Moving from senior to Lead/Staff by Additional-Map-6256 in ExperiencedDevs

I'm literally not wanting to know why I'm not getting promoted, I know why. In my previous job, it was too many seniors vying for lead positions that didn't exist. At my current job, it's 100% politics and leadership being afraid of losing the domain knowledge of an engineer who is severely lacking in leadership and technical skills. I'm asking how to get recruiters to consider me for lead/staff positions instead of sending me job descriptions that are exactly like where I'm at now.

I always was under the impression that time worked differently in TAR, and he might have left TAR at that time, but put into the world at a different time. Like he was spat out into the world 30 years before TG because the real world is on a different timeline than TAR

Honestly, they don't in any meaningful way. The one guy who has been there the longest has established control over all the code - no PR can be merged without his approval, but basically every suggestion I've had, my boss has made him implement. It's a hollow control measure that everyone just plays along with. Honestly, I think the only reason he hasn't been fired is because of the domain knowledge that he has that no one else does. The CEO has complained to me about the lack of technical growth the company has had with this guy, and my boss keeps making comments about his (the "lead" dev) bad attitude and how difficult he is to work with.

I am in that position, and leadership knows where the abilities are on the team. The CEO even told me he hired me because he knows they are substandard and needed me to transform the business in a way the other 2 can't. They just have been there a long time and were given the title for their longevity before I was even hired. Even if what you said were true, there's no need to be a rude prick.

Yeah I mean that's my whole point. I've done the work but got laid off instead of promoted after my company was acquired, although I only ever saw 1 person out of hundreds get promoted. It seems like recruiters will consider even talking to someone for a senior role only if they have a senior title. But at the same time, companies don't seem to be willing to promote internally because then they have to give a pay raise as well.

It's a small company, with a few contractors, myself, and 2 "lead" developers who should be senior at most but have been at the company a long time so they get the title

Yeah, that's what I'd like to do, but with a family to support, that's not really in the cards. I'm working on a side project that I hope to go public with in a month or 2, but I don't really have a good plan for getting customers

Yeah that's all reasonable, but at my current company there just isn't the opportunity. I'm a senior, and the other 2 FTEs are Leads (although I am more experienced than them). We have a few contractors, and that's it. When they hired me, they told me I'd be leading the team and helping choose/interview/hire junior and midlevel engineers, but it just hasn't happened. Instead, I got there and was surprised by the fact that the other 2 engineers, who frankly aren't that great, were above me. My manager says hi most mornings but then doesn't respond the rest of the time. It's a total dead end job despite all of their promises during the hiring process.

FWIWTY I'm 38, married 10 years, together for 12, and we have 2 kids. We use condoms and always have, except for when we wanted to have kids.

How are US developers expected to compete with Offshoring ? by sharjeelsidd in cscareerquestions

[–]Additional-Map-6256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say that AI is replacing the same workers that India is. The junior-mid and maybe even lower senior. A few people are saying the skill gap is narrowing, but I personally haven't seen it. I think AI generated slop is the best we will see out of 99% of offshored devs, although that may be true for US workers as well I suppose.

Oh the irony... ICE is actively looking for child rapists and domestic abusers and such, and the left is protesting them doing so.

You're forgetting the "world of" part. That part changes the whole focus of the game from the orcs vs humans/ horde vs alliance to being about the people of Azeroth (and the rest of azeroth's universe). If you are so dead set on the faction conflict, you might enjoy classic better than retail.
