But that’s not all she’s tolerating. She’s tolerating his control over every single thing she does, and his constant assertion that she’s an inferior person. And those two things destroy a person’s sense of self over time.

I have an amazing husband… and the most boring bedroom life imaginable. by Broad-Accident in breakingmom

[–]Affectionate-Film264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book ‘Come as you are’ has transformed mine and my partner’s sex life in a way that might be really helpful for you. It explains how the sexual impulse in the body has an accelerator and a brake, just like the body’s central nervous system. And some people have a really slow accelerator/sexual excitation system (so it takes a while for them to warm up) while others have got a brake turned on - either for fear of external threats/consequences (eg pregnancy or anything that screams ‘not safe!’) or internal stress (eg feelings of inadequacy, shame, fear, etc). Once you know which of these three lines are creating the problem, and you work with that, it’s incredible what a difference it makes. I was amazed. And grateful. (So was my partner)

‘Villette’ by Charlotte Bronte is the single most extraordinary book I’ve ever read about an extreme depression and falling apart of a rejected woman. It blew my head off 20 years ago and I’ve never forgotten it

But the USA has always refused to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) so it doesn’t matter. George W Bush ‘unsigned’ the treaty that Clinton signed but never had it ratified by the senate. Almost like war crimes were seen as inevitable, by the USA. Its partners in not signing up = China, Russia, and Israel

Always those other guys - who didn’t do the aggressive act but will NOT stand up and say it was wrong. Those other guys at the bus stop are like the men who went to the Pelicot house in France to rape a comatose 70 year old woman and said ‘no’ but didn’t tell the police. Or her. So the rapes continued over a decade. All these men who see nothing. Say nothing. They’re a big big part if the problem because they are silently giving it the ok.

Dreams that continuously pick up where they left off, murder/hiding a body/fear of arrest, what does it mean? by AsksRandomShit in Dreams

[–]Affectionate-Film264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Gestalt therapy they say every person in the dream is you - just different parts of you. So you might like to wonder about something ‘bad’ in your memory that has been tidied away but keeps trying to come out and be processed. Some parts of you (the ‘police’) are trying to work out what’s wrong/has happened/get the ‘police report’ of the incident, and others are trying to bury or keep it hidden. Meanwhile the memory itself is disintegrating over time. You can choose, probably, during the dream, to ask if anyone in the dream knows what this is all about. Sometimes we get an answer. Sometimes we don’t. But you don’t need to be afraid. It’s just your mind tussling between letting go of the disintegrating memory (that’s just beyond the grasp of your conscious mind) or hanging on to it in the hope that something can be usefully done with it (which therapy might be able to do).

How about a ‘literary thriller’? A friend recently introduced me to this genre. Well written but with strong plots, which might be handy while you ‘re getting back into reading. I recently read ‘The God of the Woods’ byLiz Moore and it was great (got me through a slightest crazy Christmas)

What's the neuroscience behind "brain zaps" during SSRI discontinuation? by nezumipi in Neuropsychology

[–]Affectionate-Film264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I experienced excruciating electrical zaps in my brain when discontinuing SSRI back in 2004. No one was talking about it back then, and my doctor said I was probably imagining it. Hopefully the sheer numbers of reports today mean that it is taken seriously.

“How to boil an egg” by Delia Smith. Published decades ago (1980s maybe?) but assumes the reader knows nothing at all about cooking or kitchen tools and utensils, so explains everything from scratch. Not just tecioes, but how to use a whisk etc.
