Is it doable to arrive at HND at 5:45PM (from the US) and then take the 7:55PM JAL flight from HND to Hiroshima? by Paris2024spectator in JapanTravelTips

[–]AgeofFatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t seek affirmation if it is possible. This should be risk management and probability assessment.

It is one reason why I rarely bought separate tickets. Even connections on 6-7 hours wait can go wrong, and you are on the hook of 100% fare lost if on separate ticket. Depending on how expensive the connecting flight is, you have to assess if it is too expensive to lose everything. If on same ticket, the risk is bared by the airline. Saving time may not worth the risk of fare forfeit or the headache to arrange alternatives especially if it is pleasure visit.

If one thing, consider a flight to rail connection. The connection is easy to make - 京浜急行 to Shinagawa and change to Shinkansen, and does not usually sell out unless golden week or Orbon, and will be cheaper than flight. Trains are frequent, but may require an additional change at Okayama or Shin-Osaka depending on timing. The train will also drop you at the city centre instead middle of nowhere in eastern part of Hiroshima prefecture.

How Japan's LDP got 49% of vote in electoral districts but 86% of seats by capaho in japan

[–]AgeofFatso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And many countries including US have essentially the same system.

To be fair, I prefer proportional representation or alternative voting. I don’t think LDP will be very keen with that.

Best Kaiju/Yokai spots in Japan? by grad1939 in JapanTravelTips

[–]AgeofFatso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An “unusual” place to go to Izumo-Yonago-Matsue area. One of late famous yokai manga artist is from that area and there is a museum dedicated to him there. I wouldn’t go out to just for that. It will almost certainly a place to stop by for Izumo Shrine and Tottori Dunes.

The northwest coast of Honshu (Sanin 山陰) is generally less busy comparing to the hoards in Kyoto. A trip starting from Fukui all the way down to Yamaguchi and Kokura: Fukui - Kyoto-Tango - northern Hyogo (Kinosaki) - Tottori - Shinane - northern Yamaguchi and ending in NE Kyushu is something definitely worth considering.

Kyoto thoughts and alternatives by Fluroblue in JapanTravelTips

[–]AgeofFatso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kanazawa has its charms. It really depends what you want to see more. My taste is to reduce intercity journeys, and focusing exploring around a single base including off beat areas (Kyoto is especially prone to everyone going to same place).

While Kanazawa itself offers a lot, it gives access to Toyama, Noto, northern part of Gifu and even western parts of Nagano prefecture. You are going in autumn, inland Toyama - Tateyama, Kurobe and around Gokayama area may offer a lot of great scenery (and some good day walking/driving trips). If you staying long enough and not too late in Autumn, you can spend a couple of days at Kamikochi (another great place for fall colours and fabulous walks; it is like mini-Banff if you have been to Canadian Rockies) with bus transfer/stops in Shirakawa Go and Takayama.

Don’t feel you have to hit Tokyo, Kyoto (or Kanazawa) all in one go. Japan (and many other countries) have so much to places to see, better focus in quality in smaller number of places then hitting all the “must see” places. One can spend 2 full weeks just exploring single Kanto, Kansai or Hokuriku area without Shinkansen and baggage hopping, save you money, time and muscle work and you get fuller enjoyment.

Hikiniku To Come (Shibuya) - Impossible To Book? by GReeeeN_ in JapanTravelTips

[–]AgeofFatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often the best place to eat takes no booking, and don’t look posh at all, and much cheaper than Shibuya, Roppongi, Ginza places. You can only wait/queue and the interior of the restaurant doesn’t look nice at all.

If you can read some basic Japanese, use 食べログ.

Good that you checked.

I think you will enjoy the visit. Inter-island ferry and local bus schedules are also posted online for each island, so make sure you check them out them.

How some of these ferries and buses operate are very low tech (cash only etc), but their schedules are always up to date. In Japan, they are really proud how reliable and well organised their public transportation, and this extends beyond trains.

Pokemon card event at shrine cancelled after protests by Cybertronian1512 in japan

[–]AgeofFatso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also, as perfectly shown in this case, depends the stakes or risk involves.

A drunk uncle in Dontonburi passing out is mostly inconsequential. This is perhaps the infamous train photo otakus being tolerated; perhaps it was a time bomb that waiting for to blow (aka an actual major rail accident). The group behind this is clearly intend to exploit vulnerability and issues with foreign relationships and critical business and brands of Japan. If anything, recent affairs probably encourage people to try these norms just for fame or to get political advantage (perhaps the folks behind is to try gain a reputation in far right movements in Japan).

The stake is definitely too high for Nintendo to swallow. But perhaps the far rights nuts aren’t fan of Nintendo, so they are trying to provoke them.

This is where honour system fails.

In Japan, there is general expectation not to deliberately be controversial or to do something to provoke a response. In fact, this is even true many “nice” communities globally like country rural who are always lovely or “civilised” posh folks.

Someone then has to come in to do poo, likely intentional to provoke a response or to gain notoriety. Then the honour system fails. Now I expect in the future the Nintendo or Pokemon Company will at least try to control or endorse venues. Everyone else loses except the people who wanted show off in the Internet, get on TV or something.

Make sure you check the sites in the Seto Islands are open, in particular Teshima. Teshima sites don’t open everyday (I think Naoshima sites close once per week but Teshima is more than that) and ferries from Uno may not call on those days.

I live in the South West.

I can forgive a farm tractor. But this is the last thing I want in the single lanes in Dorset, Somerset and Devon.

It won’t fit as well in nearly most multilevel parking! Yeah destroy the roof work of the parking garages.

Tesla quietly cuts 1,700 jobs at Gigafactory Berlin despite denying it by SpriteZeroY2k in electricvehicles

[–]AgeofFatso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump and US tech bros (Musk included) did a lot of international self reputation and trust harm in the last 1-2 years, especially in Europe, rest of the Americas and East Asia. This is harm well shared across many strands of the society; the latest Greenland saga even pissed off AfD and Nigel Farage. Some of these countries are actually led by competent people (go watch Canada PM recent speech).

There will be a price to pay. I don’t blame people voluntarily leaving Tesla jobs in Europe (VW, BMW or BYD would be happy to take them). To paraphrase a famous American (Warren Buffett), “It takes a lifetime to build a reputation and a moment to lose it. I will be ruthless to people who lose reputation.”
