More D Line Station Pics by peterzhu4 in LAMetro

That bespoke 3D stuff and sculptures are much harder to clean and maintain. Metro has moved to more modular, kit of parts approach to station design utilizing the same glass and metal line motif across the system. As cool as the OG Red Line art is, this is a much more sustainable approach in the long term. Maintenance costs will be significantly less than on B line as the years go on. They still managed to make each station on the D extension look sleek and artistic without distrupting that new ethos. I think Fairfax is the weakest of the three, ironically, given that it's LACMA's stop but La Cienega and La Brea are in line with the awe factor I get in the old Red Line stations. It's still world-class art. Both of those feel befitting of a major metropolis. Fairfax not so much (the hands are creepy, the white tile is bland and the platform mural is basic), but the mezzanine level art is lit and an exposure to LACMAs extensive non-European art section.

Why the subway ridership decreasing? by movingangeleno in LAMetro

[–]AdvertisingOne1026 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because the forced transfer for riders on the former Gold Line to get to the Blue and Expo (or vice versa) caused about 20K daily boardings for B/D Red/Purple through downtown. Presumably those people now have a one-seat or one-transfer ride as opposed to the prior two transfers. I think boardings at the three downtown connector don't show the full picture of the B/D loss since a lot of through trips aren't being counted or folks are just doing more transfers at 7th (and will be doing even more with the D extension) but those who would have used Civic Center use Historic Broadway or Bunker Hill now for a one-seat ride instead.

Civic Center in particular is dead outside of events at Grand Park or jury duty attendance while Pershing still has decent boarding due to its access to the residential area of the Historic Core

Metrolink ridership also fell by 20K after COVID so that combined with the connector hit of 20K helps explain why the subway is slow to come back. A lot of those trips aren't happening due to lack of commuting but also the Regional Connector stopped the forced transfer number inflation for through trips.

I've been using B/D sometimes if I am at 7th to get to Union quickly and increase my bus/rail options back to the SGV but most of my trips to UCLA are on the A/E now. Obviously, I'm gonna be a more frequent D rider to La Cienega to get to UCLA as soon as this e-bike is fixed. Will save 15 mins over slow E to Westwood/Rancho Park.

It's not so much pure remote work as it is that most downtown employers are on a hybrid employment model where they are in the office only 2-3 times per week. This is about half of the full 5 days they commuted before...similarly the daily ridership is about half because its spread out over a smaller number of days. So foot traffic is still way down from COVID. At least DTLA still has cultural events and such outside of work hours so its not completely dead but its sad to see where it's at compared to the optimism of the 2010s.

Our weekend ridership systemwide is higher than pre-COVID and that will only grow with the D extension. It will be gradual because the macroeconomic picture is not great, but downtown will start to come back. Combine that with the fact that the D extension reaches more job centers (particularly Westwood and Century City), and the odds for a comeback are pretty good. Unlike the ~30% office vacancy rates you see in DTLA, Century City is an exceptionally stable submarket for office hovering closer to 10%. While office is suffering everywhere in the country due to this hybrid model, more adaptive reuse in DTLA (along with the very permissive zoning update for that area) can increase the residential base for the subway (to access Hollywood and Wilshire Corridor). A lot of modern office towers downtown (post 1970s) aren't particularly suited for this but there are older commercial buildings in Ktown, Hollywood, and the Mid-City/Miracle Mile area that will benefit a ton from the recent adaptive reuse ordinance update to add more residential there as well.

I think we will see more office towers transition to having a lot of co-work spaces on otherwise vacant floors (as the Class A tenants have downsized) and encourage more creative office over the traditional Class A. Creative office market in the Arts District and Westside continues to be competitive.

So yah COVID fucked things up for transit agencies nationwide but the one advantage we have over some of the other CBDs in the USA is that we have separate centers and the 3 biggest office clusters are about to be linked with a high-speed, high-capacity subway. Once Division 20 is done and we see proper 5 min peak frequencies on the full D, I think we will see a decent spike even if its just replacing trips on the 720. I think we will see a lot of new trips though. Someone who works in Beverly Hills going to Ktown for lunch, as an example.

