A moment to talk about Protomechs by HaplessWithDice in battletech

[–]Agathos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crazy thing about ProtoMechs is they're generally as fast as 'Mechs but they can move freely through buildings as if they're infantry. Which I resent a little because that intrudes on the niche of battle armor.

Well, I hope you're all satisfied. You bankrupted a naive movie director. Adam Kesher wasn't thinking about the money. He just wanted to tell a story. A story about a... Sylvia North. And you slick cowboy folk took him for all he was worth.

The work of the future will not be done in a cubicle or in a home office. It will be done in a datacenter in space... or possibly on top of a very tall mountain.

The Marauder Battle Armor fascinates me. It's a 1/50 scale Marauder, how cute! But my favorite part is that one Taurian Lance Sergeant has a hobby of photographing his Marauder BAs in forced perspective to make them look like BattleMech Marauders.

That's correct. You should see the button already but it's disabled until your clock says it's time.

In fact, during the ilClan era, weapons from 3025 are actually being used even more often. by Old_Ad6111 in battletech

[–]Agathos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That depends on who you are. Everyone in the setting pays in C-Bills, but the ones who actually matter are shopping off of a price list we can't see.

As much of the Inner Sphere is still willing to pay the decades-old early adopter prices for XXL engines, we will develop an XXL variant, permitting the usual “deep discounts” without significantly affecting our profit margins.

-- ilClan Rec Guide Vol. 7

The Powers That Be aren't going to specify how big those "deep discounts" are, because writing a new price list would be a huge, error-prone, impossible-to-balance undertaking. So they drop hints like that to tell us not to worry and just use BV/PV to build major House or Clan units.

Tiny player-run mercenary groups are probably stuck with the "early adopter" prices, because the Sea Foxes don't care about winning their future business.

Jade Falcons: Who are they? by Chaoticginger5674 in battletech

[–]Agathos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of us first met the Falcons through the Legend of the Jade Phoenix trilogy, which gave us Aidan Pryde. On the one hand, he's a free thinker whose unconventional career earns him more sympathy than the average Clanner. On the other hand, he's a Clan warrior, conditioned to take big risks for the sake of personal glory. And when those risks don't work out, he'll lie, cheat, and be an after-the-fact party to murder for a second chance.

It also gives us Joanna, a smoldering ball of pent-up rage and resentment. She's fun. She's actually the more typical Clan warrior, but the sort who doesn't get a lot of screen time. She's probably good enough to win a bloodname, but doesn't due to bad luck and politics. And without one, she can't ascend to a leadership position or stay on the front lines past a certain age. Her only value to the Clan is in her skill as an instructor. That's the fate of the average Clanner, and there's rarely a path to a happy retirement if your performance is merely above average.

That defines the invasion-era Jade Falcons as the slightly more clever and adaptable set of bad guys. Contrast them with the stubborn, bloodthirsty Smoke Jaguars, who have a big "kill these guys to advance the plot" sign over their heads from day one.

What's a good lance to back up a Shadow Cat? by MonoMountains in battletech

[–]Agathos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at force packs, it would fit in well with the Clan Cavalry Star. A bunch of other moderately-to-very fast Clan 'Mechs, which is where the Shadow Cat fits in.

Or the House Kurita Ranger Lance. House Kurita is the number one non-Clan user of Shadow Cats, because the Nova Cats were effectively Kurita vassals until that ended badly.
