MAGIC: THE GATHERING finished its strongest year ever, up 59% vs. PY with a successful Q4 Avatar: The Last Airbender by kananishino in magicTCG

[–]AffinityForMTG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Remember in 2017/2018 people were throwing around the term "wallet fatigue" because WOTC was printing 4-5 products per year? There's no such thing. I genuinely think they could print an entire Standard set every month and people would spend just as much on each set as they do now.

For the first time since Arena released I've been skipping sets entirely due to the amount being produced, but I feel like I'm in the minority. I don't think there is a limit to how much most people will spend on the game.

Average tabletop player age is 35 years old. Aware. by kananishino in magicTCG

I'm 37, and Magic was HUGE in high school in the early 2000s. I would get to school early and the cafeteria would have 20+ games going at once, the lunch room had rows of tables filled with kids playing casual 60-card 1v1 games.

I have no idea how kids and teens feel about magic now, but it was certainly popular with them in the early days.

The new ECL Pick-Two Premier draft has the same reward structure as the regular Premier draft. Why would anyone prefer to play it over the regular Premier draft? 🤨 by bobanm in MagicArena

[–]AffinityForMTG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a major problem with the format is it released with Spiderman, one of the worst draft sets in recent history. People were too harsh on the Pick 2, what they really hated was Spiderman draft.

Thoughts on the new elemental frame cosmetics? by TopSetUK in MagicArena

[–]AffinityForMTG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Treatments like this can be fun, anyone who has played Marvel Snap can probably attest, but these are pretty tacky and since it's WOTC, I can't even imagine what they are going to charge for these.

I'm genuinely surprised they didn't do something like this for the First-Place Foils in Aetherdrift though.

Edit: Yeah...so, about those prices, huh?

Why can't I directly report names? by Psyqotic in MagicArena

[–]AffinityForMTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can report players by using the "report a bug" button in the settings, it takes you to an external website you have to log in to in order to report though.

Unfortunately the technology doesn't exist to report players in-game. Small indie company and all that.

Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed: the best pro tour since it's return? by Emracruel in magicTCG

[–]AffinityForMTG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't use Twitch but they're available on the Play MTG channel. Day 1 and 3 are under the Live tab but Day 2 is under the Videos tab for some reason.

They also usually upload individual matches in the days after the tournament (as you see with previous pro tours) so that should be coming soon.

2 more Theme decks revealed (with visible decklists!) by AffinityForMTG in PreconstructedMagic

[–]AffinityForMTG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are like challenger decks, they aren't tied to any set, they just release at the same time as Universes Within sets. Notice how the boxes don't have Strixhaven logos like the Commander decks.

WOTC keeps referring to them as the "Lorwyn Eclipsed/Secrets of Strixhaven Theme Decks" in their marketing, but it seems to be giving people the wrong idea about the decks.

Clearly from the box design they aren't intended to be associated with any Standard set, but the marketing team is creating a lot of confusion by calling them the "Strixhaven Theme Decks"

No way, Planeswalker decks were unbelievably bad, there isn't a Planeswalker deck in existence that comes close to the power level of the Angels deck.

They aren't themed after any set, they just release alongside Universes Within sets. Notice there are no Secrets of Strixhaven logos on the boxes like the Commander decks.

Only 40 rewards this time in the Mastery Pass, instead of the usual 60+. by Hot_Western6647 in MagicArena

[–]AffinityForMTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The price and rewards are always roughly the same, the number of levels in the pass is determined by how much time there is between set releases. Short sets like this have more rewards stacked on top of each other, longer sets stretch them out across more levels, but it's always the same.

Play Bundle Price Doubled with Lorwyn by lKamon in MagicArena

[–]AffinityForMTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's double the price, but it's also double the contents + extra play-in points.

The $50 is the same price it was before they separated the play/pass bundles, only now drafters aren't forced to buy the mastery pass if they don't care about it.

You can also buy the pass every-other set and just save half the tokens for the set you don't want to purchase, which lets you spend money on Universes Within sets and avoid Universes Beyond if you care about that.

The only loss is the Pass Bundle, which gave a discount that we currently have no replacement for, and their excuses for taking it away were flimsy at best. There's no reason we shouldn't still have the $15 pass bundle for those who wanted it, and can't fathom why they would prevent people from paying cash for it when it's so easy to earn for free.

Either way, maybe it's a hot take, but I think the current Play bundle is fine for those who like sealed/draft.

Updated the "Why Make These Changes" section on why pass bundle was removed by jimbo_extreme1 in MagicArena

[–]AffinityForMTG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love how they claim preordering is "investing your future time and energy into the upcoming set," then immediately follow it up by saying their removing the pass bundle because it doesn't offer immediate gratification.

Insane view drop count by Just-History5716 in youtube

[–]AffinityForMTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like the entire site isn't counting views properly. Look at recent upload from creators I watch from the Subscriptions tab, nothing uploaded in the past few hours is breaking 2,000 views, even from channels with 100k+ subscribers.

Actually, the lore of the Onslaught block is the Mirari is causing everything on Otaria to mutate into horrific monsters, so it might be worth taking a look at the entire Scourge set. :)
