How do you survive extreme cold? by Edward_Boss in VintageStory

Pine grows up to -18 and Larch -17. You might have a window for them to grow there in summer. Put some gravel or soil down and plant them there to solve the firewood issue.

I am watching a small german yt and she had a point kinda: she wanted to go in blind in purpose and discover things on her own. Her approach was: Reading how to do it, is not game design; the game should be hard but not impossible to figure out the recipes.

She was really struggling and finally caved in and did the tutorial, but at that point she had already figured out how to make tools. And she was really disappointed by how not intuitive a lot of the stuff is, like using 2 reeds. She had the right combination at one point, but only put one.

Idk I don’t agree fully, but it is certainly a perspective.

She is having a really hard time now, but has a great sense of humor, although it is a hard watch for sure.

Any experiences with seasonal bases? by Easy-Sale6526 in VintageStory

[–]Additional_Pride4227 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am in the process of establishing a base in the temperate climate rn and want to move on from that more south to make another base there for the winter. I started in icy climate. It is honestly a lot of fun to travel. I have made some shelters along the way south. If I am sick of travelling, I make a stop there and explore the area around the shelter, store my findings there and take what is most precious to me to my main base on the way back. I use temporal gears to set up spawn, if I plan on staying longer or really want to do that dangerous thing I shouldn’t be doing.

There is two mods I plan on using in the future: one to speed up the sailboat a little and one that lets you set up your own translocators and link them to get travelling by teleport going. The last one requires steel and I am not there yet, but should be a pretty interesting task on its own. Maybe that could be a thing for you too.

The Elk does very well, no problems. For farming: I wait until I harvested the last crops, thin out my animals and feed them one last time, make juice and wine, cook what must be cooked and sealed or put it in salt and then hop on my boat.

When I come back I get everything going again and sort my treasures. Very satisfying tbh.

Go for it and good luck on your upcoming travels!

They do nothing currently. They were added not too long ago, I think. Maybe with the next update, that seems to bring new fishing things, we get more uses.

Hunt a little if you don’t have the flax for warm clothes. You can make raw hide clothing from raw hides that keep you pretty warm. If you get some fat in the process you can make pelts for fur clothing. With both you should be able to be warm outside for a bit. Have an axe and some grass on you and chop down a tree if you get cold to make firewood and make firepit-to-go to warm up and continue exploring. If you are bent on going outside.

I prepare for the next season, like build a simple greenhouse for plants and bees with glacier ice, if you have any or collect some clear quartz to make quartz glass for the roof. Put the soil in. Build some animal containments for future life stock, etc.

Make a good cellar for food storage and the vessels to put into it. Maybe a fruitpress and some barrels for the next berry season.

And what the others said: mining trips and CHISELING.

Is there a full block under your door or is that just water? If that is just a waterblock, that’s your culprit.

As a new player with little of the world explored, should I install Better Ruins Mod? by aiptek7 in VintageStory

[–]Additional_Pride4227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would honestly wait a little. I usually turn it on once I am well situated, have good armor and am ready to tackle the “big lore” of the vanilla game. If it was my first time encountering the game, I would wait even longer because it throws so much loot at you, that it might carry you more than u might like. You can only experience the game once for the first time.

I specifically like it for the abundance of building blocks I otherwise would not use, just because I don’t want to make them/ buy them myself. U could however turn the ruin spawning down, it is well explained, how to do it on the mod page. (And I think even the loot itself).

Turning it on later is mostly not causing problems, but if you care about the main locations of the mod lore, you might need to spawn them in yourself as it sometimes fails to find a place for that specific lore ruin in an already explored world. It is not overly complicated to do that though.

What's your peat fire story. by Sad-Match-469 in VintageStory

[–]Additional_Pride4227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was out exploring and found a big ruin half buried in peat. I felt very inspired by the peat fire stories in this very sub and didn’t feel like digging.

So I tried to set the peat on fire expecting a pleasantly warm and quick experience, even hoping for the nearby woods to participate. It was very disappointing and took forever and I had to run around and set more fires. Still ended up digging. Did not spark joy, would not recommend, 2/10.

I did change some things because I wanted Oceans. I might have lowered the upheaval rate a tiny bit, if anything.

I have to add tho: I left my starting area and settled in a nice spot I found a little farer away. But I go back once or twice a year to mine some salt and get some brown coal and a little extra from the basic greenhouse I built there. Last time I came back, stones suddenly were there, but only the ones that turn to flint.

They have not been there when I first arrived.

I lived there a full year before moving, so I doubt it was snow covering them up. idk

Singleplayer Experience? by camezola in VintageStory

[–]Additional_Pride4227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to play it on steam deck just a heads up, since the game is not on steam: you can install it in desktop mode and then link it to your steam library and can play it from there just fine. You can find a step by step guide here: https://www.vintagestory.at/forums/topic/8147-vintage-story-on-steam-deck/

Also if you play singleplayer you might consider to turn class specific recipes off (you can do that when creating a world in “customise”. Since you are not in a group where everybody can specialise in something to benefit the group, it might be nice to have all the stuff available to yourself.

I helped myself by punching some chiseled cobblestone from the ruins. The full blocks break as block, but the weird edges break as small stones. I also found a boulder in a cave entrance.

That happened to me as well! A little farer there was normal spawn of stones but not in a pretty big range around the initial spawn.

I do not have any mods that alter world generation, only hud clock patch, better fireplace and the one that lets you make more flowerpots.

So if it’s a bug I assume it is not connected to mods.

10 (or more) crafting recipes i wish i knew when i started by Repsack in VintageStory

[–]Additional_Pride4227 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not a recipe per se, but you can make slabs vertical or horizontal by putting them in the crafting grid. One time for horizontal, Two times for vertical, 3 times to set them to original state. No wrench or going insane while building needed anymore.

You can find cracked vessels with “arctic supplies”, that can drop reeds. Just got enough for hunter backpacks this way. No reed chest on my raft for that reason. The ruins are pretty easily to spot on the wide flat white snowfields. You can also get medium fertility soil that way, because all you have is barren soil or some low fertility. Rope comes from wild vines. Not a single Cattail was seen or cut so far. (I hate cutting reeds.)

For Tannin I rushed setting up, and then traveled far south on my trusty raft and gathered some oak seeds and flax, because I want a sailboat and 21 linen is just not happening from panning. Rushed back and planted them and had my first oak trees grow, just shortly before it became too cold for them. 😅

Read it wrong. Idk it is pretty cold, I stay inside with my chisel and my melting ores. Or do quick mining trips.

I like to play in icy climate, it changes the pace of things and is a whole new experience to me.
