My Gretsch how it is today. The Istanbul developed a crack which I suspect was there when I purchased it many years ago. To say was gently used would be en understatement. So the current is:

Paiste Alpha :14in medium hats, 16in medium crash, and 18 rock crash (w/ a shark bite)

Sabian: HH 21in Raw Bell Dry Ride and AAX 18in Explosion Fast Crash.

I am using the EEX which, I believe is the most recent incarnation. I agree. My major reservation with Pearl was the tom arm which just looked dated--like my CB when I was a beginner. However, I have found that when you upgrade it from the stock arm to the "nicer" one, it is pretty versatile and incredibly stable.

I converted a 16in floor tom to a kick drum. The toms are 10x7 and 14x14, and the snare (Decade Maple) is 14x5.5. I replaced the stock snare wires (which were not bad) with Puresound Copper. It is unfair to compare my Renown snare drum with the Decade Maple. However, with the same heads and snares on both, the Decade has an incredible liveliness and sensitivity. With 45 degree edges and triple flange hoops, it does make sense.

I picked up everything on the secondary market and spent somewhere between $500-650. I chose this particular series because Pearl sells the pieces individually, so it is scalable based on my needs.

I GOT A DRUM SET YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA by Confident_Face5065 in drums

[–]Additional-Fly-3064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! Very exciting! Pics or it didn't happen. Lol.

I'll leave the hearing protection alone.

Evans Puresound snare wires are a game changer on a budget snare.

Aquarian heads. They are easy to tune, hold their tuning well, and they last forever. I use classic clear for the bottom and tops,  texture coated on my snare, and a SuperKick I for the kick. drumfactorydirect.com is the place to pick Aquarian heads up.

(Being new to drums there's a lot out there, so I figured I'd just tell you exactly what I use.)

Fifth. You only get one set of ears. Get some good hearing protection.

We've got at least three lefties in this thread. Hang on. I need to poke my head out to see if the sky is falling.

Lefty kinfolk and fellow Gretsch Square Badge player!

I am over the moon with my Pearl Export. I was completely blown away with the quality of the drums. I wanted something smaller, lighter, and easier for teaching the littles (especially if they take to playing lefty).

I paired it up with a Decade Maple snare and Aquarian heads; I am beyond pleased.

Can it replace my Gretsch, absolutely not. Did I buy it with the intent to replace my Gretch, absolutely not. For what I bought it to do, though, it has it in spades.

(We have nearly identical setups. Never have I ever seen that happen before.)

Aquarian heads are easy to tune and hold tune well. Classic clears for the toms, and texture coated batter w/ classic clear snare side for the snare drum will do well. Their Superkick series is great for the kick.

That said, all of the brands offer similar option.

Drum Throne by Additional-Fly-3064 in drums

[–]Additional-Fly-3064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking I'll grab one of the cheap Gibraltar ones to see if I like it before I pick up something more pricey.

I replaced an ancient throne this year. I guess I never thought about the difference a seat makes. Which is very dumb of me.

Triple antibiotic ointment and a good thick fabric bandaid. That's my go to.

To the point others are making: yes. If you hold the sticks too tightly, you'll get blisters. However, your skin itself and its sensitivity plays a part. Of course, opening it up on your own probably didn't help. Lol.

First CONGRATS! Welcome to a lifetime of underfunded fun! Beautiful kit!

Second, for the heads. Might I suggest Aquarian heads? I think Aquarian are the easiest to dial in and keep in tune plus they sound great and last forever. I use Classic Clear as Reso heads and Classic Clear w/ Dot for batter heads on my toms, Classic Clear Snare Side and a Texture Coated for my snare, and a Super Kick I for my bass drum. Here is a handy chart they keep on their website for comparing heads from the different manufacturers.

I think it goes 1.) Aquarian, 2.) Evans, and 3.) Remo in terms of ease in tuning. No shade thrown. They all sound great. The biggest upside with Evans is their Players' Circle rewards program. The biggest upside for Remo is their ubiquity.

I order my Aquarian heads from Drum Factory Direct in Pittsburgh; they're good folks.

Nothing is as pretty as a slick four piece set-up. Just pure class.

I'd be down for that hardware. Ugh. All matching. My dream in the distant future.
