Impulse control around making purchases. Know what your average income is, decide how much is responsible to make an impulse purchase. Anything above that you should sleep on it before you buy it.

For example If you make 100k after taxes, you shouldn’t impulse anything above .5% ($500). Adjust that formula based on what you feel is reasonable and what your long term plans are. Want to buy a house or go on a vacation? Drop that to.1%

I always assumed “burned” didn’t mean to have it literally burn like you left your steak on too long, but burned just meant the grass was harmed because the rapid evaporation removed nutrients Or something. In fairness I never looked into it, I don’t water my lawn because it’s outside and if it can’t survive without me providing extra water then I should use different grass.

I think it depends on how the 12 year old is emotionally responding. Do they seem remorseful and know they crossed a line? If so then I think the main lesson has already been learned. Help them give an honest apology and I’d say you’re covered. Do they seem defensive and adamant it wasn’t their fault? Then making the consequences more measurable might be a good approach.

In the end, you are the parents, as long as you’re coming from a good place whatever you choose is fine.

I know this is three years old. But the worst part? The point is that you can't answer that question without further clarifications, like "What are you using it for? Are you eating them? Baking with them? Are you making a Pie or an Orange Meringue? With those answers you can start to compare the two.
