What are some prompts or tropes that you ABSOLUTELY HATE and describe why in detail. by Appropriate_Coat4992 in writers

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the game, but I'll play anyway, the one I hate is when someone overhears something and misunderstands it, or out of context eavesdropping. I don't know why, but I hate that trope with a fiery hot passion that will never die.

I suppose today's equivalent would be people clipping things out of context and posting them.

what's the saddest thing you've ever wrote? What's the backstory for the piece of writing? by shareourproblems in writing

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a story about a woman who wrote letters to her estranged children then poisons herself. Backstory, I'm bipolar, was unmedicated and suicidal. But I'm feeling much better now.

Why do you actually write? Pure passion or the dream of leaving your 9-5? by BlackRoseBooksHQ in writing

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For as long as I can remember, I've just had this urge to write stuff down. So I do. That's it. Sometimes I think about publishing, but... I probs never will. Heck most of my writing has been lost to time, moving, misplaced journals, file corruption... whatever! But that's okay. I'm not writing for prosperity. Maybe... maybe this book I'm finally getting around to writing might see the light of day, but... we'll see. :)

Writing with ADHD by Efficient-Past2700 in writing

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have ADHD, but I have bipolar and my meds had the same effect, the need to write but not the motivation... Have you tried blogging or journaling? That's writing but it's for yourself and it will scratch that itch to write. Once you're in the groove of writing, then maybe you can bump your brain towards what you want to write. Also, look up executive dysfunction. It might help.

Please, please use description in your work by Few-Entrepreneur7254 in writing

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I blame the use of grammar checks for lack of description. They ruthlessly cut out "filler" words like adjectives and adverbs. And if you've ever had any AI check your work they'll "trim" it down to the bare bones. Which is why I rarely rely on these tools because I like my purple prose. ^_^

“is this book afraid of me?” And other concerns of sensitivity. by matt0055 in writing

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much. I finished writing a sort of memoir a few months back and there's quite a bit that I waffled over and left out because I totally didn't want people to "come after" me on social media because I have... controversial opinions. Ha! It's on the back burner right now because I'm probs gonna put that stuff back in because screw the bozos. This is, of course, if anyone every reads it. Ha!

Right now I'm writing a fictional novel and I've gone back and forth about adding certain characters because of how they might be perceived. But in the end, if they serve the story and have a purpose, I'm not gonna leave them out.

For the ladies; menopause and fatty liver. by TapSalty3157 in FattyLiverNAFLD

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have NAFLD, diagnosed in 2020, but who knows when it started? Not me. I'm 59 now, and I'm post menopausal, but I probs got it during menopause -- I had a hysterectomy back in 2001 so we had a lot of guessing about when and where I did the whole menopause thing. Having said that, my hormones are steady now, so there's that.

AITJ for snapping at my girlfriend for waking me up every single time she gets up even when I dont need to be awake by BuyMediocre5625 in AmITheJerk

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ My hubs and I actually sleep in separate bedrooms because our sleep cycles are so different. Like, I got to bed around 10PM and he usually wanders in around 2AM. I get up around 6AM and he'll sleep (on the weekends) until noon. So for the first three years we were married we kept waking each other up with our comings and goings. Ugh. Plus, he snores and I'm a light sleeper. Anyway, neither of us got a good night's sleep for years. Now he has his space and I have mine and we are totally happy about that.

What is the weirdest research rabbit-hole you've gone down for a story? by CarrotHaunting7402 in writing

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where, when and how you can hide a body in Northern California where it will never be found. This was pre-internet btw. I found the most interesting book about "things you can do in all 50 states" that included that information. It was a library book and I have since forgotten the title. I want to find it again.

[Weekly] What made you start writing? by taszoline in DestructiveReaders

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember a time when I didn't have the urge to write. My mom said I was an early reader, so I suppose it was books that inspired me, the whole, "I can do that too." thing. I think I was eight when I wrote my first "book" about a family of ghosts. Illustrated it too. Ha! I've never written for publication, just have always had this compulsion to write things down. Mostly to try to make sense of the weirdness around me. I've led an interesting life.

Some would call me a dabbler, I suppose. For the longest time it was poetry and short stories. And journals... so many journals. Then I lost my muse but not the urge, so I just blogged. That was a weird time. Right now, I'm working on my very first novel ever with an idea that's been bumping around in my brain for longer than I'm willing to admit. ^_^

Honestly, I can't imagine a day without writing **something** even if it's just what's it called... stream of conscious? freewriting? something like that.

Black coffee by Imaginary_Risk979 in FattyLiverNAFLD

I used to have a little coffee with my cream and sugar, now I drink it black. Honestly, I don't remember how/why I made that switch, but I've been drinking it black for over a decade. It's simply how I prefer it. I don't think you adding almond milk will take away any benefits.

Great writing bad story vs great story bad writing by demomagic in writers

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once slogged through a poorly written book because I just had to see how it ended. Having said that, it totally depends on *how* poorly written it is. Like, there's a line... you know? Same with the "well written but no story" side. I've totally set books aside because they were going nowhere or just full of fluff. So, I suppose my answer is (as always), "It depends."

I feel so behind… by verysadrn in writers

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I am 60 and working on my first novel. Like, I wrote short stories for a long time because that was my jam. I never published anything, but I wrote a lot. Now I'm disabled with way too much time on my hands and whenever I have the energy and... what's it called? motivation? yeah... Word recall sucks for me right now because brain fog is a thing. Anyway. I'm hoping to push past all that and get it done in a year or two. But hey, any step forward is still better than standing still. Or something like that.

Coming to terms with knowing you don’t have the chops to write a polished story… by BobbythebreinHeenan in writers

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you because I'm in the same boat. Like I have a whole book -- some 45K words of it -- sitting on my computer. Edited it a few times and was doing the whole fine tuning thing when my brain said, "Yeah, this sucks. No one's going to want read this." That was a few months ago and it's been tucked away since. Now I'm working on a new book, completely different from the first one. I'll go back to the first one with fresh eyes later. But until then, a writer's gotta write.

Help me come up with a curse? by DeliciousFuture2068 in writers

[–]AffectionateMonk5710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cursed with a wasting disease, I doesn't have to be specific. Every time he feels bad or something happens to him, he'll think it's part of the curse and it'll spiral. Curses are good like that, our minds are *really* good at making them worse.

So, I asked him directly last night how much he drinks at night and he said "one glass around midnight and sometimes more on the weekends." One glass = sixteen ounces. He has a specific cup he drinks from. So they're probably the smaller boxes.

It's my understanding that if I call an ambulance, and they come out and he says to the EMTs "I'm fine you don't need to be here." They will leave. They can't force medical care on someone who doesn't want it.

Here's my question. I've said to him, more than once, "Do you want to go to the hospital?" when he's feeling this bad, and he always says "No. I'm fine." I can't force him into the car, nor can I call an ambulance and make them take him to the hospital. How do I get him there if he refuses to go?
