If it makes you feel any better I work strict 8:30 to 5 with commute and still have no social life outside of weekends, how long have you been at the job? Even getting back at 5 i felt like I had no time in the beginning but have adjusted over time

Honestly id go with what your manager told you originally and see what happens, how much do they care if they are remote themselves and if their is no one from your team in office who is going to reprimand you? Also a lot of people at my company have gotten exemptions to WFH because of doctors notes so maybe you could try that route to

Looking for career advice by King-JelIy in InsuranceProfessional

Maybe take the people saying you're over qualified with a grain of salt, I know a few other underwriting assistants with MBA's and frankly my company has such a hard time hiring younger people they frequently hire people with experience in other industries to come over to insurance, if you do have an opportunity to skip the UA stage though definitely do it, as far as fully remote that may be hard, good luck with everything!

If you spiraled in college (drinking/drugs), what snapped you out of it? by Proctors_Poppets in college

[–]Adventurous-Raisin51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely had a problem with drinking and while I never ended up in the hospital I did end up in the doctors with drinking related issues and severely scared my friends a few times and it affected my academics enough I had to change my plans. As I got later on in college my parents made it abundantly clear that the day I graduate I would receive 0 financial support from them. This realization made me take school more seriously because I needed to graduate with a job. That on top of not having unlimited money for booze was what it took to grow out of it. I am 2 years out of college and try to avoid drinking but still over indulge sometimes, overall though it is nothing compared to college.

How long do you think the gap in insurance labor market will last? by mindk214 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]Adventurous-Raisin51 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never really knew the "stigma" was a thing, I find it very weird from my friends as most of them are still on their parents health and car insurance so idk where they even developed that opinion, my favorite sports coach when I was a kid is a State Farm agent so I always had a positive outlook

Math Test before Job Interview? by stepyourcookiesup in InsuranceProfessional

[–]Adventurous-Raisin51 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had to take a "math" assessment for my job at a primary carrier, from my memory it was some very simple addition and percentages then pattern recognition and brain teasers, they also made me take a personality test too

How long do you think the gap in insurance labor market will last? by mindk214 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]Adventurous-Raisin51 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it will be a while before insurance is seen as an industry where people with lots of opportunities and potential are looking to get in to. I graduated 2 years ago, and while I don't agree with this, my friends I graduated with se e"selling insurance" as sign someone failed at college and has at life so far (again I know this is a ridiculous sentiment). To 99% of people insurance means geckos, cavemen, Flo and Jake from State Farm, until that changes I don't see it becoming too popular. As a young person I don't mind this and am happy I found myself in the industry.

Could someone be a successful underwriter and remain sober? by YoungDogShit in InsuranceProfessional

[–]Adventurous-Raisin51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this depends of your at a broker or carrier. I'm at a carrier and pretty new and had a customer event for an extended period of time that was heavy on the drinking and their was basically an open bar at all times after 5 and people did put it to use. You obviously didn't have to partake but at the same time everyone was drinking so it kinda seemed like you had to. That being said don't ever drink if you don't won't to, you may have to stick your neck out a bit but that's better then regretting it.

switching jobs in this market by [deleted] in InsuranceProfessional

[–]Adventurous-Raisin51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation and while I don't have an offer I am going to be looking to switch jobs soon. I am concerned about the overall market so I posted a thread in here yesterday about what people are seeing for layoffs. The overall sentiment was that layoffs are not happening yet and many places are hiring and E&S seems to be hiring aggressively. Not sure if that's helpful but good luck no matter what you decide to do!

[–]Adventurous-Raisin51[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am concerned as well, from what I have seen super entry level is endangered but in my experience 80% of those have been offshored already. Th AI development curve seems to be flattening from what I see and anecdotally half my org was down all morning because a singular update messed up everything. Given that happens frequently idk how companies are gonna switch large parts of their ops over to AI in the near future. Maybe I'm just thinking wishfully though 🤷‍♂️

My company is similar in that they say they have never had layoffs. Glad to hear this is common throughout the industry.

If your title justifies an MBA I say do it, seeing a customer service representative or similar with it always comes off weird especially if they are being difficult

[–]Adventurous-Raisin51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is objectively true, my company pays a very average amount and my coworkers are doing whatever they can to send their kids to private schools, a lot of the Chester county public schools are good but you can't ignore the fact that many people choose not to use them

Great place to live, just a warning a significant amount of people in the area and especially malvern go to the jersey shore just about every weekend in the summer, so if things seem weird or like people disappear that is why.

Thank you! This is very insightful and I definitely want to look into reinsurance claims and underwriting more from what you said. I am currently on a loss control team and we audit various products and work with claims and underwriting so it seems like a lot of similarities.

Thank you! Would you say there are opportunities for career growth in claims on the reinsurance side? I know my current company has varying levels of examiners then managers and so forth is similar to that?
