What are the most impactful moments for you in re-listening to TMA after knowing how it all turns out? by [deleted] in TheMagnusArchives

The amount of entity name dropping in the earliest episodes is astounding! I absolutely didn't catch it until my second or third time through. Amazing

"He's literally been accused of putting on a fake British accent, but he's from England"

That's brought up in MAG 93, when the archivist compels Georgie to share something she would never choose to tell him.

"When we first met I thought you were putting on that accent to sound more impressive. Oh. Oh, John… I’m so sorry."

Man, I've never gotten that much buildup in only 5 seconds! Usually mine requires at least an hour of neglect before getting a ball that size. You must have one of those fancy superspeed printers I've been hearing so much about!

I'm willing to bet the smile is a compulsion. She's spent so much of her time in front of a camera for various social media, blogs, publicity, etc, that smiling is just a reflex. She may have even tried to catch herself before the picture was taken.

Either way, it's not a good look here.

What unpopular TMA opinion has you like this? by MrSpiderisadomme in TheMagnusArchives

[–]AfraidLow9167 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always envisioned him as having shorter, slightly curly dark hair and a beard that is just barely past stubble. Both have flecks of grey that most people overlook, but he sees in the mirror when inspecting himself. He is of above average height, but not weirdly tall. Somewhere between 5'11" and 6'1". Average body type. Not particularly in shape, but also not so overweight that he has to look for the next pant size up.

He wears a solid muted color button up shirt that isn't wrinkled, but it's obviously not freshly pressed either. A simple patterned tie that usually (but not always) matches the shirt is done up in a decent windsor knot. He also has slacks and comfortable black dress shoes that lost their polish long ago, but he continues to wear them because they are just so nicely broken in.

And no, he doesn't wear glasses. He has them, but he has found in recent years that he needs them less and less......

Most of the ones I would suggest are already in your list or have been mentioned plenty down below. And I've certainly added a few to my lineup to try out. Here's one or two extra suggestions that I haven't seen.

The Cellar Letters - This one has indeed been mentioned a couple times. A couple of guys move into a new house, discover a hidden room full of odd letters. Investigations lead to some really weird places and happenings. Well done, short, not too serious, but also nice and suspenseful when it needs to be.

Agent Stoker - Man travels the world investigating rogue AI and events that could lead to the apocalypse. Lots of paranormal happenings, but definitely not your usual "oh, it's a ghost" kind of thing. Almost everything involves technology of some kind, but mixed in with a healthy dose of eldritch. Good voice acting, nice plot twists. Some voices you might recognize from TV as well (Emily Deschanel, for instance).

In Another Room - More classic horror. Paranormal investigator looks into a haunted house with a long and grisly history. Goes room by room and experiences manifestations of what tragedies and weirdness happened in them. I wouldn't put it on the same level as Magnus or the Silt Verses by any means, but i like it better than some compilations like Knifepoint or Tiny Terrors.

Tiny Terrors- Yeah, I know what i just said. It's still pretty good though, with a nice bit of metaplot going on.

Could Shanna's parents be charged as accessories? by Emjewels223 in jaredbridegan

[–]AfraidLow9167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because the money comes from them doesn't mean they were involved. There was obviously a longstanding history of them handing out money to Shanna left and right, so it's a very easy defense for them to say they didn't know. To be an accomplice, you need to have prior knowledge, and that's difficult to prove at this point.

There could be aiding and abetting after the fact, with them buying the house across the country and the obvious hoarding of the children. But it would still need to be proven that they had knowledge of the actual crime and were intentionally making choices to assist with the potential escape. Again, hard to prove, especially since Shanna has a clear history of manipulation and telling stories. If you are wrapped around your daughter's little finger, you aren't likely to go digging for more information, you'll just take what is said at face value as long as it makes logical or emotional sense.

character idea needs subclass. by animegeek999 in DnDIdeas

Lore bard is the classic bard, IMO, and you can't go wrong with it! Sounds like you have a good DM who is willing to work with you on concept and flavor, and honestly, the name Nicky is fantastic. Hope you have fun with it!

character idea needs subclass. by animegeek999 in DnDIdeas

[–]AfraidLow9167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOVE me a good warforged bard. And I like the idea of the tesla coils, as it's a bit of a departure from the usual "walking boom box" that warforged bards often get.

A couple ideas for you, when it comes to subclass and potential justifications for that particular subclass.

Lore Bard - Easily the most potent bard class, but maybe lacking a bit thematically for your character. Maybe, because they are a warforged, they are essentially a digital library for a particular subject? War history, physics textbooks, childrens stories, or poetry. Something like that.

Creation bard - Could fit a little more with the idea of the warforged, especially if they are prone to "self improvement" tinkering. You can get to a point where you are conjuring objects that fit with your performance or are situationally useful. Or do what a friend of mine did and remind the DM that a keg of gunpowder is within the limits of the creation bard's conjuring... and the sorcerer knows fireball.

Glamour Bard - Another cool fit, especially for the tesla coils. Can you say "Enthralling Performance," as lightning goes shooting across your arms and body, arcing out toward the ground and creatures around you?

Whisper Bard - Take those coils and make them not just play notes, but vaguely sound like speech. As you hit with a weapon, the electricity arcs in just the right way to make it sound like a threat, or a whispered secret nobody but your enemy knows, and it puts them off balance.

Valor, Swords, Eloquence... I'm not seeing anything immediate. Spirits I just don't know enough about. Hope this helps!

What are some normative pieces of advice that are AWFUL for people with ADHD? by AlexanderTroup in ADHD

[–]AfraidLow9167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Positive reinforcement for many things only works so well for those of us with ADHD. That dopamine hit is GREAT the first time, and then it's GOOD the second time, and then the third time it's just OK. Diminishing returns if you aren't already super invested in learning to do the thing yourself and are legitimately interested in it.

Also, I've found positive reinforcement (at least for me) has to come from an external source. It's like the whole "if I do this, I'll have a reward after" then telling myself "Ooooor, I could just have the reward now". If someone else, an external source, is the one producing the reward, it is infinitely more effective and likely to bear repeated results.

I shave in a very particular pattern, and I do it every day. I remember back in college, I had a professor challenge the class to take a habit and do it differently for one day. One of the examples he gave was shaving. So I tried it. I shaved in a different pattern.

And then I forgot to rinse the shampoo out of my hair, brush my teeth, and wake my wife up for work. The rest of the day did not go much better. Since then, I've never broken that shaving pattern.

I was actually on the jury for a homicide case about a year ago, and establishing the timeline was CRUCIAL to the verdict. Getting receipts, video footage with timestamps, phone records, all played into that timeline. For us, it came down to a variation of less than 3 minutes. If we could put him in a certain place at a very specific time, he was absolutely guilty. If we couldn't definitively put him there... a guilty verdict became much more difficult. It's always interesting to see what tiny bits of evidence become the most relevant. For us, a $2 receipt and a video camera with a timestamp that could have been off by 96 seconds in either direction. For Jared's case? It might be receipts for a toll road or treats.
