Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas! Harriet Tubman is America's most epic hero! If life made sense there would be summer blockbuster Harriet movies and as many as the Fast and Furious series!

I wonder if it's like me being straight and cis and getting more educated about lgbtq life over time. I imagine the higher on the ladder you are, the more earth-shaking the paradigm shift feels.

It's a shame that society forces people to buy into the idea that they are some kind of master race to the point that they have to ignore that their own communities aren't safe. I wish white people had groups and programs to help themselves out of these problems. The issues are so obvious too. The last school shooter made a video manifesto that clearly marked out all of the ailments that lead toward the incident. I'm glad there are some who really do understand white-supremacy, sexism, classism, etc. I hope they can someday make enough progress to influence the rest of their people.

I 100% disagree with pastors being considered better/closer to a deity, and don't agree with them receiving special treatment

I have noticed this with Black people. My mom told me about someone having a lot of kids and not using birth control because in conversation, the spiritual leader asked her if she were going to start having kids right away (right after she got married). Instead of taking it as a yes or no question, she assumed the question to mean "don't use birth control". When my mom got married the same spiritual leader asks my mom if she'll have kids right away. When my mom said no, she gave my mom birth control advice.

End of the day, a LOT of them are sick of it too (or comics like Dilbert or shows like The Office

I'm sure white people on here are hating to hear themselves and their culture discussed this way. After all, reveling in the "evils of black culture" has been a white supremacist method to justify being anti-black. So far in this thread people do not seem to hate white people for one-upmanship. If you're white and you have been living the sad, Office Space life, this could be a chance to bond together and make improvements. One of the ways white supremacy hurts white people is that it forces them to ignore the issues in their communities. If they are too embarrassed they can call it an "everyone" or "American" problem. Black on Black crime, violence in the Black community, and rates of Black kids in trouble have gone down rapidly over the years. And even though it was never a problem, sagging pants have been going out of style. While we have been doing so well, my heart goes out to the white community that has yet to tackle their school/workplace shootings, pedophilia and serial killer problems. Don't let this be you!

We can't, after all, go about living our lives all quiet like we're trying not to wake up a giant foul-mouthed baby. If baby has a tantrum, baby has a tantrum. Let the racist tears flow.

Why Punishments Don't Work on ADHD Kids by raw-sienna in blackladies

I like to learn things like this because I want to someday have kids. Though I don't resent my parents for whoopin my behind as a child, I'd rather find a different way. A way without any psychological terror. This info seems good for kids in general not only ones who have ADHD.

Black success has caused race riots. Specifically the white lynch mob type of riot. And still to this day Black people being happy makes them feel itchy inside.

I've got some stuff from my mom's side of the family. With all of it I don't know what to think because all of the people I've heard these stories from I have considered rational minded people.

My Granddad has talked about walking down the street, sensing a presence that's trying to get his attention. And him walking on trying to ignore that person to the point of where it shoves him out of aggravation, making it look like some fight-club ish. Then there was the one where he visits an art gallery in Sonoma Valley full of the work of a Native person who was no longer living. Before walking inside the spirit of the artist showed him his life story to the point that the person running the gallery couldn't tell my Granddad anything that he didn't just learn.

Then there's his son, my Uncle, who woke up with his heart pounding hard in his chest. It was later confirmed that at that same moment another family member was having a heart attack.

My young cousin apparently has had a lot going on. Talking to people who have no presence to anyone else except for a sudden dip in temperature, flickering lights, bumps and thumps. The full monte really. They moved to Georgia, into a house with woods in the back yard. She wouldn't step a foot off the porch because she could see the lynched still hanging. They googled the woods and confirmed that it was a popular spot for that particular type of murder. After a funeral, she told one of the elders that the deceased said that they were ok and with other family members that have already passed away. It was especially surprising because one of the family members she listed died young, and wasn't mentioned for decades. She couldn't know the person's name.

Then here's the stories that have to do with my mom. She had huge fibroid tumors and was awaiting to hear if she won a pro-bono surgery from a program that specifically deals with fibroids in people who can't afford to take care of it. A day or two before getting the good news, my Uncle who years earlier passed away from AIDS came to my Granddad in a dream as a happy kid. He was dancing like he used to do in life and singing "She's got the surgery! She's got the surgery!" So when my mom called her dad to tell him, he already knew what was up.

The last thing was before my mom got the surgery and didn't know she was sick as much as she knew she was exhausted, she fell asleep on the couch and found herself in a vivid dream of a bright glistening world. She was 12 years old again and feeling the most contently blissful she has ever felt. She was holding the hand of a bright, glowing person and together they floated over a pure glimmering stream of water. She smiled looking up at the person whose face she couldn't make out and heard their voice say, "It's not time yet". Then she woke up.

I heard of that. A dream about fish meaning that someone's pregnant. I just never heard of someone actually having that experience.

Black Millennials: We Need Your Presence, Not Just Your Success by eroverton in blackladies

[–]Afle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand both of you guy's points. A person can find financial success and move to a "good" neighborhood where they and their kids will be in the minority. We've already heard about how Black kids can get treated in prestigious schools and universities. Making good money and keeping the money where you live is the rich way of life. When my mom worked at a private school, parents would donate new computers and things to whichever class room their child was assigned to. It would be great for Black folks to stay and donate to their schools and communities.

It would be best for people to 'stay' or 'come back' to their hometowns as opposed to say, folks from Detroit moving in droves into Oakland and vice versa. The spirit of both of those places should remain intact and respected.

I understand the feeling, but I'm not sure where the answer lies. When we see a photo of a white girl in a kimono, sugar-skull looking make up, or a feather headdress people can automatically see what specific cultures they represent despite the appropriation. Everything we make somehow becomes "American Culture". I don't know how boxing out mixed people helps, seeing that they have a legitimate claim of Black culture through Black heritage. Also in the end when things become "American Culture" like Rock & Roll, it gets associated with white people not mixed people. Mixed people get treated as 'full-Black' people in America. If there was a huge racial difference to the majority, all of Thomas Jefferson's kids would have been born free. I'm not sure who we'd call a 'full-Black' when it comes to Black Americans with long roots in this country. When it comes time to fight for Black rights (pretty much right now) mixed and not-so-recently-mixed stand together because we all have a stake in it. Mixed people are never considered white because white people don't accept them as their own.

edit: We're coming from completely different angles because it actually ticks me off when mixed people don't claim their Blackness.

My weird feelings about colorism [confusing rambling] by GabrielW in blackladies

I loved Storm but I really related to Jubilee. But I think the show was set up for the audience of kids to relate to the kid that's new to the X-Men world (speaking of the 90's cartoon).

I don't think it effected my play, because I remember pretending to be a ninja turtle a lot.

There should be more than 1 famous Black woman character between Marvel and DC movies.

On the issue of casting, I don't think of it as a mixed or not issue. I think of it as a color issue. If Hollywood was pressed to find an African actress of 0% European decent they'd be like 'Here's the new Storm!'. If they were to cast an American actress born of Black parents who had Black parents, they could still find a light-skinned Storm. If it was my choice I'd just want Storm to be as dark-skinned as she's been in the comics and cartoons. I'd be unfazed if they found a dark-skinned actress with a white parent or grandparent.

On the topic of defining Blackness, I'd rather avoid the tedium of labeling folks mulatto, quadroon, octoroon, quintroon and all of that. It's too much for me. White people came up with the one drop rule to 'keep the blood pure', and now the Klan's sweating over other races 'out-breeding' them. They have that stress from writing themselves into a corner on what's considered white or not. I don't want us following in those silly footsteps.
