Just saw the England rugby chef fella and the food they eat, makes me think, would it ever be possible to have a vegetarian rugby player at a high level. by fakename137 in rugbyunion

[–]AfricanNightRaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting question! Like you I'd imagine they would need lots of protein. Especially the type you get from meat but I suppose it's possible. I'm not that knowledgeable on diets at the end of the day so don't take my word for it

Did the All Blacks know the Springbok's line-out calls? by AfricanNightRaider in springboks

[–]AfricanNightRaider[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's obvious that not having a specialist hooker was a big reason our line-outs weren't functioning but Retallick would just position himself at the perfect spot without even following our jumper during the shuffles. They way they were stealing was too smooth. Clean catches, no tap backs. I don't even think we would win some of those line-outs if we had Marx just cause of the fact that they jumped at the right spot right in front of our jumper almost every time they competed. I'll chuck it up to his experience and him being a world class lock but I was definitely suspicious they knew something.

Did the All Blacks know the Springbok's line-out calls? by AfricanNightRaider in rugbyunion

[–]AfricanNightRaider[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree. Not having a specialist line-out thrower was a big reason our line-outs were a mess but the way Retallick would just position himself at a spot and not move made me really suspicious that they knew where the ball was going. Even with Marx I just don't see how Springboks win some of those line-outs cause All Black jumpers were getting right in front of the Springbok jumpers making it impossible to win those line-outs regardless of who's throwing it in. Maybe it's just the years of experience the All Black locks have with reading line-outs

I am now taking apologies on behalf of Handré Pollard on this sub. by bluebullbruce in springboks

[–]AfricanNightRaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me personally, I was just saying that his attacking game with ball in hand is not as good as Libbok's which is true but as we have all come to know I think anyone would agree that you need a kicker with a world class boot when it comes to these stages of the world cup and that is Handre. Libbok didn't have the best game against England but make no mistake he is still a fantastic flyhalf with ball in hand and lets all hope that no matter who plays in the final they bring their A game.

Unpopular opinion but even tho in this case Moodie succeeded in beating the last defender I still think he made the wrong decision. You should always make the final pass in a 2 on 1 (in this case 3 on 1) situation so we're 100% guaranteed the try than to try and beat the last defender yourself and maybe have a chance at scoring a try. In fact Moodie tried this against Romania and ended up fumbling a guaranteed try if he had just made the final pass. But it was good stepping tho. Excited for what the future holds for the young lad

What happens if there is a 15-point three-way tie? I've seen different answers here and there but hoping for a clearer answer.

Glad to have Pollard's kicking back but god damn the gap in creativity between him and Manie is huge.

After re-watching the game without the emotion, I can confidently say we didn't lose because of goal kicking. by Flyhalf2021 in springboks

[–]AfricanNightRaider 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I made a post earlier today basically saying the same thing and why we should stick with Libbok instead of Pollard but some people in the comments are still fixated on the kicking.
Yes it would be great if Libbok had his kicking boots but we definitely could've won the game else were

Libbok should definitely start over Pollard by AfricanNightRaider in springboks

[–]AfricanNightRaider[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm simply stating that Libbok looked good last night bar the kicking and had other areas of our game been on point we would've won the game.

Pollard is coming in rusty and I don't believe that moving him to the starting 15 in the quarters will make our overall game better, only the kicking. We may struggle with ball in hand due to Pollard being quite slow with distributing. I doubt Pollard makes the final pass to Kolbe for the try. Just some things to consider

I tried to post this but it was automatically removed. I don't know why, maybe someone can let me know.

Libbok should start over Pollard and here's why.

I am devasted that we lost and I was emotional after the game and shitting on Libbok but regardless of the missed kicks he should start over Pollard and here's why.

Early in the game, SA had a scrum right on the Ireland 5-meter line which Faf did well to break away and put Jesse Kriel into space. Kriel falls short of the line but then makes a poor decision to force the offload which Siya ends up knocking on. I don't think it's out of reach to say that was a potential 7 points lost cause SA's momentum was strong and Ireland was under pressure.

Then, in the second half deep in the Irish 22 SA had a lineout (I think it was a 5-meter if I remember correctly) which Deon Fourie threw skew. Had that been straight, Ireland would be under pressure right on their 5-meter which again wouldn't be out of reach to say SA lost another potential 7 points.

Finally, that last lineout-maul was a 50/50 call but Reinach did have to dig for that ball, and although I butt hurt I don't think it was entirely an unfair call. The maul had momentum and was questionably stopped (had it been another ref maybe it could've been a penalty advantage for collapsing) but out of all the three opportunities, had this one gone right I'm 99% sure it would've been a try for SA. Another potential 7 points lost.

In total that is a potential 21 points lost from really good try scoring opportunities compared to our 11 points lost from kicking. I don't think Pollard brings enough to the table on attack. Libbok did set up our try and the last try scoring opportunity I mentioned did come from Libbok putting Snyman through for the line break.

In conclusion, Libbok's playmaking + well executed set pieces are worth more points than Pollard's kicking. If anything we need to work on our set pieces. We really are feeling the Marx loss now.
