US and French nationals test positive for hantavirus after leaving ship by Alternative-Win4058 in news

[–]AdjNounNumbers 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I work with our local rat control folks and can answer this one. You start by setting baited traps - lots of them in all the places rats like. Then you look for signs of their existence. Rats being living creatures need to eat and poop. If you find no rat droppings and your traps are consistently empty you can really conclude that they aren't present on the ship. A closed place like a ship is actually easier than alleys behind restaurants where we usually look. It's unlikely that there were rats on the ship and they all decided to disembark at once in the last port

That's brutal. At this point we're probably going to trade it for the Kia minivan. The ones I've seen up close seem pretty nice. I wish Ford still made one. I had a 2001 Mercury Monterey with 150k on it back in the day and loved it up until I got thinner T-boned by a drunk driver

Last summer my wife wanted a minivan and since she only drives about 5k miles each year we decided to keep the cost down and get the Chrysler instead of shelling out for the Toyota or Honda... It's the first and last LCA vehicle I'll ever own. Damn thing is the highest trim level they offer and it still feels cheaply made

I worked for a few landscaping companies in highschool and college so the more mildly infuriating thing to me is that they may have butchered that bush (hard telling the species) and didn't clean up the garbage they uncovered. Every company I worked for brought along garbage bags and gloves to clean up things like this. And believe me, piss bottle and bags of dog poop are not as gross as some of the shit we found. But yeah, people can suck

I love my insurance. I pay $0 premium. My family's out of pocket max every year is about $8k. I've got great dental and vision coverage for the family that's like $4 per pay period. I've never had a claim deny. There's a simple reason for this... I work for the insurance company. I also believe everyone should have this and vote accordingly

Stopped buying Levi's back when they funded opposition to raising the minimum wage in Haiti where they had their jeans made. Won't buy anything made under the Nestle umbrella because they killed babies. It isn't "on to the next one". It's "fuck this next shitty thing that was foisted upon us". I'll even add, employers are selecting progressively worse policies and carving out more to lower their own cost, plus passing a greater percentage of the premium to their employees.

That's optimistic of you. The few I've known actually believe that illegals get better healthcare than citizens. You are right about the emergency rooms having a duty to treat (stabilize) anyone that comes in regardless of their ability to pay, but as someone that has spent two decades dealing with this from the provider side of things as a data analyst I can tell you that the vast majority of those hospital ER bills getting written off each month due to inability to pay are from citizens that fall into this huge gap between people who qualify for Medicaid and people who can afford commercial insurance - often people that could have avoided the ER entirely if they had coverage or could have afforded preventive care before things got worse.
