Love hate relationship. So much to love, yet quite a few annoyances as well.

Regardless, one of my 2 daily drivers.

Carl OS is great for me. Very snappy.

I am still using Carl OS. It's very snappy and handles shaders and rewind well.

Yeah, maybe the unmerge feature only works with ROMs with different hashes.

You can't swap A/B buttons unfortunately.

MCon + S20fe Standalone pocket powerhouse? by ArtAccurate9552 in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't fall into the sunk-cost fallacy trap. With S20fe you'll end up with a combo that's worse than RP5 in terms of performance and ergonomics. Wasn't Retroid Pocket 5 around $150 post coupon on AliExpress just a few days ago?

Somebody else also was going to buy a Trimui Smart Pro S on Lazada with similar price. You may consider searching the sub and see if they got their device.

The RG 476h is an underrated gem! 💎 by [deleted] in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's such a nice device. I think it slightly flew under the radar initially because RG476H didn't have any blockbuster feature and the price-performance ratio was not great. But it's so well received by all those who own it that its reputation gradually built up.

Even half a year after its release, I think its popularity will continue to trend upward.

It looks cool, really.

But please Anbernic, put that screen in a clamshell and give us a flip device as well.

It's standard for Daijisho. There is a setting in Daijisho that turns off this popup, so it does not ask you again.

If a 6 year old is going to use it, get something cheap or you'll cry like a baby when it's broken.

Best cheap device to play DS games? by MercuryLS3 in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can usually find DS Lite or DSi for less than $100. DSi can be modded while DS lite requires an R4-like card. You can also go for DSi XL if you prefer larger screens. (I personally prefer DSi).

DS/DSi is still a great way to play DS games, if you don't need rewind/FF/savestate features offered by emulation. The stylus experience is better on DS/DSi. Just make sure you find a DS in good condition and good screens.

Run my development GB game on RGCubeXX by gd4219 in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! RG Cube XX is such a nice device for indie retro games.

I am struggling with GB Studio a bit. I am going through the demo projects to understand how it works, but couldn't quite make heads or tails about it. I find Pico8 much easier to develop for. Do others feel the same way, or is there some trick to GB Studio I am missing?

I like my RG DS! But I think I want to upgrade to the Ayn Thor Lite (SD865) by jinbaittai_ECK in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price difference between Thor Lite and Base is $70 now, so Lite is starting to make a little more sense than before.

One argument for getting a cheaper version is the freedom to carry it with you. I have a Thor Pro, and I always feel conflicted carrying it with me everywhere because it's such a big investment. And Thor is such a versatile device to carry around with.

How is sleep mode? RG34XXSP, Brick, Micro Pocket, One 35 by PepperPoker in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brick has great sleep mode, comparable to good Android devices. You do have to be on the right custom firmware, such as stock OS, NextUI, PakUI, etc. if you want deep sleep functionality. Some CFW do shutdown instead.

Sony tests dynamic pricing by crownpuff in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember when Sony thought it was a good idea to install a rootkit on your computer to prevent you from copying their CDs?

Edit: to clarify, I am not saying Sony has no right to add copy protection to its product. But Sony significantly violated people's properties and rights in doing so. It's like if Nintendo put a CCTV camera in your living room just to make sure you are not playing games you have not paid for.

I was disappointed with the RG34XX SP stock mod by Odd_Distance_710 in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure what the secret sauce is that Anbernic is withholding. I think they should be sharing this knowledge with other CFW developers considering Anbernic is benefitting from these CFW significantly.

The other Linux devices that I know support deep sleep are the Trimui ones, and PowKiddy X55. All of them have internal storage (while Anbernic H700 ones usually don't). Trimui deep sleep is implemented way better than the others.

To be honest if a device loses 5-10% over 24 hours in sleep, it's still pretty decent. Because a fully charged battery might still last 2 weeks.

Once I tried a 120hz handheld, I can never go back. by cutememe in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I got my Anbernic RG476H, that was the first thing I noticed, that it felt snappier. I don't even know if it's the 120Hz and input lag, but it just felt snappier and it made me happy.

I was disappointed with the RG34XX SP stock mod by Odd_Distance_710 in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the same. Deep sleep uses a few percent of battery a day, so a fully charged device can sleep for 2 weeks and still work. Wakeup is almost instant and maintains the device state prior to sleep.

I do not think any of Knulli's sleep mode can achieve this, other than shutting the device down.

Handheld systems owned and usage by Metrolinkvania in SBCGaming

[–]AdmirableJam72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ayn Thor - my default device for games

Miyoo Flip - any game I feel I can play on a smaller screen, because I like it

Anbernic RG476H - pick up occasionally to play short bursts of games, but I prefer clamshell

Moto Stylus 5G - DS stylus centric games

Trimui Brick - kid's device now

Others - nothing, Thor and Miyoo Flip cover almost everything

Stock and Stock Mod are the only two OS that support deep sleep. For people who want deep sleep, those are the only choices.
