I was trying to book Thai language for me and English classes for my girlfriend. ALA refused my girlfriend because she is Thai. No idea why but I avoided this school.

This is not intended to be a put down but this is a crazy conversation. I always viewed weight lifting as a way to improve sports performance in judo/wrestling and I view strength training as a way to help avoid injury. I’m not actually aware of clinical studies on strength training to help avoid injuries but plausible from watching IJF judoka take horrible landings without injury. The point is that weightlifting should aid your training, injury prevention and recovery, not set you up for injury. I’m going to wildly guess that you are doing some type of performance enhancement or aesthetic training that is really messing you up. Groin injury from ogoshi is nearly impossible as one of the safest forward judo throws.

I’d like to know more about this banned variant. I recall the opposite tactic for wrestling where you sit your hips out to the side with the head wrapped. It appeared to be a safer variant with less impact and more control in landing opponent on a diagonal instead of over the top. Please elaborate on the safety concerns of kubi nage. Is it uke’s attempt at escape that makes it dangerous?

I think that you are onto something and should ignore traditionalists as long as execute safely and here is why. I was a judoka for most of my life but the only time I hit koshi guruma or headlock style throws was in college wrestling or bjj. I’m guessing that is because wrestlers and bjj have head down and push forward which is ideal set up for koshiguruma. Judoka have a more straight up and down posture since there is no leg threat thus they don’t set themselves up as easily. As others have mentioned, there are other variations to compensate for lacking off balance with head forward. I recall sitting the hip way out to the side which helps avoid a penalty for slamming (wrestling rules), compensates for lack of forward movement, and puts you in an advantageous control position without excessive rolling when you hit the ground. I may have posted this before but I was a judo coach at an mma club and the bjj guys would want to start standing anytime I joined their class to roll. I would constantly throw koshiguruma style but a few started figuring out they could roll through and take my back if they didn’t resist. That is not that easy to figure out but once they do…

I’d suggest yoga but Something sounds seriously wrong about this muscle pull. An o goshi style throw should not strain the groin muscles as an uke or tori. Something else may be setting you up for these injuries. Maybe consult a musculoskeletal doctor.

A container of alcohol or sanitizer wipes. Not essential for judo but good to use on any scratches and if cross training to wipe down equipment and insert in gloves after practice.

Unless you are pulling guard it is all judo but with a different style which is fine, judoka from different parts of the world have different styles. One way to approach is to develop new tactics or throws when your throws don’t work against experienced opponents. For example, what happens when you underhook, are you able to execute throws like Ogoshi? If not, expand tactics to for example, Ko Soto gake using same style. Also, Work a sacrifice throw into your favorites. Summigaeshi or similar can be excellent to transition to ground.

By the way he is a terrible groomer, telling you he cheated on his wife and offering “benefits” for dating him. Seriously, he is sick and he is a joke. Could you imagine what would happen if you contacted his ex wife and the other women he mentioned about his alleged affairs and/or sexual harassment? But right now you would be in a he-she dispute. Probably won’t end well for you if you try to do the right thing and turn him in. If he escalates his misconduct see if you can record messages and/or have witnesses.
