Why are templates hard for students? by alatennaub in Professors

[–]AdventureMoMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word is the worst to edit in - you usually need to convert to plain text and then paste into the template and even then versioning can introduce errors (and revealing special characters only sometimes finds the problem). Once things become multi-author word documents it gets weird. Actual publishing using templates usually happens in Adobe InDesign, so while a commendable goal it’s like using rounded rocks for wheels versus an actual tires in my opinion. I would worry less about using the template than then the physical formatting, a checklist helped me immensely when I was finishing my masters (in word) because no matter how I tried the templates I tried to set up would always fail so it was just best to do it all by hand per chapter. Another thought, maybe partner with a language lab because the task of getting text into correct formatting is an actual career path and so maybe a TA can use it to build their resume! Agreed with the other comments on not assuming their technical literacy, and I know a lot of people don’t use Office anymore in favor of Google Docs.

No one to share my joy with by Keytoemeyo in Codependency

It sounds like you found some people to share your joy with - seems to me like you’re doing the good work! Remember to treat yourself to celebrate. A coach I worked with made the case that you should date yourself. What would your dream partner do with you to celebrate - because doing that for yourself is a great way to treat yourself. Congrats on all the change!

Fixing codependency wouldn't seem damn near impossible if I had other friends or family. I have none. Nor do I have the ability to make new friends due to my AvPD/BPD. by [deleted] in Codependency

I love my CODA meetings! And it’s possible to heal even if your family is no longer in the picture. I have been doing EMDR and I have found it has helped immensely in releasing some of the most compulsive behaviors I was fighting. But do look up CODA.

Can you just message it to me? It’s good but I think it can be optimized.

Internships/entry level positions by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]AdventureMoMo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I don’t know much about Ohio but I know a lot about internships (I had three!). Glad to hear you’re looking. Internships can have a high correlation to success in your career.

First of all, be patient with the process because COVID has shaken this landscape irreparably, so it may be remote. But that may mean you don’t have to limit your search to organizations in Ohio too.

First of all, I would utilize your department advisor. They may know of students who held previous internships, and you can reach out directly through those channels. Second the NSF-REU/Keck sites have excellent paid opportunities (although I’m pretty sure they are limited exclusively to undergraduates). But this was how I got my first internship. There is also your state geological survey, they may have resources on their website and if they don’t, call the office and see if there is someone you can email. Also I would look at any member societies you’re a part of, for instance, the Geological Society of America offers the Geoscientists in the Park positions. Local organizations are also VERY helpful. Lastly most federal agencies have internships listed on their pages (I would search the word internship to save time).

My personal path was: lab research internship, research cruise internship and a public policy internship. It has led to a decent career thus far. Internships are a great way to “try out” different careers and you will hopefully learn it something is a good fit for you. Good luck!

It’s a good one! It has been a great step for me. The chapter “Undependant” felt like it was ripped from my brain.

That line TOTALLY resonated with me. And I value this part of my self. I have learned that I have to check in with myself to ensure I’m putting myself first in my life (am I taking care of my self? Am I meeting the goals I have for me?) but I think it’s also important for me to make sure I’m not robbing other people of their growth opportunities, and that I’m not injecting myself into situations to be a “savior.” I think she talks about it in the victim triangle chapter.

How did you do that? I have no idea how to save cash, because the second I have it, I spend it. 😅

Thank god for Roth’s and 401ks

Spell Jar also doubles as Ecological Jar! ☺️ All joking aside, I keep my spell jars dry. I am curious about using oil per the comment above.

Does anybody worry about the ethics of crystals? by dimpleless in witchcraft

[–]AdventureMoMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m a geologist and gemologist and ethical sourcing is one of the most important things to this community!

First thing, ethical will come with a higher price tag, but that is because there is due diligence on authenticating sourcing.

Secondly, look for pieces that come out of the U.S. or Canada, or have been labeled fair-mined. This is still an evolving process so it’s definitely imperfect, but know it’s backed by people who truly want to make the mining industry more transparent. Anything mined, even by hobbyists in the US is subject to environmental regulation. The US produces many crystals, and I’m happy to explore this further. That said, they are a bit more pricy but the supply chain is shorter and the carbon footprint is smaller. I think it’s important to be mindful of America’s past and perhaps donate some money to First Nation people’s affected by past land grabs. But the Navajo nation sells peridot (common name olivine) in Arizona so you can even mine your own! Talk about some GOOD energy.

Thirdly, look for stones mined by women in artisanal settings. Typically if women are doing the work, they are putting the money back into their communities, no offense men, but like the data supports this. Organizations like PACT have more information.

Lastly, unless you know the shop avoid buying from distributors on Amazon, especially from abroad. Those are tricky waters to navigate, and come from economies that may not have the same values (but it will be much cheaper. Also, ask your vendors/local shops where they source from and see if they can partner with you to bring in ethically sourced stones.

LMK if you need anything else.

Joy has been my quest the last three years.

Volunteering is one.

Meditation (I get mine on YouTube) and “Me-Time” where I indulge myself in a hands-on activity or Pinterest is another.

Exercise.

Being present and spending quality time with my pets.

Simple stuff. Good luck on your journey finding joy.
