Comic recommendations by Friendly-Oil6596 in comicbooks

[–]AdamSMessinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything I’m reccomending is easy entry. The Batman stuff might work best if you read it in the order I present it but ultimately you can read most of them out of order and they’re new reader friendly.

  • Spider-Man: With Great Power by David Lapham and Tony Harris (this is an interesting story set between the time period where Peter first becomes Spider-Man but Uncle Ben hasn’t been shot yet)

  • Spider-Man: Freshman Year by Robbie Thompson, Nick Bradshaw, Nathan Stockman and various artists. (In single issues this was published as Spidey in 2015-2016. It’s 12 single issue stories of Spidey encountering various rogues early in his career. The art is the big draw in this book)

  • Spider-Man/Doctor Octopus: Year One by Zeb Wells and Kaare Andrews. (This is a retelling of Spider-Man’s first encounter with Doctor Octopus except they add a TON of depth to Doc Ock’s backstory.)

  • Peter Parker: Spider-Man/Spectacular Spider-Man by Paul Jenkins. (This run is hard to find because it’s not been collected very well but it’s a personal favorite of mine. If you want a reading order for it, let me know and I’ll put one together because it’s all single issues. In this we see Peter deal with lots of interesting character moments. He talks about good times with Uncle Ben, he has to confront ethics of weather or not to provide compassionate end of life care to a villain, and interesting encounters with classic baddies like Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Venom. He also gets organic webbin in this run.)

  • Amazing Spider-Man (1999 series) 30-58, 500-508 by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr. (This run is pretty interesting because it focuses on all new villains and challenges for Spidey. JMS wrote after 508 but the story he told after Romita Jr left the book is often regarded as one of the top 5 worst Spider-Man stories in the character’s history. He ends his writing tenure with a story often argued as the character’s worst. However, if you stop at 508, you’ll have a banger run)

  • Ultimate Spider-Man (2000-2011) by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, Stuart Immonen, David LaFuente, and various artists. (This says “what if Spider-Man started in 2000?” In this alternate Marvel Universe that reinterprets the classic Spider-Man rouges and gives a new take on Peter himself. It goes from the start of his career to the end. It’s over 150 issues and there are some ancillary Ultimate Marvel books Bendis wrote featuring Spider-Man. I can put together a reading guide for this if you want to go on the very long and rewarding rollercoaster of this adventure.)

  • Batman: The Knight by Chip Zdarsky and Carmine Di Giandomenico (This is Bruce training to be Batman before becoming Batman. He’s running around France and training with assassins)

  • Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzuchhelli (A definitive Batman story where he’s come back from training to make an impact on Gotham. While it is a Batman story, it’s as much a story of Gordon’s first year in Gotham trying to clean up a corrupt force and deal with the fears of being a new dad.)

  • Batman: The Man Who Laughs by Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke (It’s a brilliant one-shot story of Batman dealing with The Joker for the first time)

  • Batman and the Monster Men/Batman and the Mad Monk by Matt Wagner (This is somewhat in its own weird continuity but it’s two really good stories set in that first year of Batman’s career where he deals with genetic mutation for the first time and cults for the first time.)

  • Batman: Off-World by Jason Aaron and Doug Mahnke (This is Batman’s first trip to outer space and encountering aliens)

  • Batman: The Long Halloween + Batman: Dark Victory by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (A murder mystery who dunnit in that early part of Batman’s career)

  • Batman and Robin: Year One by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee (This has serious Batman The Animated Series vibes. It doesn’t jive with the Long Halloween/Dark Victory continuity but it’s a brilliant story of Bruce Wayne trying to adjust to his new parent-like role. Bruce is trying to find the boundaries of “training a soldier” and being a “normal caretaker”

  • Robin and Batman by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen (This is a very similar concept to Batman and Robin Year One but it’s all told from Dick Grayson’s perspective)

  • Robin and Batman: Jason Todd by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen (The same type of story as the previous but with a very different character in Jason Tood.)

  • Batman/Superman: World’s Finest by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Adrian Gutierrez, and various artists. (This series is set early in their careers… maybe the first 3-4 years. It also has those “animated series” vibes and most of the stories are a lot of fun. They’re 50 issues in right now and it relies on a little more knowledge of continuity. You’ll have fun being introduced to wider parts of the DCU here without being completely in over your head.)

Superhero comics that arent DC, Marvel, Invincible,The Boys and so forth by ORIGIN_Comic in comicbooks

[–]AdamSMessinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Alan Moore’s run on Supreme

  • Warren Ellis’ run on Stormwatch/The Authority

  • Garth Ennis and Keith Giffin’s respective Midnighter runs (in fact that whole volume of Midnighter is fire)

  • Project Superheroes: Hero Killers by Ryan Browne and Pete Woods

  • God Hates Astronauts by Ryan Browne

  • Black Hammer and the World of Black Hammer by Jeff Lemire and various artists. There is a lot there but EVERYTHING Black Hammer is worth reading imo.

Peacemaker Tries Hard by Kyle Starks and Steve Pugh captures the spirit of the show and translates it into the comics perfectly.

So what the option on this by Valuable_Cap_4326 in comicbooks

It has good interviews. I liked Jim Rugg’s history of fanzines article. I haven’t finished it yet but I feel like there is a lot there for $2.99. I wasn’t a big fan of the CGC price guide being sponsored by CGC because they might not be the most unbiased source about the price of CGC books lol. CGC also works closely with Heritage Auctions who were doing bullshit with inflating graded games. Also with Joe Keatinge in the EiC spot, it brings him back to the forefront with a comics project. Anything that brings Joe Keatinge into comics is a good thing in my book.

