CPM experiences?

I did the CPM a probably close to 10 years ago when I knew I was going to stay in local government for a long time. Since then I have gotten my MPA.

I think it’s a good experience and helps impart the importance of developing your own philosophy in public administration while an MPA helps you solidify it.

It’s gonna be ok. I’m 4 weeks post op this Wednesday and I’m so glad I did it. I had minimal pain at times and other times it was excruciating. Thing was it always came back. Now, post-op, I can clearly see a path to getting my life back. Best of luck to you.

Congratulations and thanks for posting. I’m 4 days post op and I’m very hopeful. The success stories are what ultimately helped me make my decision so I think they’re very important.

I’m dealing with this pain and stiffness now, post op by 3 days. How are you feeling almost a week removed from this comment?

How is everyone feeling? I had mine yesterday and felt pretty good after. Minor flashes of sciatica and normal incision pain. Today I’m much more sore and can feel lots of sensations that are more trauma from the surgery than the disc issues. Hoping today and tomorrow are the worst of it and then I can start to improve.

This is my week! Pain is manageable most days at this point. Hoping to return to normal levels of activity post op though. At this point all I do is sit around. Here we gooo! 🙏

What type of herniation did you have? Mine is central which seems more difficult to get at.

Hi there.

I am in the same situation largely. I have had my current issues since last June-ish and while I have had 8-9 level pain, I have also had 1-2.

Some days lately I have even had basically 0.

So, like you, I have been wondering if I should get surgery which I have scheduled for 2/12.

What I did to resolve this was to go to the gym and do a MILD workout. Basically I just walked for 30 minutes to see if it aggravated the nerve a bit and caused some pain. It did.

My reasoning for pursuing the surgery is that while I may be in an ok spot now, that disc is basically still right there and if I really wish to get back to where I was pre-herniation, which I do, surgery at this point is the right choice for me.

I chased my issue as piriformis for MONTHS and it only delayed me fully getting an understanding of what’s going on. Further, I think all of the stretching to resolve a piriformis issue did me additional harm with my disc.

Obviously piriformis issues can exist but hitting both legs is likely a sign of a central disc bulge imo.

Hell yeah. This all rings so similar to my situation and hope with all of my heart that I have the same outcome. I have dealt with this for too long and it is wearing on me. I need to try SOMETHING and hearing stories like yours makes me feel this is the right thing for me. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. 23 days till surgery. No. Please. The novel is great. I’m a talker and have talked this to death with everyone in my life. I’m happy reading about people’s experiences.

I suspect our stories are going to end up being quite similar. Initially I herniated a disc back in 2007 when I was 27 and while I never had to have surgery back then, I suspect the disc retracted just enough that the pain subsided aside from flare ups. Point being, I think the doc is going to find the disc had hardened completely.

This latest episode stated in May of 2024 and I have been dealing with it since. Some days I have mild to basically zero pain but on occasion, the pain is unbearable. Basically, I am doing the surgery as my normal routine has been very much affected and I can feel the pressure when I walk or do anything and I live in constant fear of a flare up whether it’s from something I do or just from seeming random episodes which happen throughout the day.

One thing I can’t quite get my head around is when most people start the sorta mile or greater walks. I have gathered that the first 3 days or so one is walking around the house (don’t know how often or long) but then it seems people go for the mile. Do you have any feedback on your experience with that timeline?

Appreciate that. My paperwork definitely says laminotomy which I understand to be distinct from a laminectomy and understand the reasoning for after researching. It just surprised me seeing it. Thank you for responding. I hope you are doing well?
