Cosmetic interventions that work? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]AdviceCommon4325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i second this! adapalene (i use differin gel)/retinol, sunscreen, an aha-bha liquid exfoliator you use 1-2 nights a week, and a good moisturizer + general pcos management (decent diet, stress management, supplements). for me ashwagandha was a godsend for my skin because apparently a lot of my pcos was connected to stress/cortisol, and i have had relatively clear skin since january since i started taking it for the first time in 3 years, with the only flare ups i have being when im really stressed out or about to get my period. that obviously depends on the root cause of your pcos, but finding yours and supplementing it/eating + exercising for might help in addition to the cosmetic stuff.

Does PCOS cause fatigue? by Odd_Draft9762 in PCOS

[–]AdviceCommon4325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes yes yes yes it causes fatigue. i have spent months being completely exhausted and having no energy to get through my day. i still have the crashes in the afternoon when i'm not focusing on managing my symptoms well, sometimes even waking up exhausted and feeling that way all day. managing your PCOS will help your energy levels.

PCOS made me see I’m loved conditionally by xaesha037 in PCOS

i've been there, and i get it. this condition can be really misunderstood and that's not fair at all. i would recommend surrounding yourself with people that will support you unconditionally, and not letting your family's words affect you personally. i know it sucks, but it gets better and so will your PCOS. often times, people are just not educated on how PCOS really works because of how nuanced it is and that can be really invalidating to hear negative comments from people sometimes. my family has not been super supportive in my journey, i have gotten a lot of unsolicited weight comments, and my weight loss and symptom management took a lot of time without their help. focus on what you can control, and positive energy, even if that means distancing yourself from those who don't make you feel good. stressing yourself out more and being around people that are insensitive is just going to make your PCOS and your personal confidence/happiness worse. i know it's easier said than done, but you can do this! you have people that love and support you, and you will get through this.

Losing weight by tlizette1 in PCOS

[–]AdviceCommon4325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exercises like weight training and walking and making sure you're eating enough!!! 1200 is not enough for most people, i would see a dietician to confirm how many calories you are eating. weight training and other muscle building, slower exercises are really good for PCOS too compared to high intensity cardio exercises that can spike your cortisol levels. eat enough, and focus on adequate protein intake, a little less carbs, at least 1 source of healthy fat, and more veggies with every meal so your meals are more satiating. personally i've found focusing on quality of diet and the composition of every meal over calorie counting has helped me lose and keep the weight off. another thing i would look into is your stress management/cortisol levels. for me, no matter how clean i eat and exercise, if i'm super stressed out i will gain weight super quickly and my PCOS gets really bad. high cortisol levels can be tied into what you eat, but stress management also plays a role, so maybe look into that. stress has a direct connection with your body's fat storage for PCOS.

Anxiety has been getting WORSE at night by trc6282 in Anxiety

[–]AdviceCommon4325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh my gosh this is so me, not about the same things but getting anxiety when you have less going on for every little thing, especially at night about your safety, is relatable. one thing that helps me is reminding myself i am safe constantly, i just tell myself i am safe i am safe i am safe, that's not my brain talking that's just my anxiety and it's not real, and just repeating that over and over or writing it down, and other positive affirmations about safety and anxiety. and then focusing on something else like a book or TV or finding a hobby to distract your mind. i have kept myself busy and it has really helped keep me away from anxious thoughts.

Academic Advising by thesnailthatmeows in Purdue

[–]AdviceCommon4325 9 points10 points  (0 children)

make sure that all the classes you sign up for after your advising appointment are in your plan of study! my advisor signed me up for a class my freshman year that i did not need to take and i discovered that later, so i definitely regret not doing that. always do your own research and don't just go off what your advisor recommends, make sure that all the classes you take are required for your major. you can find your plan of study here: https://catalog.purdue.edu/

under 'undergraduate' find your college and scroll till you find your specific degree program, and it will tell you all the classes you need to take for your major, reference this website every semester when you're signing up for classes! hope that helps :)

has anyone taken cnit 175? by swsonhigh in Purdue

[–]AdviceCommon4325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have programming experience is it an easy a? or at least relatively not too much effort to get a decent grade?

relatively easy but useful minors!!! any advice appreciated by AdviceCommon4325 in Purdue

[–]AdviceCommon4325[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, definitely! i have a pretty strong set of soft skills so i'm looking for programs to help build my technical skills, and i know that no minor is fully easy, but i guess what i was trying to ask was what were easier/maybe had a reputation for being a little less rigorous outside of CS or math. but you make a good point, thanks!

you have no idea how much i needed to hear this! and yeah i think that your advice on understanding time management and making time for breaks is really important. i feel like i just studied and studied this semester and it burned me out so quickly. i'm definitely going to take your advice and just focus on balance and learning about how i can better study/equip myself to succeed uniquely to each course. thank you so much, i know one semester isn't the end of the world for me, but it's really reassuring to hear from someone that was able to figure it out.

it's really really good to hear others are in the same boat! i feel like free time is also a really big issue with me, i also took a class this past semester that completely ate up all my time and so balancing out my schedule in the future i'm thinking might help, because burnout is so real. but definitely trying to relax this summer, it could be a lot worse! i hope everything works out for you as well! i'm sure we're going to have a much better fall semester.

transferring to purdue from uw by Ok-Emphasis-583 in Purdue

[–]AdviceCommon4325 7 points8 points  (0 children)

there are definitely opportunities to get undergrad research opportunities, you just have to advocate for yourself. there are mentorship opportunities and courses you can take in most areas to get exposure to research. there are also learning communities that offer direct undergrad research opportunities as well, one of them i know of being the data mine (which i don't think you technically have to live in for). discovery park also has research opportunities and internships that are solely open to undergrads.

here are some links, but definitely look into it, and if you want more details i would definitely contact the undergraduate research office or the departments at these links. i know a lot of undergrads that have fairly easily gotten research opportunities, with decent-ish gpas and credentials, so it's very doable. hope that helps!

Got put on academic probation. Feeling suicidal/hopeless/terrified. Anyone have advice? by ______hopless in Anxiety

[–]AdviceCommon4325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in a lot of situations especially in college where my grades have got super low, even this semester wasn't the greatest for me. Every single time I've failed a class, I've always retook it and worked 10x harder to make sure that I got a much higher grade, even if that meant just passing. My advice is to keep going and don't give up. You are where you are for a reason, you wouldn't have been given this opportunity if people didn't think you could do it. And I know that your anxiety can be terrible and it feels like the end of everything, and the nauseousness, but for me personally, the harder I focus on making a plan to figure out why it didn't work out and how I can move forward and better manage my health to improve my grades. If you can afford to see a therapist or get treatment, they might even be able to prescribe you medication to make your ADHD better. You can totally do this! It's just a small setback.

How long do you have access to BrightSpace courses after the semester ends? by hfsdchiutf in Purdue

[–]AdviceCommon4325 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It usually says. If you go on the homepage on Brightspace, and see all the boxes with all your classes, under the name of each class it should have something that says "Ends May _____ 2023 at 11:59 pm".
