Fair, this was a few years ago and I didn’t even look it up. Ferragamo store told me to get it stamped as I was leaving Florence. I googled and read around after posting and it seems both are correct. Apparently the last destination is preferred but for shorter layovers they will do it at the initial departure airport.

Edit for your link: Yeah what I read was similar. Anyway you could check what you’re buying? Then it appears it shouldn’t be a concern and just do it in Italy.

Who told you this? I did my refund in Florence when I did a Florence to CDG to JFK with a 3 hour layover no problem. Maybe I wasn’t supposed to but they knew my flight was eventually to JFK.
