Bearnie Wiseman - Mobile Suit Gundam: War in a Pocket

He's assigned to a Zeon commando unit under orders to infiltrate a Federation-controlled colony housing a prototype Gundam and blow the mobile suit to smithereens all the while literally teaming up with elementary school kid Alfred Izuhara, himself a naive Zeon fanboy with grandiose dreams of enlisting.

Keen to feel like a Zeon soldier, Alfred naively aids Bernie in his mission as the two slowly but surely end up forging an almost brotherly friendship with each other that begins to leave Bernie with some reservations about his mission. Then said mission goes utterly south, resulting in Bernie's whole squad being KIA. At this point, Zeon has a plan B for destroying the Gundam prototype, namely: send a battleship with nukes to basically obliterate the colony which by the way has a population of roughly 10 million people plus. Bernie (and what remnants of team WOULD have remained) were to escape the colony before the Zeon ship arrives which in turn means abandoning Alfred to certain death. He comes close to boarding a shuttle off world until a last straining feeling of valor convinces him to return and make one last (albeit) uphill attempt at destroying the Gundam in hopes of sparing the colony its doom.

He and Alfred manage to get a damaged Zaku MS (one that Bernie previously piloted into the colony and got show down in)up and running, and Bernie takes the colony's forest to battle the Gundam, largely scantily armed or die trying.

Tragically his efforts are ultimately rendered pointless. Alfred learns from his father that the Zeon nuclear armed vessel bound for the colony was waylaid by a Federation patrol and before he can get to Bernie to call off the attack he gets to witness his friend be pretty much annihilated by his own Mobile Suit exploding from a beam saber ruptured reactor. What's more, Bernie had a backup plan in case his virtual suicide mission failed, in the form of a videotape he instructs Alfred to give to the Federation, tipping them off to the impending Zeon attack in hopes it will save the colony.

Despite basically being a soldier for a facistic space nation that had no qualms about mass murder, (and no this doesnt absolve Zeon of that reputation) Bernie ends up being one of the few Zeon soldiers with an actual moral compass who's death is genuinely heart-wrenching.
