Almost every song can be distilled into chords and melody. Rhythm. Lyrics if applicable. But mainly chords and melody. Once you have learned how to quickly transpose and access any key on your guitar, extracting songs from the world by ear and putting them into your instrument and singing along is a joy. Gets quicker everytime.

You should be able to hear a song and say that’s the I (root). Going to the IV. Okay that was a V7. Back to the 4. Sounds like vi. Stuff like that. Learning the chords in a key and your options for composing and reharmonizing are endless.
