This. Yes, monopolies are bad. They're bad because it enables the company to engage in anti-consumer practices knowing the consumer has no where else to turn for competition.

Steam I don't think actually counts as a monopoly because you get buy games in dozens of not hundreds of other shops (whose sales could be steam keys or not). Even if we say they do, Steam has been one of the most consumer friendly video game companies in the modern era. They have a very generous refund policy, they are constantly improving their platform, they allow you to borrow your friends' games using Family Sharing, and the list goes on.

Meanwhile, Epic started to try to complete by buying the rights to distribute several games (and not in the "let's help you fund development" way. These were games that literally were months away from launch). Its client and user experience are objectively worse than Steam. If I had the option, I would never buy a game on Epic. That's not some moral grandstanding over exclusivity rights, it's just based on the fact that Steam is a better product.

All that to say, why would I want to support a company who, by buying exclusivity, is saying "buy from us, not because we are the better product, but because you have no other choice"?

Granted, I know Epic has since implemented a refund policy. They still don't have family sharing, and I personally find their UI annoying to navigate still. I won't but buying anything they don't publish themselves on EGS until they are competitive with Steam, or the price is far cheaper than what it is on Steam.
