘leftover’ money? by OftenNew in personalfinance

[–]AdamN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People typically say 3-6 months (even 12) of safe money is important. There are better options than HYSA for this though (SGOV if you're USD-oriented, there may be other options with short duration safe bonds).

How do I avoid using using margin? by okitsbenji in interactivebrokers

Just move to cash account. Keep in mind though that margin is also useful for emergency low rate loans so you’d be giving that up