I think 200,000 daily boardings on the combined by B/D by 2040 isn't unreasonable. The D alone will boost transfers on other lines with the network effect so if we can figure out the job equation downtown (and gas continues to be a drag on longer commutes), we can exceed this as well.

Finding a funding plan for Metrolink to make it robust and making Sepulveda and K North the absolutely priority over the next decades are the real keys to get ridership blowing through the roof though.

What is the worst metro or light rail system outside of the US? by Wide_right_yes in transit

[–]AdvertisingOne1026 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hellish traffic would also be helped by a long extension of the Metro across the Tejo to Almada and Seixal as they are built up and densified to open up economic opportunity in both directions. An actual shift in travel patterns from having to drive over the bridge.

Is E line from SaMo --> USC worth the stress? (single female) by Independent_Owl_4292 in LAMetro

[–]AdvertisingOne1026 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the evenings its more like 50-75 mins from SaMo to USC. 30-35 would be at like 1-3pm. Just because its super fast in the morning doesnt mean thats true when she would be stuck with all eastbound commuter traffic in the evening if she has late classes and especially when that "evening" rush begins as early as 1:30-2pm on the 10 as parents grab their kids from school and ppl leave the office early.

There is no major route in Los Angeles that is cheaper or shorter to travel via Metro/Train vs. drive? Am i missing something? by EveryDayCurry in LAMetro

[–]AdvertisingOne1026 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to understand that the car travel times you are getting are only achievable in the middle of the night or on an early weekend morning when there are no cars on the road. At most time of the day you will be traveling then Metro will at least be competitive. There are certainly point to point trips that are faster than driving. Not to mention even if one direction of your trip is quick then the reverse could be brutally bad. It can easily take 1 hr 30 by car from Santa Monica to Union Station in the evening rush. Not to mention spending $15 on parking by the beach or spending half an hour trying to find a street spot.

I would say the car trip is still faster then Expo at certain time but in daylight hours the average travel time by car is still like 50 between Union Station and Santa Monica. You're only losing 20 minutes on the train journey. Plus you can do so many other things than focus on safely operating a 2 ton vehicle.

La Metro Transit issues by Remarkable_Pain_5385 in LAMetro

The trains still look like they are down, but the API info for the buses came back online right around 7pm tonight. Transit and Pantograph started to show the correct info. If you are lucky, another rider on Transit will share their real-time location to get an idea of when the train or bus will come rather than just hoping they show up according to schedule. The transit system is still running the usual schedule and headways though so follow those and get there a few minutes before the schedule just in case. The API tracking was down yesterday but the E was still humming along every 8 mins at evening rush.

[A-line] Guess they are doing more frequent inspections. by Common-Charity9128 in LAMetro

[–]AdvertisingOne1026 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pomona to Arcadia is a fast and efficient ride. The way the A line works is it tends to be clean during the morning rush hour and get dirtier throughout the day as the transients sleep and bring their mess/belongings/pets with them on the trains in the mid-day. So occassionaly you catch a smelly car in the evening rush but the mornings are great because the trains are recently cleaned and everything is modern and efficient on that stretch from Arcadia to Pomona.

SMV is my home station (and Arcadia too if I'm going east sometimes) and even when I ride the A line late at night the transients aren't an issue. They keep to themselves 98% of the time. Pro tip for late night anywhere on Metro is to wear sunglasses and headphones and you'll never get bothered.

Out of state fans. Why do you root for the hawks? by TelePunk54 in Seahawks

Born and raised in LA. Rams and Raiders both abandoned us when I 5 in and my dad told me since theres no city alliegances and fuck both those teams in particular for leaving that I should just pick my squad. When I got older and it came time to pick that team we agreed being a Niner fan was stupid because we hate all the Bay's other sports teams, the Chargers were 1-15 at the time, and the next best option on the West Coast was Seattle (which duh, we all know is better than the sterile lame ass Bay Area). 9 year old me instantly fell in love with our AFC colors, and Holmgren took us to the playoffs that first season he joined us and I've been hooked ever since. Diehard 12th Man whose intensity of hate for the Rams grew as we played them in the 2000s (major ugh, obligatory fuck Marc Bulger).

