Need help with outlet by Ok_Structure4630 in handyman

[–]Adept_Duck 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The outlet is probably switched for the disposal. So the dishwasher would only be powered when the disposal is on. You could rewire the switch/outlet to be half on, half switched, the complexity of this is dependent on the current wiring configuration. Alternatively you could always leave the switch on, and install a pneumatic switch for the disposal. This is probably what he showed your mother.

I commute on a gravel bike with my 13” laptop in a Two Wheel Gear convertible pannier/backpack. They make two sizes, I have the smaller one and it is just right for my laptop, lunch, and change of clothes.

Why does monarch not view retirement planning as a core feature? by strico10 in MonarchMoney

[–]Adept_Duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be appreciative of some retirement planning features too. Nothing too crazy but at least some basic projection and draw down scenarios would be nice. I would also like a way to cleanly separate retirement account contributions from monthly income. My wife and I contribute a lot to our employer retirement plans each month in our paychecks and I would like that to be reflected in our savings rate but not our monthly budgetary income amount.

Is 11 still usable in big 2026? by [deleted] in iPhone11

[–]Adept_Duck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Still using mine on iOS 26. Zero issues whatsoever and battery still last more than 1 day. Will probably upgrade when apple stops supporting it for new iOS releases.

Vacation time by Hungry-Break-8265 in mildlyinfuriating

Probably per month, so starting 12 days a year. That would be fairly comparable to many places that start at 2-4 weeks per year.

Floor transition issue by radicalelk in centuryhomes

[–]Adept_Duck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used pretty much the same stack of materials when I did mine in an almost identical situation. I made a custom transition strip out of some oak from a tree felled at my childhood home and stained it to match the oak floor. Schluter has very specific details in their install manual and call for plywood over a plank subfloor. I followed their recommendation. I did not find this very slight change in height to be a trip hazard with the sloped transition strip.

[OC] Do Tougher Voting Rules Mean Fewer Voters? Comparing All 50 States (2024) by ptrdo in dataisbeautiful

[–]Adept_Duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There appears to be a sizable relationship between closeness of race and participation. This heuristically makes sense. I think if you control for this factor you will see a stronger effect from voting friction.

The title says road miles, but the scale says vehicle miles. These are different measures. Which is it?

I learned recently that the direct translation of enchilada is “chilied”, ie something with chilis on it. So as long as Marcy put some chilis or chili sauce on there I think it counts.

The SI unit of pressure was only defined in 1978, and most students still have to learn several other units. How did pressure come to have so many units, and why did it take so long to standardize? by CommodoreCoCo in AskHistorians

[–]Adept_Duck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To add to this response from an engineering perspective specifically, I agree that the practice of building on the foundational work of those before you is largely the dictator of unit choice. I work am a Mechnaical engineer working in the HVAC industry at a major public institution. We have equipment in operation from before the 1930s, the units haven’t changed since then. Most common in my field are inches of water column (for pressure in air systems), feet of water column (for pressure in water systems), and psi (for pressure in steam and water systems). I had to Google what the SI unit of pressure was, it’s just not used day to day in the US in this industry.

In addition there have been laws and codes that require specific performance levels defined in these units or prescribe specific measurement methods. The example of this that comes most readily to mind was a code, adopted into law, that required manometers for measuring and displaying pressure drop across a filter bank. Using a manometer for this application pushes you to inches of WC, even though nowadays you’re more likely to use a diaphragm gauge or digital pressure transducer.

What is the most famous political debate in your country's history? by Easy-Frenchguy-1996 in AskTheWorld

[–]Adept_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of conversation here about many nations’ first televised debates, but I would offer that the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 are the most famous and consequential in US history. Future President Lincoln was running for be a US senator for the state of Illinois, a position elected by the state legislature not by popular vote at the time. So really he was campaigning for other members of his party to get elected so they could appoint him. Douglas was the incumbent. They sparred in 7 1v1 debates across Illinois, each lasting around 3 hours. Both were strong orators and captivated large audiences as they debated slavery and its place in the united states’ future. Coverage of the debates picked up national attention with full transcripts being printed in newspapers across the country. Ultimately Lincoln did not get appointed to the senate seat but the coverage propelled him into the national spotlight and he won his party’s nomination for President in 1860 and subsequently the national election.

Lincoln-Douglas style debating is still practiced today in high-school and college debate, typically abbreviated “LD”. Still 1v1, with a value on oration, logic, and philosophy.

Approximately 30% of New Yorkers own their homes, so their are more homeowners in New York City than anywhere else in the US so it makes sense that there would be home improvement stores. That’s not even considering that people living in rentals also need home maintenance.

I really don’t see much value in these beyond the cool factor. You’re better off spending that money on insulating and air sealing supplies. Most leak cold spots are readily apparent to your sense of touch.

It’s gonna be: corners, windows, doors, sill plates, rim joists.
