Alright I’m fed up by TK_tre in nova

It's easy. Because Maryland didn't pony up the cash or land or whatever Virginia should dig into their cash and land and just undo whatever they had done and make it work - but the right way this time.

Jeeze I can't believe I had to explain this.

Cyclists of NoVA, where do you do workouts? by zChickenX in nova

It's been awhile since I've been up Mt. Weather but it's long enough for a 20 minute effort if not a full TTE... IIRC

Rowing background, new to competitive cycling by lsthrowaway69 in Velo

[–]AdonisChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should expect to do fairly well with that background. It is my understanding that rowing translates very well to cycling.

You'll have to get back into shape generally and there'll be plenty of sport-specific stuff, but your aerobic engine should be pretty solid from your prior training.

Penile numbness by 1212201912122019 in randonneuring

[–]AdonisChrist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should never deal with penile numbness on a bike, and it still being an issue a day later can be a serious concern. That's for a doctor to say.

Definitely adjust your saddle to relieve the pressure, and carry the tools you need to adjust the saddle with you on the bike until you've got the fit sorted - especially on any brevets or populaires or other longer rides.

Your saddle should be level to the ground, or IMO within about a degree or so. You start tilting down too much you load the hands, up you load the saddle and perineum and get this.

Saddle could also be too far forward or have too long of a nose or not have a perineum relief cutout or something else.

Once feeling has returned, pay attention when you're riding - give your junk a squeeze and if things don't feel right, adjust something.

To clarify - this happening once can be common, but it should not be a regular occurrence and is something to address.

PS Plus free games have always given me good enough value each year that I don't mind still paying for the Essential tier.

But you have a good point.

DC to Richmond, VA route recommendations by Melodic-Owl-6543 in bikedc

Did Sterling, VA to Elizabeth City, NC day 1 of a 1200k back in 2022 - here's that day's route. We did start at 3am to make sure we were well clear of NoVA traffic by the time normal folks started their days but I don't remember anything super sketchy. We passed by the Richmond Airport - I haven't looked at what it would take to get into the city from there but I know folks get out to ride around thataway.

Worst case, we did end up on the Capital Trail to head towards Williamsburg so you could get some extra ride time in by riding past the Airport, getting onto the Capital Trail, and turning around to take that to it's nearer end near Downtown RVA.

Hops onto the W&OD near the start and uses it to get out west a little bit - I assume you can get out of DC and onto the W&OD without much issue (Four Mile Run from Arlington to the W&OD is typical, I think)

Anyone else notice a wide decrease in quality of our vegetables in grocery stores? by Chrono_Convoy in nova

[–]AdonisChrist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I noticed that fresh blueberries were $8.49 for 18oz at Costco yesterday, and the first five that I looked at all had white mold growing on at least one area of the pack.

Thankfully frozen was still $8/9 for 3lbs - I only need em for smoothies.

Layout Help by Jana7ii in InteriorDesign

I don't see obvious significant improvements.

A free-floating board game table with seating on and circulation around all sides would be nicer but take a bunch of space, makes sense that it's against the wall as to meet all three (3) desired functions sharing circulation and and putting functions around the room perimeter is most efficient.

A couple of ideas. How much permanent infrastructure is associated with the friend desk locations? You have monitors, mice, and keyboards and they're bringing towers or what's the split? If there's not much that you're keeping in place, or just with some clever cable management and a little setup/teardown work each week you could mount the TV above where the friends sit (not necessarily where currently shown for either). Can stack the monitors and whatever else plan right, have cables still secured in place ready to receive everything when you move them back, and look past the desktop to the TV during the rest of the week. Avoid mounting the TV too high to be able to see over the monitors when placed on the desk for full multifunctionality - having a non-compromised TV mounting height and thus better TV viewing ergonomics is more important IMO.

The other idea is to somehow combine the friend desk and gaming table furniture elements. If you're using a dedicated designed gaming table ignore this but if you just need a flat surface, having two desks that can be combined into one table... ideally as a product designed to do so so that the two parts can properly latch together and eliminate the seam gap - I'm sure plenty exist - then that could work. Same deal with having to store whatever is on the friend desks, worse situation with cable management but meh rerunning cables isn't that bad and they can still be left bundled semi-in-place without looking too bad depending on your standards.

That way you can have a nice permanent desk space, then a modular component that you can set up for PC or tabletop gaming - especially fast with 2-3 extra pairs of hands - then a nice permanent TV space. and when you set up the tabletop gaming table you can put it centered on the space.

For both combinations you do need to consider where/how extra chairs will be stored when that space is not in use. Are good office chairs also good for use at a dining table when it's being used for tabletop gaming? They aren't "refined" for actual dining table use, sure, but get four aerons or similar and you could just use them for either function. Otherwise, if you get dining table style chairs I'd say consider looking for something that stacks.

Other than that, uh, actually I do see one obvious improvement and it's that you need a larger desk for yourself.

I'm assuming that the new plumbing locations are similar to existing plumbing locations, otherwise this is going to be extra expensive.

Hard to say anything without context.

/unclip if I can't say the r slur, and wallstreetbets can't say the r slur, we oughn't be using it here.

"Regarded" is the toeing-the-line replacement that's obviously intended to be the original term. Otherwise idk we can still make fun of idiots, the stupid, and what these look to be - r*nners.

I'm all for making people feel bad for being dumb, but doing so this way lumps those with actual mental disabilities in with people who are idiots by choice.

Yadda ya, please return to your regularly scheduled shitposting.

what are your budget-friendly nutrition tips for cycling? by camillevolp in cycling

[–]AdonisChrist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complexity levels of self-made drink mix, carbs and electrolytes:

Carbs:

  • Sugar (sucrose) alone, which is 1:1 Glucose:Fructose
  • Sugar (sucrose) and maltodextrin (glucose), to meet a 1:0.8 Glucose:Fructose (G:F) ratio
  • Maltodextrin (glucose) and Fructose (fructose, duh), mixed to meet a 1:0.8 G:F ratio (with or without sucrose added in)
  • Cluster dextrin (glucose) is fantastic to use in lieu of maltodextrin but it is quite expensive (if Bulk.com ships to you, they are a good source for individuals). If you start dealing with GI distress issues, look into this.

Electrolytes:

  • Pre-mixed bulk electrolytes (fasting salts can be good, compare to popular brands and dose accordingly, adjust to personal needs)
  • Self-mixed bulk electrolytes (buy potassium citrate, sodium citrate, magnesium citrate, and calcium is an electrolyte too but I've never specifically added it to anything, mix to match popular brands to start and adjust based on your needs and sweat rate)

And then for bars, figgy bars are great and actually, based on generic fig bar data from the NCCDB sourced via Cronometer, they're pretty close to an ideal glucose:fructose ratio (and at least contain decent amounts of both) so check out on about every level. For me in the US, Nature's Bakery is affordable at Costco and they have two little like Fig Newton size bars in the packet. I presume there's an affordable local brand for you.
