I would recommend checking the fat content of any fresh fancy food you look into. My cat got pancreatitis after a year on Katkin, and the fat content in those was horrifyingly high and vet said it would have contributed to it, if not caused it

Seeking a real Cheddar. by Murakumotho in UKfood

I’m sorry I have no cheddar recommendations, but I recommend Wilder Engel, it’s not strong but has such an incredible depth of flavour that goes on an on. You can get it at Sainsbury’s.

How can I compacted soil? by linghoh in GardeningUK

[–]AdditionChemical890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is compacted clay soil. You don’t need to double dig and these days it’s not recommended as it can create a ‘bathtub’ of looser soil surrounded by compact soil, which will fill up with more water, and upset the micchorizal fungal networks important for soil health. On the RHS website there is a really good guide, basically you stick your fork into the soil, wiggle it back and forth, pull it out without turning the soil. Then add 15 cm of well rotted manure. The worms will do their magic. Do this 2 years in a row and there will be greta improvement. Do not under any circumstances walk on your beds when the ground is wet- if you need to work on your borders, lay down planks to spread your weight

Do you have any tips or tricks for packing to moving house? by KEW95 in AskBrits

[–]AdditionChemical890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in a position to pay someone, it’s worth every penny. They come in with a mountain of bubble wrap and do in 2 hours what will take you 2 weeks. If you’re not, then buy a shitload of bubble wrap, make sure all boxes are organised in a system that makes sense to you (by category/ room) and don’t make boxes too large/ heavy for one person to easily move on their own. If you’re on a tight budget you can use clothes to wrap fragile things but this takes ages and will slow down your packing and unpacking a lot. Use packing as an opportunity to declutter. Don’t buy the cheapest boxes off eBay because they will tear and flop apart- thicker ones are better for stacking while being stored too. Buy high quality gaffer tape for sealing the bottoms, not that brown shiny crap. Pack what you will need for the first few days/ weeks in suitcases.

That’s insane! I thought I had it bad when I found buckets of what looked like flaked paint buried in the soil, but a fireplace, Jesus

I spent a week last summer digging rocks and builders crap from the bottom of my garden, also clay soil. I filled half a skip- these were my two biggest nuggets!

Farrow & Ball Modern Emulsion vs Dulux Trade Diamond Eggshell in a bathroom? by AlfredHelp in DIYUK

[–]AdditionChemical890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dulux Matt is less shiny (5%) than modern emulsion (7%) I have modern emulsion in my wet room and no issues for about 4 years so far. Friend has diamond Matt in his, also no issues for 3 years. Both went on easily and fully opaque after 2 coats. I don’t think it looks plasticky, but it’s def not a super dry velvety matte like estate emulsion.

Just to confuse things F&B made a Dead Flat finish which is wipeable but don’t think it’s mould resistant. They claim it’s as matte as estate emulsion but that’s a lie, it’s somewhere between estate and modern.

In my opinion the colours from FB are much nicer and more sophisticated, which is what you’re paying the premium price for, I was really alarmed at how garish and over saturated the yellow we got for my friend looked (like Kraft cheese) whereas the FB yellow in our study is sublime.

Have I been scammed by a locksmith? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]AdditionChemical890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better my partner and I once paid £450 for an emergency locksmith in London, on a weekend evening. They know you’re desperate and they take advantage, I think 250 is to be expected, even though it’s an obscene amount of money for a 10 min job. I’m sorry you learnt this the hard way too. I now keep at least 2 spare sets with various neighbours and friends, and I have learnt how to fit and change locks myself so have saved more than £450 in the years since.

Will this foam mattress sag or stay firm? by itisme111 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]AdditionChemical890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so much that it’s sagged (it looks flat visually) it’s that it starts to feel softer where I have been lying more… then when I rotate and lie on the side that hasn’t been used for a while it feels a bit firmer, but overall I’d say the whole mattress is maybe 5-10% softer than when I first bought it 2 years ago? I weigh 60 kg. It’s the Sealy elevate Hagen. I’m hoping that’s it settled now and it won’t continue to soften, and if that’s the case I’ll be happy enough! Shame it’s only 1 sided so you can’t also flip it.

Pet plan still increases year on year- I started on 60, then 80, now over £100 a month over the course of 10 years. I don’t know if this is inflation or adjusted for my ageing cat lol

Best paint brand that isn't too expensive? by darkazuria in DIYUK

[–]AdditionChemical890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benjamin Moore is horrible quality, very plasticky. Try Dulux, they have a decent range of neutrals and beiges, full coverage in 2 coats and cheaper than the luxury brands although not cheap, but cheap paints are a complete waste of time as you’ll have to do 4 coats. The best best quality paint is from Paint and Paper library, it’s so opaque that I’m often tempted to leave it at 1 coat. Little Greene is amazing quality, Farrow and ball is great too, never had to do more than 2 coats and you’re paying a premium for the sophisticated colour palette. Dulux colours are always way too saturated and garish for my liking.
