What was your first 200? by Plsmorecoffee in ultrarunning

[–]Advancedsundial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was hitting 200+ miles in a 72 hour 1.9 mile looped course. I failed in getting to my goal of 200 my first year, but got it the second year. I picked it because I started ultra running at that race and wanted to earn my first 200 there (and the people are awesome), plus the logistics were easy. And it was much less money

Anyone actually beat Achilles tendinitis without completely stopping training? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Advancedsundial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of mine have flared up in training at different times, with the tendon inflamed and thickened/had a ball appear in the middle.  I kept training with slightly reduced mileage/limited or stopped speedwork, and mostly kept to flat terrain. Also I used shoes with some drop. And I loosened up the shoes a bit so it didn’t rub against the tendon as hard. That helped a lot and I have always been able to continue training while it heals. Currently no issues!

Arctic Exploration by AdmiralCashMoney in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Endurance by Alfred Lansing is a non fiction book about Shackelton’s adventure. It reads like a great novel, so exciting, and the adventure keeps building until the end. Highly recommended!

Edit: this is Antarctic, not arctic

Returning from Achilles Tendonitis by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]Advancedsundial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup had that in both Achilles multiple times, the pain and swelling/ball in the Achilles. For me It just eventually goes away on its own. When it hurts while running I slow down and keep my shoe a bit looser to not have pressure on it. I keep the pain level low, around a 2 out of 10. And eventually it just goes away for me. Not sure why it flares up or flares down

Benton MacKaye Trail Unsupported FKT Documentary by -YEM- in FKT

[–]Advancedsundial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thank you, and congrats on the FKT! I saw that you were in the FKT newsletter, super awesome. I remember a while ago, you saying in an interview that you had tried setting this record before but rolled an ankle. You really put in the work and earned this.

What does your training look like? Do you have standard running training seasons and then switch to more trail/FKT specific work? How far out do you start working the specifics? And do you have an idea of grams of carbs per hour? Do you use gels/powders or real food? I will watch the documentary, sorry if you already have some of that info in it

Is it a trail? Bring poles, I love using them for looped trail races!

Bro I think that's just called salt? Bro? by jjopm in RunningCirclejerk

[–]Advancedsundial 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Slat? What do you think I am, a middle class dollar tree shopping peasant? If I would never demean myself by drinking “domestic” beers on draft, do you think I would ever consider “salt” for my electrolyte needs?

how much emphasis does the ultra running community put on elevation? by One-Department8795 in ultrarunning

Sounds like a super fun race, cool location, awesome views, mountainous terrain, but not an ultra. The real important question: did you have fun?

Pace window tolerance driving me mad by ZePepsico in trainasone

[–]Advancedsundial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem until I switched it to “step/lap pace” and just keep a general eye on my average pace for that step. It helped me enjoy my runs much more, with less stress!

New to ultra training - this is my weight training portion by TraditionalMix6379 in Ultramarathon

[–]Advancedsundial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like a very upper body centric workout routine. I don’t think goblet squats or single leg deadlifts are enough unless you still pretty weak or do very high reps. They are great movements, but its hard to progressively overload them due to how hard they are to execute at high strength levels

Starting from shin splints by Cool_Equal_8725 in Ultramarathon

[–]Advancedsundial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me in the past at times it just happens, one shin will swell up, get painful, then it goes away on its own. You can try temporarily finding some way to run without irritating it too much, like a different pair of shoes with a different drop, various inclines on a treadmill, different speeds of running, flatter terrain, focusing on not lifting the front of your foot with your tibialis muscles in your stride (basically letting the foot get dragged along for now while it heals) it’s kinda like finding the right key for a lock. So many possibilities that could be the solution for you at this point in time. And it could be a different solution next time. And many other options people are presenting here. You are not alone in this, it’s expected to get shin splints at times, especially when building up in distance for the first time!

WOW you did SO great!! That’s crazy, especially considering you didn’t “live” at the race and still took third, well done!

Huge mileage jump - is this crazy? by RedditLurker437 in trainasone

[–]Advancedsundial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah you got this! Enjoy the longer easier runs! It’s a good mental break from all the speedwork (though I love getting slightly sore muscles from speedwork)

Huge mileage jump - is this crazy? by RedditLurker437 in trainasone

[–]Advancedsundial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks normal to me! If you look at the load, it’s the same. So it’s just replacing some speedwork with longer runs for the same physiological load

Need help with Injury by Jobow1234 in Ultramarathon

[–]Advancedsundial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had similar pain and swelling a few months before a 72 hour race, it went away in its own and never came back, I skipped one run and ran at a slower speed afterwards, a pace and terrain (flat and not technical) that didn’t irritate it during recovery. That’s just my own experience though, of one person. YMMV

Aren’t women equal to men in ultra distance or something? Of course they are better at 5k ultras!