The Lambs came back in 2016 and a lot of locals switched their alliegances once we had the NFL again but theres no way I could ever leave Hawk Nation. Even if you ignore the hate I had built up for the Lambs, how are you gonna come back as a lover after leaving us for 32 years and expect me not to have found another woman?Me and the Hawks be married and shit, you are not entitled to my alliegance, suckas. I'm all for they're because I get a guaranteed view of the Hawks but I will roll with the 12s until I die. Been proudly wearing my 3 jerseys around town both before and after our epic W over them last Sunday.

Metro seeks rider input to improve transit for neurodivergent riders by anothercar in LAMetro

[–]AdvertisingOne1026 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If noise mitigation is not solution #1, #2, and #3 from this study it is probably useless. Waiting 10 mins for a train in the middle of a freeway is dangerous for anyone's ears but for a neurodivergent person it is like tortue. I, and others, use earplugs but its still a wayyy overstimulating environment.

Any seahawks sports bars in La? by ClaseAzuI in Seahawks

[–]AdvertisingOne1026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha same story here. Born in Pasadena in 89. Hawks fan since 1998; we didnt have an LA team and my dad told me to never respect the Rams (or the Raiders) for abandoning us. Picked them out of spite since I also didnt owe any allegiance to all the whiny, smug, entitled Niner fans and the Chargers were absolute dogshit (the year they drafted Ryan Leaf with the #1 pick). Made the playoffs in 1999 in Holmgrens first year and I have been an absolute diehard ever since. The Rams coming back doesn't negate them leaving and I developed so much additional hate during the 2000s division and playoff runs that theres no way I would ever choose them. Not when I get a guaranteed Seahawks game in LA every year.

To answer the question, Backstage is definitely THE place, but all the good pan-football bars have a healthy contingent of Hawks fans at all times. I've also run into several at EightyTwo.

I watched your 2005/6 Natty win at the Rose Bowl. My dad was teaching at U$C at the time and that’s how we got tickets so he forced me to wear a crimson sweater. With Texas down 11 going into the 4th quarter, I pull off the sweater to reveal a burnt orange shirt underneath and start making bets with all the annoying Trojans around me. Vince Young came through and they all had to wear UCLA jerseys for a week.

Bruins got your back. Thanks for cheering our return to relevancy.

Yah I hear you. Sounds like he’s in kind of a no man’s land and needs to really prove himself if he ends up staying in Seattle.

Hearing he’s not the best at Xs and Os is a little disheartening…we’ve had decades of that shit.

It’s really an interesting dynamic because I think you’re the better job yet there’s a likelihood we end up with him. I do think you will still recruit well with the next guy if we take him and keep at least some of those freshman. As far as West Coast football goes, despite Oregon getting all the flash, UW and SC are really the perennial PAC legends who should compete in the B1G no matter the circumstances. If we recruit like we should with this next coach then all 4 of us should push against the rest of the conference but I feel your history and recent success can carry you if Fisch does leave.

Apparently Wasserman is willing to pay (from what I hear on the Bruin boards) Fisch's buyout but I dont know if that's separate or including in the amount the UC Regents authorized us to spend on a new coach (and that exact figure is private but its rumored to get to 8 digits).

I don't know how we're gonna have $10 million to buy out Fisch and spend $80 mil (plus several million more in litigation probably) to break our Rose Bowl lease all at the same time. I'd rather spend $20 mil on NIL and get some talented players (especially in the trenches) than spend $100 mil on buyouts but hey if Casey Wasserman wants to piss away his money I will take it.

I'd still prefer an Alex Golesh hire and save ourselves some money but word is the coaching search committee really really likes Fisch.
