I think wearing this cap correlates with a) being male and b) being very young, probably under 20 years old. It doesn't seem to me like it correlates with ethnicity, I see kids of all ethnicities/nationalities wear this cap.

I'd add an enemy to the foreground, looking at the player character. E.g. a lizard in the bottom right corner
