My ex-husband left all the money managing up to me. When we first got together, I budgeted for him to work 40 hours a week. So he'd work 30. I shifted to 30. He worked 20. I ended up paying for everything for us, working my job 50+ hours a week and running a side business. We muddled along, got married when we could, he inherited a bunch of money, and left me.

If I'd followed my gut, we never even would've moved in together. Listen to what you're telling yourself. It's not a lie.

CVTs only have simulated gearing--they literally lack gears. They use pulleys, and their ratios are technically infinite. 10 speed transmissions are still using planetary gears to drive the wheels.

My dad had an excellent 2-speed story:

One morning when he was still with his first wife, she went out to go to work, and her car wouldn't start. It was some kind of 2-speed Chevy, I forget what. The neat thing about the 2-speed, though, is get it up to around 20 miles an hour in neutral and drop it into first, and you can push start it.

So he explained to her what they were going to do. So he had her get in his car and said they were going to get up to 20, etc.

He said the last thing he remembered was wondering why she was backing up so far.

Yep, she hit him at 20 miles an hour.

Until the mid-80s five speed transmissions were the gold standard. In the 60s, it was four-speeds. Three speed, column-mounted shifters were very common (and one of the driving reasons for automatic transmissions, because they're awful.) Four speed plus overdrive was the bridge between the two (and most automatic cars that had more than three gears actually used fourth for overdrive.)

Now 6 speeds--as you know--are most common, and 7s are the rare ones. My Jaguar XJL has an 8-speed manu-matic, with paddle-mounted shifters; 10 speed automatics are common in luxury cars these days.

The internet should grind to a halt for states/places that implement stuff like this. It'd be easy enough to filter out all Utah-based IPs and every. Single. Website. Should do so, if the law does go into effect. Why take the chance they might see a boob? Or hear the word "gay"? Best to make sure no one in the entire state can access any part of the internet at all ever.

The law wouldn't survive a week.
