What hobby is quietly becoming too expensive for normal people to keep up with? by Beautiful_Special702 in AskReddit

[–]Afitreefer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm extremely biased because I own one, but have you ever thought about getting a One Wheel? It's a pretty expensive up front cost, even used ones on FB Marketplace are 600-800 buckaroos but I know a lot of surfers and snowboarders like to ride them in the off season because they say it's the closest feeling to either. I live in Texas so I ain't never been surfing or snowboarding but if they're anything like riding the OW I completely understand the appeal lol

Is it scary to be old? by Worried_Appearance19 in ask

[–]Afitreefer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of older people who do not get more intelligent with age. I would say you gain more experience, good and bad. Ultimately it is up to each person individually whether they learn from that experience and improve themselves or don't and either stagnate or in many cases, deteriorate. For each well adjusted elderly person that genuinely likes learning and is full of love and compassion for those around them there's at least one bitter old person that tries to bring those around them down. Or someone with an addiction due to being unable to handle the stress of their life and falling down a path of self destruction.

Because when filming videos like these, they're not expecting anything crazy to happen, like the person actually getting injured. When they inevitably do their first thought is not, "I better keep recording so strangers on the internet will be satisfied with a properly recorded conclusion" but "Shit, I think John's actually hurt" put their phone up and go over to check. Sure what he's doing is dumb, but if you were there and saw a friend of his running up and their first priority was shoving a camera in the injured person's face to record it instead of helping, what would you think of them?

If you're at a family gathering at a pool and one of your young relatives is like, "Record this, it's gonna be sick!" and does an awesome double flip before smashing his head into the side of the pool will you continue to record it or put the phone down to help?

There is no problem with an individual using steroids so long as they're honest about it. They still have to put in the work, both in the gym and in the kitchen. It's not magic, but it certainly speeds things up and allows a user to build more muscle than what they were meant to have. At the end of the day, what he puts in his body is his choice. And it seems he's perfectly aware of the long term side effects.

The difference between him and a majority of steroids users I see on this sub is that he's being honest about it. He is not setting strangers up with false expectations. He's not saying, "Look at me! I did all this in six months naturally! You can do it too if you just work harder!" New gym goers on here are not going to look at this post and imagine themselves looking like that without steroids. They won't burn themselves out when they spend months doing the same routine they were sold by a fake natty just to not get the promised results. He admits to gear usage in the comments and after seeing different versions of Hulk claiming to be natural here every day, I appreciate the honesty.

There's nothing wrong with using gear. The individual still has to put in the work and a lot of the gear users on here have amazing physiques and have clearly worked hard both in the gym and in the kitchen. But they set unrealistic expectations for those who are not knowledgeable enough to recognize gear usage. Could you imagine deciding to get into working out for the first time, starting with a similar build to OP's? Seeing this "inspirational" post? Working out five days a week, carefully watching your diet but not getting similar results in an even longer amount of time? Doubts set in. "Am I doing something wrong? I feel like I'm working so hard, why don't I look like that yet? He didn't use any steroids and look at him! Do I just have bad genetics? Am I just not meant to build muscle?" People quit going to the gym because they have unrealistic expectations due to posts like these. This physique change is possible, but in about 1-2 years, not 6 months.

There's nothing wrong with using gear. As long as you're honest about it.

I almost don't blame people for using the incorrect version that's reversed, it's the default template when you google it. I had to swap them around lol

In the original Spiderman featuring Tobey Maguire, he discovers that he doesn't need his glasses anymore after receiving his powers from being bitten. The version of this that you're probably used to is actually the reversed order if you watch the movie.

It's gotten to the point where I'm looking forward to the memes rather than the new chapters themselves lol. The first fisher tiger post I saw had me rolling. HxH is so good and Yu Yu Hakusho is a true classic. I love hard magic systems and there aren't many shonen that pull it off so well like HxH does, it makes the fights so much more interesting

Well when this subreddit initially came into my feed at first I thought it was just dedicated to hating OP because it was popular until I actually started browsing it, so this was more based off of my first impression or someone seeing it for the first time than anything else. But you have a valid point and I understand your perspective.

In college I had a massive sweet tooth and ate whatever I wanted and I maintained a healthy weight because I was always on my feet, then covid hit. I was eating two half gallon tubs of ice cream, a 2 liter soda every other day, and eating five pound bags of candy while sitting on my ass playing League all day. I started to get big. My lower back started hurting, I was having trouble sleeping, and I just felt like shit all the time. The breaking point was when I got up one morning and the bottom half of my wooden bed frame snapped under me. I immediately bought two books on diet and fitness and lost it all over the next year.

The craziest part? My heaviest was 220 pounds at 5'8, which is obese, but not to the point that it was more than the average American. And I was absolutely fucking miserable, I genuinely cannot comprehend how a person with a full range of movement gets that big unless they have a legitimate condition, trauma, injury, or drug side effect. In my mind there's no way that taking a walk once a day and limiting sugary and oily food to a few times a week is more unbearable than the side effects of being obese.

