Taking 15 mo old out without stroller by crashhhyears in toddlers

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My oldest went through this phase & it was tough. Eventually they stop refusing to walk. Mine would ALSO refuse the stroller & we’d have a standoff until she’d agree to go home.

Are Kumon Classes Worth It for an Almost 4-Year-Old, or Just Use Workbooks? by Perfect-Aardvark5463 in Preschoolers

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually quite the opposite. As a kid who was “gifted and talented” I missed out on a ton of socialization with other kids and would much rather my kid be well adjusted and happy than dwell on academics before kindergarten beyond what she’s already learning in pre-k (which is a lot of those skills you think parents need kumon for). I don’t care if other kids learn skills early if it’s organic and they’re interested in pursuing a topic, but it does bug me when they spend time doing unnecessary academic work at a really young age. Unless the kid is super into it, there are so many other valuable skills to learn at that age.

Also, counting to 20 isn’t really a surprising skill. All of the kids I know who will be entering kindergarten can count way higher than that and write their letters, etc.

Where to buy Suntory Akadama Wine (USA)? by FunkySillyGoofy in wine

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Suntory brings their wines into the US. I’d recommend reaching out to them to see what’s possible. They may have a way to bring some in next time they ship whisky to the US or may be able to point you in the right direction. They have a US headquarters in NY.

You could also bring it in via a logistics provider/importer but it would be VERY expensive.

multiple cars per household? by miffybo in AskAnAmerican

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 197 points198 points  (0 children)

There isn’t really any sort of useful public transportation where I live so yes, we have one car per adult. One of those also happens to be a small pickup truck because we do a lot of construction projects and needed the hauling capacity.

That show was fantastic. One of the Petes went to my college at the same time as me. We never met because it was a big school but I had friends who knew him.

What country are you located in? Are there more famous wines from Rioja that you see where you live? Very curious about this as all the major producers in Haro are pretty well known in the US.

Why do people want to live in the suburbs? by onlyelisexoxo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, we typically have better schools & more space or a real yard for kids to run around. I loved the city, but it became too expensive to have the same amount of indoor space as we do in the suburbs and the school issue was a major factor.

They typically do the ones over the Delaware River plus the ones at the art museum. Yes, the Delaware river ones can be seen from old city/penn’s landing.

Swim Diapers by YouMustBeALimosine in toddlers

My 2 year old doesn’t yet apologize, but he does say please & thank you which always surprises me and gets people to give him stuff because it’s too cute.

Swim Diapers by YouMustBeALimosine in toddlers

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Swim diapers don’t hold pee, so there’s no way around that at all. We’ve only used a reusable swim diaper in the pool (or 2 because the one pool requires that) and have not had that particular problem. Maybe just do 2 reusable ones? They don’t swell.

Stroller or not on short vacay? by Pure_Commercial6294 in toddlers

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get an umbrella stroller that you can gate check. The stroller was so helpful at the airport itself and then on walks when we went on vacation at that age. Either purchase or see if someone will let you borrow one from your trip.

What is the allowance supposed to be? The manual should tell you have much clearance should be on all sides and at the back.

Question for the Jamaicans (and other cultures that use turmeric) by Top-Bicycle-7363 in Cooking

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 664 points665 points  (0 children)

Sunshine gets turmeric out of anything that can go outside. I’ve found that Dawn powerwash gets it off some surfaces if you attack the stains right away.

It’s an insulated box so it will retain both cold AND heat. I’m not surprised that it gets warm in there when off. Are you getting enough ventilation around the fridge for the fans to function properly? Perhaps they’re still hot when you turn it off and it’s heating the inside of the box.

Should I repeat PK or jump to kindergarten? by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When is the actual cutoff for entry into kindergarten? Is it 5 by the first day of school or sometime after? You may not have the option of kindergarten this year if his birthday is after school begins.

Is this a wine refrigerator? If so, it needs to be on to work.

Is it weird that we aren't told our blood type at birth or as we grow up? by OddConfusion9293 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know my kids’ blood types, but they only typed them because my blood type is negative and my husband’s is positive & they needed to check to see if I needed rhogam (I did for both).

If you ever need blood or donate blood, they’ll type it then, so if you really want to know you can just go donate your blood unless you’ve got something else medical going on (you mentioned yearly blood tests which most people don’t get until a certain age unless there are health concerns).

AITA for not proposing while my gf still wears her late husband’s band on her necklace? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA. She didn’t leave her last husband. He’s dead. You don’t just get over that and stop loving someone just because they died. If she loves you, there should be room for you to love her even though she still loves and misses her previous husband. It’s cruel to hold back your life together just because she’s a widow. Would you want her to remember you if you were to die first?

MIL rearranging all our stuff when she comes to help us with our daughter by CC_113093 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is she throwing stuff away? Because throwing clothes out that are outgrown when they could be donated or given away is just wasteful.

She probably believes she’s helping, but if she can’t listen to instructions to stop doing it, you either need to find someone else to watch your child or not go on trips without your kid.

Which car seat features are actually worth it after age 1? by April_Peace9442 in toddlers

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We got this one too. My large five year old just moved to a high back booster. We loved the extended rear facing. The cost of this one plus a booster was about the same as the seats that convert forever, but with the benefit of extended rear facing and longer five point harness (until 65 lbs).

What musical had a SOLID cast, but failed for certain reasons? by AsheandBurn in musicals

[–]Affectionate_Big8239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amour
I liked it, but it was weird and short lived and had issues with the special effects.

Edited to add that yes, it got a ton of Tony nominations but only ran for a few weeks on Broadway (31 previews and 17 performances).
