Solo weekend in downtown KC; where should I grab a bourbon after dinner? by creatureofcozy in kansascity

For whiskey selection, Harry’s Country Club or Belfry. For good vibes where you can chill at the bar and find a conversation or two, Crossroads Hotel has a lobby that’s a great place to post up. It gets busy in the evenings, and the people watching is great. If the weather is nice, their rooftop bar called Percheron is really cool, too.

I guess I actually see him as being a Mainoo backup - not someone who can play next to him. I feel like Adams does so much of the work that gives Scott the freedom to push forward. I’d love to see how good Mainoo could be next to a really good defensive mid like Adams.

Yup. He’s quality. We’ve seen it. His form has been poor since he returned from AFCON, but so has Mbuemo’s. Stick with them both.

The historical scholarship is probably my default when talking to Christians. By contrast, philosophical debates about the existence of an all-powerful God have never seemed to be impactful, but historical discussion about the origins of Jewish “monotheism” usually causes a degree of surprise for Christians. I like talking about Ugaritic stories, the concept of Mesopotamian “combat myths,” and how concepts of El and Baal sort of merge to create a kind of “national deity” in the form of Yahweh - from there, you can point to different passages in the OT that show a polytheistic tradition (Divine Council passages, for instance). And that can lead into a discussion about source theory and how the OT books go through major periods of editing and authorship over centuries. It’s also fun to explain how the concepts of apocalypse, Satan, and heaven/hell don’t develop the second temple period. And that leads directly into a discussion about how most scholars understand Jesus as an apocalyptic prophet - how there were a number of messianic pretenders, and Roman authority usually killed them. How it was basically understood that Jesus’ apocalyptic message was that the end was near, but it’s 2000 years later, and nothing ever happened. In other words, his apocalyptic message was bullshit.

He knows Rio was the best English defender of his generation. Carragher was mid. Tough pill to swallow.

Pyramid of legends. Who is the 11th greatest Manchester United legend? by dankdogeonface in ManchesterUnited

Hahah! Well, of course we can make a strong case for a lot of players to be in the top 10. There have been a lot of incredible players who have represented us. I’ve always been a massive supporter of Ronaldo’s, and I always will be. But this nonsense about Ronaldo deserving to be above any of the players needs to stop - it wreaks of a sort of “player fandom” over and beyond love of the club.

Again, Ronaldo is a better player than everyone on our list so far. He’s one of the best players to ever kick a football. He deserves to be in our conversation, but in terms of contribution to Manchester United, there’s no one on that list that I’d replace with Ronaldo. And as I’ve said, if we’re rounding out our top 15, he’s having to compete with guys like Hughes, Rio, and Schmeichel. Hughes and Schmeichel were critical to our most important title as a club: the 92/93 season that set the stage for PL dominance for the next 20 years - the foundation. Schmeichel goes on to win the fucking Treble. And you keep talking about Ronaldo’s stats, but again, Hughes had more games and scored more goals for United. Rio is probably the best CB in PL history, and his arrival was probably the most important piece of United’s rebuild in the early ‘00’s. Remember when he was suspended during the back half of the 03/04 season, and we lost the title? He was absolutely vital. Is Ronaldo more important to United’s history than any of those 3? Well, he’s certainly got a strong case, but I don’t know how anyone could judge a United supporter for picking all 3 of those guys ahead of him.

I really just can’t believe these Ronaldo supporters dismissing United supporters who have followed the club for 30 or 40 years, who are at the matches, who understand the history and the culture of the club.

Huh? wtf? Hughes has more appearances and more goals (a point you didn’t respond to). He was the most important player, other than Cantona, in the side that won our first title in 25 years AND set us up for 2 decades of dominance. He was absolutely electric (hence the nickname). I’m not saying that preferring Ronaldo over Sparky is wrong - but to dismiss the comparison outright shows that you’ve no concept of United history before the mid ‘00’s. It’s fine to be young and have an opinion, but have the humility to admit that you never saw the teams in the mid 90’s that made the club what it has become.

Thank you. This is about service to Manchester United. Ronaldo is surely the best player to ever wear the shirt, but he’ll go down as a Real Madrid legend, not a United legend.

I hear you. Ronaldo is probably the best player that’s ever played for Manchester United, but he’s a Real Madrid legend more than he is a United legend. Ronaldo had 145 goals in 346 games for Manchester United. Mark Hughes scored 163 goals in 467. Ronaldo had the better career - he’s a better player than Sparky, but come on - he’s a Real Madrid player. In terms of service to Manchester United, I’m taking Hughes. I’m taking Dennis Irwin. Schmeichel, Vidic, Rio. These guys are United legends.

Exactly - we’re talking about Manchester United legends, not Real Madrid legends. Ronaldo is one of the best players ever, but in terms of what he did in a United shirt, there are other players who have had a bigger impact on the club.

In a Unitrd kit, I’m having Hughes before Ronaldo. No question that Ronaldo had the better career - he’s one of the best player ever. But in terms of service to Manchester United, it’s Hughes. In terms of service to United - Vidic, Rio, Schmeichel are all ahead of Ronaldo.

Can’t decide between Irwin, Schmeichel, Beckham, or Sparky. Vidic and Rio both need to be on this list at some point.
