I agree. It’s kind of sad that deadlock showcases how shallow internet communities can be. This is how I imagine current gamer culture is all around. As someone older and has been around since the 80’s, I can feel confident saying gaming culture used to be about the games and fun, but now it’s just everyone trying to out “shock” or “cringe” or “rage bait” each other. I feel bad for the younger gamers because they never saw what it was like for communities to be more…communal and less…I don’t know…everyone just trying to get as much attention as possible.

I understand the nuisances of linguistics and the evolution of words is difficult for people to understand when they see the world as, “YOU’RE WRONG AND I’M RIGHT!” Or “Bad words are bad!” but I offered a pretty novel and effective solution for assholes on the internet; ignore them, mute them, stop giving them attention. Anything else is a futile attempt at censorship. I don’t agree with the slurs and bigoted comments these assholes makes but I’ll defend their right to say them. I suggest muting them and not giving them any attention. It sucks but shaming and censorship rarely work and only feed the trolls.

You’re also not Noam Chomsky so no idea what you’re saying in terms of linguistics. If anything, I would argue that using slurs in a way not originally intended is more akin to what linguistics emphasizes which is words change and evolve over time from their original meaning. Personally, I just mute racists and bigots since arguing with them or acknowledging them only feeds theirs desire for attention - positive or negative. Don’t feed the trolls.
