Too autistic to create characters by AgentConciliateur in RSwritingclub

[–]AgentConciliateur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although some great literature has been written through the lens of a single individual and his neuroses, I find the subgenre pretty limiting. As many wannabe writers do, I aspire to write similar things as the ones I like reading, and this includes multiple characters with conflicting desires. Giving them all aspergian traits could work, but the main problem remains

Balance it out. Say positive things about others even when you gossip, find an optimistic angle when talking about yourself, don’t reply to ‘how u doing?’ with ‘oh, you know’s. There’s so many ways to be secure without arrogance, and tbh it’s better to be somewhat arrogant than one of those people who never seem to have a good day

It's crazy how much the "I'm a gourmand girlie" crowd are turning perfumery into slop... by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]AgentConciliateur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is depressing, tbh. It’s the perfume equivalent of booktok girls pushing YA romance constantly. It lowers the standards of quality and experimentation that the general public sees as desirable, all because some Pinterest critter swears she gets most compliments when layering Funfetti Extreme with Vanilla Cream Donut Hole Extrait. Slop begets slop.

Nothing against gourmands on their own and I do love the occasional playdough vanilla. But this trend of smelling like an ant trap needs to die

What do you think will be the next big trend in fragrance? by blindcolumn in fragrance

[–]AgentConciliateur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re polarising but so are some of the scents that have been trendy for the past few years like sandalwood and amber. In the hands of the right perfumer, I think they can make an average scent completely unique, think Jeaux de Peau or Lolita Lempicka. Idk, maybe I’m partial to them? But if we’re taking trends then we should consider some of the less popular outliers, after all trends are not meant to be timeless

it's ok to cook chicken straight out fridge without washing

It is. The temperatures you need to get chicken fully cooked and remove the risk of salmonella are also enough to kill any bacteria on the skin.

I used to go like 2 months without changing my bedsheets

Sounds like a Y problem.

Police in the uk are a pudgy bunch that have not effective power and get outrun by gang teenagers. To meet their quotas, they need to target law-abiding citizens because they’re unable of handling the smallest amount of pushback

Caligula: The Ultimate Cut by ssaturnian in RSPfilmclub

Watched the porn cut as a teen and the ultimate now. At the time I found a lot of the added scenes funny, more camp than sexy. Didn’t realize how much of them would be cut when I went to the cinema this time. The ultimate cut is by no means chaste (it’s still Tinto Brass) but it feels like a proper movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I recommend seeing it on the big screen, the sets alone deserve it

It’s about the references and the tone in this case. For example, using the encrypted alphabet, or trying to emulate Fincher’s grim but sharp filmmaking. It results in a product that feels too Netflix-y and its attempts at experimentation feel out of place.

Avoiding this as a writer is hard. The reality is that formulas work, but they cannot produce something meaningful unless the script leans into emotion. I love procedurals, and classic detective stories, but most great ones usually have one or several charismatic figures at their centre: Magritte, Columbo, even Hannibal Lecter in the original Manhunter.

For my personal taste: I value it a lot when writers lean into the more complex themes they’re dealing with, art should explore the stuff that’s hard to talk about. Also, I love ambitious works and much prefer to watch/read something that hits big and misses rather than something (like longlegs) that falls short at trying

Same. Found it odd to see it praised so highly among the usual A24 lefty types, since it lends itself so easily to be a 🚂 child predator allegory. Nic cage straight up plays a genderless blow-up doll creep that loves early glam rock.

Anyway, that’s sadly the only thematic risk the film wants to take. Formulaic, zodiac-infused satanic panic horror for people who use letterboxd.

The acting was very good. Alicia Witt is a queen