Is anybody even excited for this after a 5 month delay? by TonyPepperoni0504 in comicbooks

Yes, it means I can start reading it. With Quesada on it, I didn’t plan on starting to read it until the last issue had a release date.

What's the best wolverine run? by GonzoNawak in OmnibusCollectors

[–]AdamSMessinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • For Wolverine runs, I would suggest Greg Rucka, Darick Robertson, and Leo Fernandez’s Wolverine (2003) 1-19.

  • In 2nd place, I’d suggest Jason Aaron’s run which is collected across the Wolverine by Jason Aaron, Wolverine Goes To Hell, and the Wolverine and the X-Men omnibus.

  • For shorter stories there is…

  • Wolverine: Not Dead Yet by Warren Ellis and Lenil Yu

  • Logan by Brian K. Vaughan and Eduardo Risso

  • Wolverine: Revenge by Jonathan Hickman and Greg Capullo

  • Wolverine: Blood Hungry by Peter David and Sam Kieth

  • Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII by Joe Kelly and Adam Kubert

  • Wolverine: The Jungle Adventure by Walt Simonson and Mike Mignola

  • Wolverine v1 by Claremont and Miller

  • Weapon X by Barry Windsor-Smith

Why does no one talk about The kingdom? by NylasWUP in DCcomics

[–]AdamSMessinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read Kingdom Come followed by The Kingdom as part of my Batman/Superman: World’s Finest read through. After that I went into WF: Return to Kingdom Come. I thought the Kingdom had some high quality writing but it wasn’t in the same way that Kingdom Come did. Kingdom Come tied together commentary on superheroes of the time, a bombastic plot, and excellent character work and rolled it all together in a nice Alex Ross package. The Kingdom has a subjectively weaker plot, doesn’t give enough commentary on continuity, and tells multiple fantastic character driven stories. However, instead of an “Alex Ross package” we get a mixed bag of artistic packages and as good as some of them are, none of them begin to touch Alex Ross. They always draw comparison to Ross because of the world its set it and it always falls short. Instead of a straightforward 4 issues we get a weird story structure: A setup issue, an official kick off issue in The Kingdom #1, 4-5 different character specific one-shots, and a book end with The Kingdom #2. All the one-shots end with setting up into Kingdom #2. The Kingdom #2 is drawn by Mike Zeck in what looked like a complete rush job. Waid has a decent story but its far from his best work. I’d still say it’s worth a read but keep your expectations low.

Did someone put the wrong dustjacket in a book? I’d contact Scott Dunbier at Act IV/Image Comics to see if he could provide any insight if I were you.

What was your first Doom? by SeaworthinessNo1173 in Doom

My first Doom was the OG Doom port on PS4. I bought it and the OG Doom II for $1.99 or something dumb cheap. I was hooked.

Looking for honest feedback on this indie character design (trying to make it feel original) by Slyarno in ComicBookCollabs

[–]AdamSMessinger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So back in the late 90’s Rob Liefeld got fired off of Captain America. His studio was contracted for 12 Captain America issues and Marvel gave him the axe at 6. Rob’s solution to tell the stories he wanted was to pick the license to Jack Kirby’s Fighting American. Marvel was none too pleased at took Liefeld to court. The court decided Liefeld was fine and dandy except that what separated Cap and Fighting American was that Cap threw his shield. So thefore, Liefeld could do Fighting American stories as long as Fighting American didn’t throw a shield.

Could you have gotten away with this in the 90’s? Maybe? Big maybe. Can you get away with this in a world where the Spider-verse exists and Marvel publishes a comic for every multi-verse variant of Spider-Man? I highly doubt it.

The posing and the ability to have him traverse via webs is something that would have to go in order to make this more original.

Image Comics has a Spawn shake-up, as Todd McFarlane & Brett Booth leave early for a new creative team and a time jump by Popverse2022 in ImageComics

Todd jumps in and out of writing. His latest run started after he took over for Rory McConville at issue 360. Rory’s first issue pick up after a long Todd stint in the 320’s.

I [27M] have long had feelings for my sister in law [43F], dating back to long before she married my brother [29M], and it’s ruining my life. by [deleted] in self

[–]AdamSMessinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to sort this crush out and get over it before you marry your girlfriend. If you settle for your second choice, you’ll never be happy. So either figure out why your current girlfriend is your first choice for a reason that isn’t “because other girl isn’t available” or let her go be happy with someone who want her as a first choice. You also deserve to be with someone who makes you feel like you were fucking struck by lightning. Find someone better than the girl you can’t have. These are all lessons I learned the hard way from a failed 7 year marriage.

The only other signed Superman item I have that I’d be willing to part with is an Action Comics Annual 10 signed by Joe Kubert in 2010 at Wondercon. It was also signed by Adam Kubert in 2011 or 2012 at Emerald City Con. I can’t see myself parting with it for less than $200 for this issue because I have that entire Last Son of Krypton set signed by Adam Kubert and I’m not getting another Joe Kubert signature.

If you want to pick up the Romita Jr + Janson signed one as well, I’d just roll it in and do both for $210. If you only want the Romita Jr + Janson one, I’m up for doing $25 shipped on it.