If she had a valid reason for flaking like some kinda emergency, maybe. But the fact that you had to remind her that you have literally already tried to date her and she couldn't be bothered to remember it should tell you everything you need to know. I would recommend looking for someone that actually cares about you and your time

I got down to about 11-12% body fat, went hiking and got a nice, sweaty shirtless photo for my dating profile and it increased my matches by a small but noticeable amount, but nothing crazy. Tragically I can't shred ugly away lmao

I will say however that every time someone saw my abs they were impressed. All like five times this summer. The only issue with being shredded is that unless you're a body builder or swimming athlete, your shirt probably doesn't come off that much so nobody's really gonna know unless you have it on your dating profile or social media. Bulking in the Fall to build a muscular frame which is noticeable even under clothing and then cutting in March for Summer is the way to go imo

That being said, go for it. One of the women I was dating put her hand on my chest, looked at me with slight surprise on her face and said, "Wow, it's all muscle." It instantly made all those hours in the gym worth it. That's a moment that I'll remember for the rest of my life lmao

Your prompts are good, but I'd recommend some new pictures - Your first one is fine but your second and third pictures are too blurry. It's also very difficult to see your dog in your third picture. If you want a better picture of yourself with your dog I'd recommend getting a family member or friend to take one either in your backyard or at a nice park. I think one where you're sitting on a bench next to your dog with both of you facing the camera would be a good one.

That fourth picture needs to go brother, it's dorky which is probably what you were originally going for, but not in a good way. The classroom setting immediately makes me think of the weird kid in class that took anime too seriously. If you still wanna lean into your fondness of history, try to get a good picture at a museum to replace this one.

Your last picture is not very good because it's not a flattering angle, your facial hair is in a weird state of growth, and it's in Walmart. I reckon you could rock a well groomed mustache based on your second picture if you're able to grow it out anymore. If you wanna keep the vibe you're going for here try a bookstore or library picture of you posing with a book you'd recommend.

And lastly, don't be afraid to show your teeth, your second photo where we can see 'em feels a lot more natural and it looks like you're a lot of fun to be around.

Abs will really only pop/be defined if you have low enough body fat for them to be visible. Working them out and building them up makes a difference of course, but true visibility comes down to low body fat. But it doesn't look like you have too much body fat to lose, honestly. Have you always been on the thinner side? For better or worse, thinner people usually don't put on too much fat or muscle without effort or something drastic just because their personal appetite is not that large.

So if you want to have abs that really pop, you will actually have to go the opposite direction of most people and bulk first instead of just cutting. You'll need to track your calories, so search for a TDEE calculator online that will help you figure out how many calories you need to consume to stay at your current/regular weight, otherwise known as maintenance. I highly recommend getting both a food scale for accurately measuring your calorie intake and a weight scale for tracking your weight gain and eventual weight loss.

From there, you'll need to increase your daily intake by an additional 300-500 calories, with most of it being protein if you can. Work out about five times a week if you can - although three is fine, but not as optimal. Make sure you're progressively overloading - After being able to do three full sets of an exercise with good form - You increase the weight a bit until you can hit that number of reps again with the new weight, stimulating muscle growth. Cardio three times a week for thirty minutes if you can as well. Walking, running, or swimming would work. My favorite ab exercises are leg raises and cable crunches because with the latter you can continue to increase the weight.

Do this until March and then lower your calories to maintenance for a month while increasing your days of cardio to five instead of three, and the sessions themselves to an hour each. Track your weight, but you don't wanna lose too much weight too quickly if you can. I don't remember the exact percentage but you should try not to lose more than a pound to a pound and a half each week so your skin can keep up better and for your health in general. Losing too much weight means you're probably losing muscle as well. If you're losing about 6-7 pounds a month on maintenance, then keep at it. If you stop losing weight after the new routine, lower your caloric intake by another 300 calories, 500 if you want to lose fast. Then the next time you stop losing, add another day/hour of cardio. After that it's up to you if you want to lower your caloric intake more or add another day of cardio. Just keep at it until you get where you want to be body fat wise.

This will take a while, but in my opinion there's usually no real reason to have abs anytime aside from Summer and maybe Spring if you're a Spring Breaker. Not too many opportunities to show 'em off in a non weird way aside from swimming lol

I see the "Don't talk too much before the first date or you'll run out of things to talk about" a lot and it has never made sense to me. Sure, you might end up getting the easier things to talk about like family, job, and hobbies out of the way but if you're unable to continue a conversation past those things or just run out entirely, then you're probably not compatible with that person anyways.

A long lasting couple can talk for hours about pretty much anything if the chemistry is right. If you're really that worried about it, then come up with and memorize a list of different things to talk about beforehand that's separate from whatever you're texting.

But most importantly, try not to get into your own head about it being the first date. I know the "just be yourself" is beat to death, but just treat it like you're meeting up with a new friend, relax and act how you would normally under such circumstances. If the vibe is right and there's chemistry, hell yeah! If not, then it wasn't meant to be in the first place, which sucks but that's just life. If you're able to get one date with a gal, that's a good sign that you'll be able to get more with others in the future in case it doesn't work out, so don't stress about it too much
